Pink Tutu Milan: #1256 - A Week in the City of Fashion

Ciao, darling! It's Emma, your favourite tutu-clad travel companion, back from a whirlwind week in Milan, the city that never sleeps... well, maybe not until the last designer boutique closes, anyway!

This week, I’ve been in the gorgeous, bustling, fashion-forward metropolis, with its grand Duomo, its labyrinthine streets and of course, the abundance of delicious, fresh pasta and gelato. And I have to tell you, my trip has been bursting with pink, tutus and all the things that make my heart skip a beat (or a plié, if you will!).

A Glimpse Into Milan’s Ballet Scene

As a professional ballerina myself (although I like to think I’m a bit of a fashion-forward one, too!), seeing ballet performances is always a priority for me. Milan doesn’t disappoint in the ballet world. I spent an afternoon at the Teatro alla Scala, one of the most famous opera houses in the world. I was absolutely spellbound by the choreography, the costumes, and the incredible talent on stage. The music was divine, and the story, a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, had me weeping with emotion.

I can’t deny a little part of me wishes I’d had the chance to dance on that stage, but hey, we all have dreams! For now, I’ll settle for seeing the beautiful dancers execute their leaps and twirls, and maybe even steal a little inspiration for my own moves. Maybe, one day, I’ll even take a class at the renowned Scuola di Ballo del Teatro alla Scala - who knows?!

From Tutus to Trains: A Milanese Day Out

This time around, I explored the city like a true local. Milan, you see, is a place where you can go from a glamorous fashion show one minute to an authentic, traditional neighbourhood the next. And, one of the best ways to truly feel the pulse of the city is by using its excellent tram system. I have to confess, I always love to add a bit of my own personal style to my travels, and a pink tutu paired with a sharp little black jacket and statement shoes did just the trick for navigating the Milanese tram system! Don’t get me wrong, I looked absolutely stunning. But don't think for a second that I wasn't enjoying a hot latte while soaking in the view.

Shopping, Shopping, Shopping… and a Bit More Shopping

Now, no trip to Milan would be complete without indulging in a little retail therapy. Oh my, the stores in Milan are a veritable haven for fashionistas! This time around, I snagged a pair of beautiful, custom-made pink ballet flats that will match my favourite pink tulle skirt perfectly.

It was a very exciting day! And a great way to relax after the energy of the Scala.

Beyond Ballet: Embracing Milan’s Culinary Delights

The food! It truly was delicious. And speaking of food, I'd be remiss not to mention my newfound love for Aperol Spritzes - those are basically my life's motto: a refreshing blend of sweetness and zest, with a little bit of pink thrown in for good measure. But my biggest revelation? Panna cotta. Now, that is truly a dish fit for a princess - silky smooth, light as a feather and totally my new go-to dessert!

Pink Tutus & Milan: A Match Made in Heaven

Now, for my fellow pink tutu-wearers, if you find yourself in the charming, artistic streets of Milan, here are a few of my personal must-do’s:

  • Visit the Duomo: A symbol of Milan’s glorious past and present. This towering masterpiece of gothic architecture is simply breathtaking. And what better way to add a dash of personal style than with a pink tutu while exploring? I even had some passing locals offer me flowers! So, if you’re feeling brave, I challenge you to twirl once or twice near this majestic cathedral for a picture-perfect moment.
  • Stroll through the Brera district: This cobblestoned neighbourhood is the ultimate destination for art, fashion and the charm of Milan’s bohemian heart. Take your time to admire the quaint, vintage boutiques, independent artists’ studios and the breathtaking Pinacoteca di Brera, a museum that houses some of Italy's greatest works of art.
  • Enjoy a luxurious picnic in the Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli: Embrace the sunshine and escape to this verdant oasis in the city centre. This stunning public garden has it all – beautiful fountains, statues, blooming flowers and an air of tranquil beauty. Bring along your favourite snacks, a good book and of course, your pink tutu, and indulge in a relaxed moment.
  • Watch the world go by at a local cafe: Don’t be afraid to grab a coffee and observe the fascinating hustle and bustle of Milanese life. A good place for a quick stop is Caffé Sant'Ambreo, a café where they offer you a little drink if you buy a cappuccino. And when I say little drink, they actually do mean LITTLE! The café has a tiny espresso machine dating back to the late 1800s and all the espresso glasses are absolutely miniature, maybe only a tablespoon of coffee each. And the taste - absolutely divine. Perfect for my mini-ballet routines on the marble-topped tables.

To Pink and Beyond… Stay Tuned for More Adventures!

My trip to Milan has truly been magical. From the graceful ballerinas to the grand architecture to the city's love affair with fashion, this place has stolen a piece of my heart. So, I'll be sure to leave a little bit of my pink tutu magic in its beautiful, vibrant streets. Until next time, darling!
