Pink Tutu Milan: Wednesday, 2020-09-30 (Post #1321)

Buongiorno, darlings! Emma here, back from a whirlwind tour of Milan, Italy, the city of fashion, food, and – dare I say it? – a surprising abundance of pink tutus! It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means: it’s time for another Pink Tutu Milan blog post.

This week in Milan…

It feels like just yesterday I was waving goodbye to the Derbyshire countryside, and I know my family were probably relieved – a week is usually long enough for them to miss their favorite tutu-wearing adventurer, right? But Milan! Oh, Milan, how I love thee! It's just impossible to be down in the dumps in a city where the pavements are practically made of marble, the shops boast designs that make your eyes widen, and even the pigeons seem to strut with a touch of Parisian chic.

This week, I decided to focus on embracing the beauty of Milan’s culture, something I always find a good balance with all my shopping and sightseeing! After all, you can’t live on fashion alone, even when it’s in Milan, where every store is a kaleidoscope of the latest trends.

A taste of Teatro alla Scala

Of course, no trip to Milan is complete without experiencing the magic of Teatro alla Scala, the city’s famous opera house. As the sun set, casting long shadows over the elegant Piazza della Scala, I found myself on the front steps, the iconic marble facade bathed in the warm glow of the streetlamps. Inside, the atmosphere was electrifying. The opulent grandeur of the interior was breathtaking – velvet seating, crystal chandeliers, ornate sculptures – it was almost overwhelming, and just what you'd expect from the opera house in a city known for its elegance!

I went for an opera performance by Puccini and I’ve never experienced such beauty! The passion of the music, the power of the vocals, the grace of the performers, and the breathtaking artistry – it was like stepping into a fairy tale, with a dash of theatricality and a healthy dose of history. It’s just a pity that, as much as I admire the elegant, almost impossibly perfect performance and artistry, you are not permitted to wear a tutu, however much you are moved. Alas!

Back to my tutu roots...

You’ll never catch me at a loss for tutu-inspired fun! I’d spotted a beautiful and brightly-coloured Tutu store down one of Milan’s quieter streets, the sign painted with such detail I knew I just had to go in! I bought myself an adorable, shimmering new addition to my tutu wardrobe - the colours of the sequins reflected the vibrant Italian atmosphere and reminded me of a shimmering disco ball – perfect!

Onwards to a day of exploration…

Armed with my new purchase, a hearty espresso, and a map of Milan, I hopped onto the trusty tram for an impromptu day of sightseeing. Milan’s tram system, by the way, is a true testament to efficiency – it whisks you across the city without breaking a sweat, allowing you to absorb the sights at your own pace.

I first stopped at the breathtaking Duomo di Milano, its spires piercing the sky. I found myself captivated by the intricacy of its stonework and the awe-inspiring presence of this historical masterpiece. It really felt like something out of a Disney film - maybe I’m dreaming!

Then, onto Castello Sforzesco, another masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. I explored its impressive ramparts, strolled through the courtyard, and felt a deep connection with the history of this remarkable building. A perfect example of medieval architecture with all its intricacies!

My exploration continued to include the magnificent Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. I spent some time lost in admiration of the mosaic floor and glass vaulted ceilings and was soon caught up in a symphony of designer shops, art galleries, cafes, and charming little trattorias. I even indulged in some delicious, gelato which had a truly wonderful strawberry flavour.

It's time for some relaxation

After all that sightseeing, I realised I had earned a bit of rest. Luckily, my hotel had a rooftop terrace offering breathtaking views over the city - the Duomo shining like a diamond in the afternoon light. As I settled back into my favorite comfy chair with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, I started reflecting on what a truly incredible day I'd had in Milan. This truly was my day – all pink tutus, sparkly shoes and beautiful Milan architecture. The magic of a Wednesday in Milan.

My outfit...

What did I wear today? Why, my go-to ballet flats for comfort, and a fluffy, beautiful blush pink tulle skirt! I teamed that with a floral print chiffon top which swayed in the warm, Milanese wind and a simple, pearl-toned belt to tie it all together. I am really living that classic ballet aesthetic!
