Pink Tutu Milan: Post #996 - Ciao Bella, Milan!

Wednesday, 2014-07-09

Buongiorno, darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina, Emma, checking in from the glamorous streets of Milan! My suitcase is overflowing with sparkly tutus (because, let's face it, a girl can never have too many!), and I'm already planning out the perfect ballet-inspired outfits for my time here. After all, a trip to the fashion capital of the world isn't complete without a fabulous outfit or two (or ten). 😉

This week, I decided to take the plunge and finally make my Milan dream a reality. It’s been a lifelong ambition, you see. This is the place that dreams of dance are made – a haven for beautiful fashion and graceful movements. The city breathes elegance, and my darling, that’s just my cup of tea!

To get here, I decided to channel my inner Jane Eyre (sans the tragic love story, obviously). I journeyed by train from my lovely Derbyshire countryside home. The journey was just magical. The lush English fields turned into sprawling, sun-kissed Italian landscapes. And of course, my trusty pink tutu made the trip infinitely more fabulous – because, who wants to travel in boring old jeans anyway?!

I was immediately swept away by Milan’s undeniable charm. This place oozes style and grace, from the charming cobblestone streets to the awe-inspiring architecture. As I hopped off the train at Milan Centrale, I was welcomed by a bustling energy that crackled with excitement. The scent of freshly baked pastries from the little bakeries lining the street made my tummy rumble, and I swear I could almost hear the graceful footsteps of dancers practising in the shadows.

After settling into my quaint little Airbnb (with a stunning balcony overlooking a charming courtyard - perfect for twirling!), I took my first foray into Milanese life. I hopped onto a charming little tram, clinging to the little straps like a ballerina holding onto her centre (always balancing, you know!), and was transported through a world of colour and movement. The architecture was a feast for the eyes: stately buildings with grand arched doorways, pastel-coloured houses bursting with vibrant bougainvillea, and magnificent cathedrals soaring towards the azure sky. It’s a dream for a ballerina with an eye for the beautiful.

My first stop was La Scala Theatre. It’s considered one of the most iconic opera houses in the world. Walking up to its grand facade, with its dramatic arches and classical sculptures, made me feel like I'd stepped back into time. I could almost picture the elegant crowds of opera lovers, clad in dazzling gowns, spilling out into the streets centuries ago. I already have tickets booked for a show later in the week. Just thinking about seeing a performance here makes me want to leap and twirl in a full-on pirouette!

Now, let’s talk about my essential guide to Milan. A well-planned itinerary is key, and I’m here to help you make the most of your trip, whether you’re a tutu-wearing ballerina like myself, or a curious first-timer! So, pack your dance shoes, darling, it's time for a whirlwind adventure!

Milan - The Ballerina's Paradise

First stop, Fashion!

Milan is the undisputed queen of fashion, with luxury boutiques, trendy department stores and vintage havens galore. I love indulging in a bit of retail therapy, and it doesn't get better than in this fashion wonderland.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: A shopper's dream

My first stop on my fashion tour was the breathtaking Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a stunning glass-vaulted arcade right next to La Scala. It’s not just a place to shop, darling, it’s an experience!

Imagine this – you’re stepping into a magnificent palace of glass and iron, bathed in sunlight, where exquisite stores line the beautifully ornamented passageways. The vaulted ceiling is painted with stunning frescoes, and the whole space is alive with a bustling energy of shoppers and street performers. Just try not to get lost in all the fashionista fun!

This architectural wonder houses the most incredible brands – Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton – the list goes on and on! Of course, I couldn't resist browsing a few boutiques, even if I just wanted to bask in the sheer elegance of it all. Who knows, maybe I’ll be tempted by a new pink tutu! After all, they are a girl’s best friend.

The Quadrilatero d'Oro: Luxury's golden triangle

Another must-see destination is the Quadrilatero d’Oro, or "Golden Rectangle" as it's aptly named. This is where luxury lives – imagine a string of fashion houses draped with silk and shimmering fabrics, all bursting with fabulousness. This is where some of the most prestigious brands, such as Versace, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Cartier have made their home. This street truly defines Milan’s legendary flair for luxury and opulence! It’s enough to make a tutu-loving ballerina feel like a princess, even if just for a moment.

Vintage Chic

But it’s not all about the designer names, darlings! Milan also has a thriving vintage scene, full of unique finds that add a touch of timeless elegance to any outfit. If you're looking for something truly special, you have to explore the winding streets in the Brera neighbourhood and Porta Ticinese area, which are brimming with vintage clothing stores. These are little pockets of vintage magic, offering a chance to rediscover bygone styles and create unique looks. Trust me, there are so many treasures hidden in these corners, waiting to be uncovered.

Food Glorious Food

Shopping can be tiring, darling, but even more exhausting is resisting the delectable delights of Milan's culinary scene.

From Classic to Contemporary

This is the place to experience classic Italian cuisine in all its glory. I started my culinary journey at a small trattoria in a quiet corner. The rustic charm, the warm aroma of garlic and basil, and the taste of fresh pasta dishes just transported me straight into a beautiful Italian dream.

Panettone, my favourite!

One must-have treat, especially around the Christmas season, is panettone. This festive sweet bread is a traditional Italian delicacy and is best enjoyed with a good cup of espresso. There’s nothing better than savoring its fluffy, slightly sweet and citrusy notes while strolling along the charming streets.

Cocktails and Aperitivo

Later in the evening, it's time to indulge in Milan's legendary aperitivo tradition. Picture this: bustling, lively bars brimming with people enjoying drinks, snacks, and lively conversation under the twinkling lights. You order a drink, and you are showered with an array of delicious appetizers - olives, cheeses, cured meats, small pizzas, all designed to tempt and delight your senses. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a relaxing evening after a busy day exploring.

A Ballerina's Guide to Milan's Ballet Scene

My real passion is, of course, the ballet! So, I'm thrilled to say that Milan has a flourishing dance scene that's just bursting with talent!

The Teatro alla Scala

My ultimate ballet destination is the breathtaking Teatro alla Scala. It's a legendary house of dance and opera that exudes a captivating aura of grandeur. Even if you’re not a ballet aficionado, walking through its hallowed halls feels special. And oh, darling, just imagine witnessing a performance by one of the world’s most celebrated dance companies! To witness world-class dancers grace the stage, under a glittering chandelier and in front of a roaring audience – that’s what dreams are made of!

Ballet Schools and Workshops

If you’re an aspiring ballerina like me, you can't miss exploring Milan’s ballet schools and workshops. These institutions offer classes for dancers of all ages and skill levels, and you can experience the passion and discipline that defines this art form firsthand.

Ballet Street Style

Even the city's streets seem to dance. Street fashion here has a graceful, effortless elegance that complements a ballet enthusiast's soul. I spotted sleek black tutus paired with biker jackets, ballerina flats paired with printed dresses, and vibrant pink jumpsuits with graceful drapes - it’s ballet style with a modern twist!

Finding My Flow

A big part of the Milan experience for me has been the freedom to move. I have fallen in love with its public spaces where a spontaneous dance routine or a graceful walk is not just welcomed but embraced. I’ve enjoyed spending my afternoons discovering the city on foot – twirling through its enchanting squares and streets. I think there's a sense of effortless elegance and sophistication here that inspires every movement, including your dance moves.

My Tutu Style Adventures

My little pink tutu has already become a statement piece! I’ve even sparked a few conversations about the elegance and joy of dance.

Tutus for Every Occasion

I wore a blush-pink tutu over a flowy, white sundress as I wandered through the Galleria. It's the perfect way to bring a whimsical touch to any look while showcasing your love for ballet.

Ballet-inspired Style

I can't wait to put my unique ballet-inspired outfits on display! From shimmering, tulle-layered skirts to playful ballet-flat-and-pencil-skirt combinations, I've found the perfect way to fuse classic elegance with a touch of modern femininity. It’s all about embracing my inner ballerina!

Sharing My Love for Ballet

Of course, this adventure is more than just exploring. It’s also about spreading the joy of dance, one pink tutu at a time! It's about encouraging others to embrace the freedom and joy that dancing brings, no matter your age or experience.

I'm going to be exploring the local ballet classes, soaking up the artistry, and sharing my love for ballet with everyone I meet! I have this dream – this vision - of seeing everyone wear pink tutus, embracing their inner dancer and making the world a more whimsical, more graceful place!

Keep Twirling, Milan!

Milan, with its captivating charm and energy, is the perfect stage for my own personal performance, where I can explore my passion for dance and inspire others to dance their hearts out. I'm leaving with a sense of inspiration, and a pink tutu, forever imprinted with the memory of the beautiful Milan!

Until next week, darlings! Stay glamorous and always keep twirling!
