Pink Tutu Milan: Post 678 - Ciao Bella, Milano!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Buongiorno, my darling ballet bunnies! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad travel blogger, Emma, checking in from the fashion capital of the world – Milan, Italia!

The city is alive with energy, buzzing with stylish people whizzing past on Vespas, and the air is thick with the delicious aroma of espresso and freshly baked pastries. It's a ballet lover's dream, a swirling kaleidoscope of colours, textures, and of course, that Italian flair for the dramatic.

Now, before I delve into the delightful details of my Milan adventures, let me tell you how I got here. Remember how I mentioned funding my travels through ballet performances? Well, last week, I twirled my way through a charity gala at the Derby Theatre, which led to a generous donation that propelled me to Italy. Talk about being en pointe with my dreams!

My journey began in London, with the thrill of the Eurostar gliding me through the English countryside, a vision of verdant fields and rolling hills rushing past the windows. I spent a luxurious night in London before taking the overnight train to Milan – pure, blissful travel indulgence!

First Stop: Shopping Paradise

Arriving in Milan, I felt that familiar surge of excitement - the kind that comes with knowing you're about to immerse yourself in a city that lives and breathes style. And trust me, Milan does not disappoint. I ventured into the bustling Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a magnificent glass-covered shopping arcade with breathtaking architecture. This place is heaven on earth for any fashionista! From Prada and Gucci to Armani and Dolce & Gabbana, every world-famous brand you can imagine lines the arcade's opulent interiors.

My senses were in overdrive - the bright colours, the luxurious textures, the gleaming windows showcasing exquisite creations. It's all a bit overwhelming, but in the best way possible! And it wouldn't be a proper Pink Tutu Milan post without a confession - I, of course, had to buy something! I spotted the most divine pink satin ballerina flats, a touch of whimsy that will definitely be getting some action on my upcoming Milan explorations.

An Evening of Italian Theatre

Now, my fellow ballerinas, I am a firm believer that no trip is complete without an evening at the theatre. And tonight was a special treat! We went to see "Aida" at the magnificent Teatro alla Scala. Talk about an opera! The performance was breathtaking - powerful voices, breathtaking sets, and a spectacle that left me speechless. I even snagged a prime seat in the royal box! (My charming escort had a friend who knew a friend – that’s the magic of being in Milan, the city that seems to work its magic on you!)

It wasn't just the music and the costumes that had me mesmerized - I loved watching the crowd, the palpable sense of excitement before the curtain even rose. A group of elegant women sat beside me, whispering excitedly about their favourite tenor, and even though I don’t understand Italian, I understood their passion, the joy of theatre, the shared experience of beauty and art.

And just imagine - "Aida" was actually performed at the Teatro alla Scala on the exact same date as my blog post – how serendipitous is that! I just have a feeling it's a day to remember forever, like one of those moments in life that become indelibly etched in your soul.

Milan's Hidden Gems: Exploring the City on Two Wheels

This morning, I wanted to experience Milan at a more leisurely pace. I hired a vintage bike with a beautiful wicker basket (perfect for my shopping loot!), and began a cycle along the Naviglio Grande. It was a picturesque canal with cobbled banks, overflowing with quaint cafes and shops. I couldn't help but stop and soak in the beautiful ambiance of it all.

The best part? This wasn’t your average tourist path. This area was packed with locals enjoying their Sunday afternoon - families having lunch on cafe terraces, teenagers enjoying gelato, and children chasing pigeons in the sun-drenched squares. I even bumped into a group of elderly women taking a leisurely stroll, all sporting vibrantly colored tutus! It just goes to show you, my ballet bunnies, that the magic of a tutu can be felt anywhere in the world!

Food, Glorious Food!

And speaking of delicious treats, how could I possibly be in Italy and not talk about the food! Oh, my! From creamy, caffeinated cappuccinos to perfectly prepared plates of pasta, my taste buds are dancing with delight.

For lunch, I devoured a delightful platter of local delicacies at an outdoor trattoria near the Duomo. Think melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto, tangy pecorino cheese, crusty bread, and an assortment of olives. It was heaven!

Later, for dinner, I had a delectable pizza margherita, its simple tomato, basil, and mozzarella ingredients making every bite a perfect symphony of flavor. My friends told me I must try the tiramisu, but my sugar-induced bliss wouldn't allow me to eat even a single crumb of this indulgent delight!

A Tutu For Every Occasion

Of course, while I'm exploring all of the amazing sights in Milan, my mission to make the world a more tutu-filled place is still on! And let me tell you, Milan has provided plenty of inspiration.

During my shopping adventures, I couldn’t help but notice a strong trend of whimsical and flamboyant fashion in the streets. Young women strutting around in colourful and creative outfits that defy traditional notions of what "stylish" should look like. It's bold, it’s fun, and it totally encourages me to embrace my own sense of style and to wear my tutu with even more confidence!

My Milan To-Do List

As I bid farewell to the charming city of Milan for now, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness leaving. However, there is so much left to see, taste, and explore!

Before I head back to England, my "To-Do" list includes a visit to the stunning Duomo Cathedral. This is on everyone's Milan itinerary for good reason - a magnificent building steeped in history, its breathtaking spires reaching for the heavens.

Then, it’s on to La Scala again, I hear they’re doing a fabulous performance of "Carmen," and I'd be remiss if I missed it!

I also need to explore the Sforza Castle and get a real dose of Italian culture, soaking up the art, history, and architectural magnificence.

And let’s not forget the shopping! I already have a wishlist a mile long, but you know me, I’m always ready to snag a bargain - or two, or three!

Until next week, darling ballet bunnies!

Ciao Bella,

Emma

P.S. I can't wait to tell you all about my next Milan adventures. Make sure to follow along at www.pink-tutu.com every Monday! Remember, every day is a chance to wear your heart (and your tutu) on your sleeve!
