Pink Tutu Milan - Post #1176: Dancing into Winter Wonderland ❄️💖

Ciao Bella!

It's Wednesday 20th December, and I'm here in beautiful Milan, the fashion capital of the world, and boy oh boy, am I in my element!

The streets are practically twinkling with festive cheer – twinkling lights strung across cobbled lanes, snow-dusted shop windows displaying the most exquisite winter fashion, and the aroma of hot chocolate and panettone filling the crisp winter air. But there’s no snow here in Milan, which, to be honest, I'm quite happy about as my pink tutu and I tend to get a bit of a dampening effect from rain or snow. 😅

As you all know, my travels are all funded by the magic of dance - by performing in various ballets around the world. This week I was lucky enough to perform a charming piece in an outdoor theatre, just by the river. Imagine this, the air alive with Christmas carols, fairy lights twirling and reflecting in the river water, and I'm performing for a joyous crowd who clearly loved my rendition of “The Sugarplum Fairy”. I feel like a real princess in my pink tutu; it makes the most beautiful contrast against the snowy cityscape!

This week I've also had the pleasure of spending an afternoon at a rather splendid dance school here in Milan. The teacher was just fantastic, teaching us a wonderful and surprisingly invigorating waltz sequence that I’ve just had to try out for myself at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a breathtaking glass-roofed shopping mall, that reminded me of a real-life Christmas cracker! (Which reminds me, must remember to stock up on those before heading home for Christmas – I think I’ll pick up some special festive ballet-themed ones this year, you've got to think about the ballet-loving audience at Christmas, don’t you? 🩰🎄 ).

Speaking of Christmas, can you believe it’s almost here?! I feel like the past year flew by, like a whirlwind of dazzling shows, grand tutus, glamorous performances, and, of course, amazing shopping excursions! But before Christmas kicks in, I thought I’d take you all on a quick trip around my favourite parts of Milan - you know, my own little Pink Tutu Milan tour! Come on then, pack your dancing shoes, grab your Christmas presents and let’s get going…

The Pink Tutu Milan Itinerary - Because Shopping’s A Form Of Exercise Right? 🛍️💖

First stop, Via Monte Napoleone. Now, this is Milan's flagship street for haute couture. And if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I LOVE my clothes. And what better place to get lost in an extravagant shopping spree than in the heart of the fashion district! You’ll find just about every brand imaginable on this beautiful street. The architecture itself is a dream come true, all elegant balconies and grand arcades, a real fairytale street! But you might just find your jaw hitting the floor with prices. It’s more a case of window shopping for me, although the sheer artistry of each garment display really gets the creative juices flowing!

My little tutu loves a twirl around the chic, modern, and vibrant boutiques, where some of the top international fashion houses are represented. And I always pop into the elegant shoe shop windows; I simply can’t resist the sleek, delicate craftsmanship! From glittering Louboutins to understated Tod’s, there's a shoe for every style! If I ever get tired of wearing tutus (imagine!), it’s fair to say this street could make me a shoeaholic in an instant. 👠

Of course, no trip to Milan is complete without a trip to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Imagine the most beautiful shopping arcade, a masterpiece of glass and steel, with stunning stained glass windows, exquisite sculptures, and intricate mosaic floors. It really is a treat for the eyes! I’ve spent many an hour gazing at the magnificent architecture, from its elaborate domed ceiling to its dazzling chandeliers, but let’s face it, the main draw for most is the luxury shops. It’s a must-visit, especially during the festive season, when it is sparkling with festive lights and overflowing with shoppers eager to find the perfect gift for their loved ones. Plus, the ice-cream parlours serve the best hot chocolate you’ll ever find. Trust me, there is a hot chocolate for every taste and for every weather - creamy, spicy, chocolatey - perfection!

Of course, you’re in Milan, so what better way to soak in the glamour of the fashion capital than with a glamorous afternoon tea at the Hotel Principe di Savoia. This grand dame of hotels exudes opulence from the moment you step into its lavish lobby. I’m not going to lie; my eyes practically pop out at the sheer luxurious grandeur, so much so that even a regular pink tutu can feel out of place!

But the pièce de résistance of the afternoon is the exquisitely presented selection of dainty sandwiches, pastries, and cakes. And let’s not forget about the bottomless tea; they do a special holiday blend at this time of year, with star anise and cinnamon. It truly is a sensory delight – the aromas of the tea, the sweet and savoury tastes of the treats, and, of course, the magnificent surroundings, are all quite frankly heavenly.

The highlight for me, however, has to be the charming* Piazza Duomo*. It's a symphony of colour, with the most beautiful medieval cathedral and iconic buildings towering over a bustling, joyful crowd, and the scent of hot chocolate and pastries swirling around the air, the sound of buskers entertaining the crowd - Milan truly becomes alive at Christmas time. It's one of those magical places that draws you in with its incredible beauty. It truly feels like a scene from a romantic fairytale!

My little pink tutu and I tend to spend a bit of time gazing at the Duomo every time I visit, it’s one of those landmark sights that draws me back again and again. The Cathedral itself is breath-taking, all intricate carvings and spires, which almost look like sugar decorations, as though crafted by a giant, fantastical gingerbread baker. I find it incredibly inspiring, a reminder of all the artistic passion that pours into the soul of this city.

There are a multitude of street performers around the piazza as well; always ready to amaze you with their magic tricks, street dances and impressive street artistry. I have to admit, I always get caught up in their energy! Especially at this time of year, when everyone seems a bit more willing to embrace the joy of giving, of community, and of celebrating the beautiful gift of life!

On my way back from the piazza, I always find myself at the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery, a place filled with masterpieces. The museum's beautiful cloisters have often inspired many paintings on display and always captivate my artistic side, filled with statues and ancient columns, there is so much history in the air it almost feels tangible!

Inside, the gallery houses an array of Renaissance and Baroque works of art, a real testament to the power and beauty of the human imagination. If I were to imagine the artwork itself taking centre stage on the ballet stage, well I can already feel a shiver down my spine! What incredible possibilities. It's just the sort of inspiration I crave, to get me thinking outside the box. To always keep learning, exploring new artistic territories, never standing still!

But after a day of artistic adventures, my stomach always lets me know that it needs a bit of love and nourishment, so it’s straight off to Luini's. It’s probably the most famous panzerotto joint in Milan, offering a delicious array of cheesy, stuffed bread balls - with all the cheesy goodness imaginable.

Luini’s has been a family favourite for generations and still makes some of the most beautiful panzerottis in all of Italy. I could happily eat my way through a whole tray! The fillings are all so delicious and mouth-watering – from classic prosciutto and mozzarella to more adventurous seafood fillings. It’s no wonder they’re such a big hit, they’re so damn good, especially when dipped in a warm tomato sauce or hot mustard, mmm… Just a bit too messy for a pink tutu, but a perfect meal nonetheless.

For an authentic Milanese treat, head over to Il Bar Degli Artisti. This is my favourite spot to indulge in a spot of Aperitivo! Imagine a long bar crammed with the locals, everyone happily buzzing away and exchanging jokes in fluent Italian, with the delicious aroma of Negroni cocktails and Aperol Spritz swirling in the air. If it’s good enough for the Milanese locals, then it’s certainly good enough for a Pink Tutu Ballerina! It truly is the heart of the city - so lively, so joyful, such a vibrant atmosphere - it truly does feel like every moment is a celebration. The best part is they offer free snacks, as is tradition for Aperitivo, meaning the bar gets extra-busy for happy hour - the crowd overflowing onto the pavement. Just another way that Milanans do life in style!

And, for a truly grand dining experience, book a table at Ristorante La Terrazza. It’s the very best spot for gazing over Milan's sprawling rooftops, all lit up for Christmas. There is just something quite romantic about seeing the city twinkling in the evening. And the menu is just divine – think Michelin-starred Italian cuisine with stunning panoramic views of the Duomo and surrounding skyline - a real feast for the eyes as well as for the taste buds.

And, on the theme of feasting for the eyes, Milan is home to several magnificent theatres, showcasing the finest ballet, opera and theatrical performances, with one of the biggest and most iconic being the Teatro Alla Scala. It is such a glamorous theatre that it always gets my pink tutu excited - the history of the building, the intricate ornamentation and opulent design. The air inside feels charged, full of passion and excitement! The grand, sweeping staircases feel perfect for graceful twirls - well, just as long as I can keep hold of my Tutu. It tends to feel like it gets carried away on the flow of music and energy here!

Pink Tutu Milan Adventures Continue: The Magic Of Ballet 🩰

Of course, it wouldn't be a Pink Tutu Milan trip without some wonderful ballet shows, would it? And let me tell you, Milan is an absolute treasure trove when it comes to dancing. From classical ballet to modern and contemporary styles, there's a ballet for everyone to enjoy! And of course, all with a dash of Pink Tutu flair thrown in for good measure!

But just before I bring my Milan adventures to a close this week, I want to share a bit more of a personal ballet experience with you. It’s something a bit special that took place at one of my recent ballet performances - something that brought me immense joy and filled me with a deep sense of gratitude.

During the performance, just after the curtain fell, this young girl, she must have been about six, ran up to me with eyes wide with excitement, holding a pink tutu! “For you! I made this just for you!" she said in a cute little accent, clearly with much pride, her small fingers holding onto the edges.

As I took it from her, it felt so soft and warm - just like the embrace of a childhood memory - a magical and magical reminder of all the joy that comes with following your passion for dance. And you know what, the sweet little tutu was just the perfect size to fit my Pink Tutu bag, and let me tell you, there’s no better accessory when you want to spread the joy of dance to all your ballet-loving friends! I know just the next little dancer I can pass it on to 😊.

To this day, my pink tutu keeps me grounded and connects me to something much larger than myself, reminding me to celebrate life in all its glorious possibilities - whether you’re a ballet performer, an artist, a writer, a shop assistant - find your passion, live it, and inspire others!

So what can you find to see and do in Milan? Loads. The Christmas market has already begun! Lots of yummy panettone and sweet delicacies! So if you're heading over this way, grab your tutu, get out your camera and let's have some fun! I will try my best to get back to all your questions!

Catch ya next week on Pink Tutu Blog, I promise to bring more magical stories of the season! 💖
