Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Post #31: New York, New York, It's So Fine!

Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, back from the Big Apple, where dreams come true, or at least that's what they say! I've been having the most fabulous time exploring this city, from the top of the Empire State Building to the cobblestone streets of Greenwich Village.

This week has been absolutely magical. New York City really is something special, and as a girly girl from Derbyshire who loves tutus and everything pink, this city is pure magic. Let me tell you, they know how to do fashion in NYC. And with my latest pink tutu outfit (think fluffy, frilly, and fabulous!), I was turning heads everywhere I went.

Monday, January 8th, 1996

I arrived in New York on Sunday night, and let me tell you, stepping off that plane onto American soil felt like a dream. The air buzzed with energy and excitement, a whirlwind of honking taxis, chattering tourists, and the smell of hotdogs and pretzels - I was truly in the heart of New York City! I booked myself a sweet little apartment near Central Park – a lovely, vintage building with the most beautiful ornate door I've ever seen, and a fire escape that overlooks the bustling streets below.

The best part? I’ve found a charming little cafe just around the corner, and they make the most delicious pastries and hot chocolate, perfect for starting the day on a high note.

Monday was my first proper day in the city, so I had to wear my new tutu, which, by the way, has layers of pale pink tulle and sequins that glitter in the sunshine! It was the perfect choice for exploring all the iconic sights and grabbing some incredible shots for my blog.

Firstly, I went for a morning stroll in Central Park. Imagine this: the crisp, clear morning air, a golden glow over the skyscrapers in the distance, and me, twirling amongst the leaves and fallen branches of this beautiful green oasis. Central Park truly lives up to the hype; it’s a welcome escape from the noise and bustle of the city, offering some welcome serenity amidst the urban landscape. It's a reminder that nature and city life can perfectly coexist, even in the concrete jungle!

After my park adventures, I headed straight to the Lincoln Center to catch a show at the Metropolitan Opera House! Let's be honest, nothing gets me going quite like an opera! This was my dream. It was a grand performance of Puccini’s "Tosca", and the dramatic aria "Vissi d'arte" brought tears to my eyes, the passion, the heartbreak, and the beautiful singing – I felt like I was right there in the story!

To celebrate, I treated myself to a classic New York delicacy – a bagel from the iconic Ess-a-Bagel near my apartment! Let's just say, that’s my go-to breakfast from now on – toasted with cream cheese, of course!

Tuesday, I took the Metro down to Soho. Let’s just say the Metro was quite an experience! I'm used to the rather prim and proper British trains, so it felt rather overwhelming at first, but also, kinda exciting! Everyone looked so cool and edgy; a complete contrast to my cute and girly style!

In Soho, the sidewalks were overflowing with trendy boutiques and independent stores bursting with fabulous vintage finds and unique jewellery designs. This is where I discovered my new favorite scarf - a gorgeous silk creation in shades of blush and lavender with intricate floral embroidery! Oh, and I picked up some funky silver earrings with little pink butterflies that matched my outfit perfectly!

That evening, I decided to be a tourist and ventured out to see Times Square, which was literally ablaze with twinkling lights and a buzz that vibrates through your very soul!

As you may know, I’m obsessed with musical theatre, so of course, a Broadway show was on the agenda. I chose "Les Misérables," the emotional masterpiece. My heart was so full watching the characters battle for their dreams in that iconic performance. This really was a New York bucket-list experience ticked off!

And the evening couldn't end without some iconic New York pizza! Let's just say I had two slices, but it was well worth the extra calories. This city has an intoxicating vibe, one that keeps you going all night, exploring its countless delights and vibrant energy.

For Wednesday, I wanted to experience the real heart of the city – so a day spent in Little Italy and Chinatown was on the menu! These are truly cultural melting pots. Little Italy is bursting with the aromas of Italian pastries and fresh pasta; a sensory feast for your tastebuds! Chinatown was just as amazing, a world within a city, packed with vibrant red lanterns, ancient apothecaries selling mysterious herbal remedies, and little tea shops brewing traditional green tea. It's like a real-life travel book come to life!

The streets are packed with local life; people chatting away in their native tongue, families enjoying dumplings, and shopkeepers expertly chopping up vegetables in a blur of knife skills!

After a very busy and fulfilling Wednesday, I just needed to relax. What’s more calming than a relaxing afternoon by the East River? I walked along the promenade, and the views across the city were absolutely spectacular! Seeing the iconic skyline from across the water gave me a whole new perspective of New York; it’s really quite stunning.

That evening, I treated myself to some luxurious shopping! My wallet may be feeling the strain but, oh my gosh, the things I bought! A pink beaded purse that shimmers under the city lights and the most perfect pair of white satin pumps that will add a touch of grace and elegance to any outfit.

Thursday, I decided to venture beyond the confines of Manhattan to experience the true soul of the city. I grabbed myself a metro ticket, (and of course, took some Instagrammable shots for my followers!) and headed out on an adventure to Brooklyn.

As soon as I got there, the pace of the city changed; Brooklyn seemed more relaxed and bohemian, with independent shops, quirky cafes, and charming, brick-lined streets.

Brooklyn was where I went in search of my new favourite pair of dancing shoes. A beautiful, vintage shop I stumbled across had a selection of incredible vintage ballet shoes – just my style! They were the softest blush pink with delicate satin ribbons, a perfect match for my tutu! It's so hard to resist these vintage pieces, each with its own little story, worn by ballerinas from years gone by!

The rest of the evening was spent wandering the charming streets of Williamsburg and Williamsburg Bridge Park, which gave me stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. I had the best veggie burger at a hip burger joint - and of course, took photos for my Instagram and Pink Tutu Blog followers! It was a beautiful Thursday evening; a mix of hipster vibes, charming surroundings and that quintessential New York magic.

Now, this is where my ballet roots really shined! Friday, it was back to the iconic New York City Ballet, the company that sets the standard in ballet around the world!

Oh, and I managed to get tickets to the annual fundraising Gala performance - let's just say my heart was overflowing with joy at getting a chance to experience something so truly special. It was such an extravagant affair, with all the bigwigs of the dance world in attendance.

And of course, I put on my prettiest tutu; a confection of feathers, tulle, and sequins, all shimmering under the crystal chandeliers of the theater. It's a beautiful theatre; with opulent details, plush velvet seats, and an atmosphere buzzing with energy. I took my place in the audience, feeling a sense of belonging among fellow ballet enthusiasts, ready to be transported by the elegance of classical ballet!

There was a stunning production of “Swan Lake,” the beautiful classic choreography combined with exceptional artistry and technical brilliance of the dancers – it was truly inspiring. I have been reliving it in my dreams every night! The grandeur, the music, and the story are so emotionally powerful! It was, honestly, magical, and as the curtain fell on this truly memorable experience, I felt overwhelmed by the raw emotion of the show. It was quite an emotional evening!

After the performance, we went out to celebrate. A night in Greenwich Village at a small but buzzing jazz club – perfect for letting my hair down, indulging in the bohemian ambiance, and listening to talented jazz musicians creating enchanting melodies in a smoky, intimate setting.

Saturday, January 13th, 1996

What a way to end my trip! A little shopping and, of course, a lovely brunch with a glass of bubbly to celebrate my whirlwind week. I decided to treat myself to a vintage New York taxi tour. Imagine, the Big Apple rushing by through the tinted windows - what a classic experience!

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the breeze through your hair and the rush of a bustling city unfolding in front of your eyes. It truly makes you feel like you've been living in the heart of New York City. And you know, being able to drive past some of those iconic landmarks - like the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and of course the Empire State Building – is an absolute joy, reminding me why I love this vibrant city.

So that's it! New York, you were incredible! A city where every corner promises an adventure; a city of lights, endless possibility, and truly, truly magical! I can't wait to visit you again – there’s so much more to see! I'll definitely be sharing my favourite spots with you all on my blog!

What have I learned?

New York is a place where dreams come true - so, always believe in yourself and never stop chasing your passion, just like me, I'm spreading the pink tutu love across the globe, one step, one twirl, one performance at a time!

Stay fabulous and stay tuned for next week's blog from a new destination!

Love, Emma xxx
