Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #71 - Tutu-ing Around the Big Apple!

Hello my lovely tutu-ers! It’s Monday, October 14th, 1996, and guess what? Your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina is back in the Big Apple! I can’t believe it’s been a whole week since I last graced this fabulous city with my presence – time flies when you’re having fun!

This week has been jam-packed with adventures, starting with a mesmerising performance at the Metropolitan Opera House. I danced alongside some truly talented dancers in "Giselle," a ballet that left me completely spellbound. I mean, the costumes were breathtaking, the story was utterly captivating, and the dancing… well, it was just pure magic. You know I can never resist a twirl after a fantastic show, and let me tell you, that beautiful, soaring, chandelier-filled space at the Met is just the perfect place for a twirl. It made my pink tutu feel right at home!

But before I dive into the whirlwind of events that took place, let’s chat about the fashion, shall we? This week’s sartorial highlight is a stunning hot pink sequined bodice. I'm telling you, it shimmered like a thousand twinkling stars and just added that extra sparkle to my tutu. Of course, a feather boa is essential for any fashionista exploring New York City. It's the perfect accessory to keep your neck warm in those drafty underground tunnels - not to mention adding an extra touch of chicness.

Let's talk subway! As much as I adore those majestic yellow cabs, there's something about the thrill of the subway that really gets me going. This week, my journey involved a whirlwind tour of the Lower East Side, culminating in a delightful afternoon of shopping. I even picked up a pair of pink velvet ballet shoes, a must-have for my growing tutu-loving wardrobe!

Now, onto the main attraction - this week's show. After the ballet at the Met, it was off to the historic Apollo Theatre in Harlem for a night of music, laughter, and just good old-fashioned fun. Oh, and I can't forget to mention that Stevie Wonder was performing! It was truly an unforgettable night.

This amazing theatre holds so much history. The stories whispered through the walls of this venue make me tingle with excitement - it was once a haven for those pioneering, talented souls who changed the landscape of music. To think that so many amazing legends had performed on that very same stage where I was swaying my tutu was quite an honour!

Stevie Wonder himself, a man of such incredible talent and grace, had the whole theatre under his spell. The audience sang and danced along to his music, their faces radiant with joy. It was a reminder of the powerful, unifying nature of music and just how much joy it brings into the world. It's no surprise that this iconic space has been nicknamed "The Cradle of Soul," "The Harlem Apollo," and "The World’s Most Famous Theatre.”

I managed to snag a delicious slice of pizza right by the Apollo before catching the subway back downtown. Oh, you just can't get better pizza than New York pizza - trust me!

*Speaking of pizza, that leads me to a quick chat about my mission to get everyone to wear a pink tutu. * After all, who doesn’t love a bit of playful fashion? It's all about embracing our individuality and expressing ourselves through clothes, you know. I can imagine all the fun to be had: seeing a bus driver rock a pink tutu, a businessman on his lunch break waltzing down Wall Street in a bright pink tutu, or even the cashier at my local bodega with a tutu under her apron! Now that would be something special, don’t you think? I even had a little chat about this idea with some fellow passengers on the subway. One fellow said he’d give it a go but said he preferred his tutu in blue!

Speaking of individuality, my passion for ballet is an essential part of my being. The grace, the discipline, the expression… it all feeds my soul. It is so exciting to see how much the art of dance has permeated this city. Walking through Times Square or stopping for a delicious coffee in Greenwich Village, it is so easy to catch a flash of dance at every corner! My current goal is to join the esteemed School of American Ballet. Imagine - training in the same halls as world-renowned dancers like Gelsey Kirkland and Maria Tallchief - it would be an honour to dance amongst such luminaries. This is a dream I won't let go of, one tutu-filled step at a time.

So, until next week, keep dancing, keep dreaming, and most importantly, keep rocking those pink tutus!

Love,

Emma

P.S. I know what you’re thinking! I was also thinking…what would happen if I started a “Pink Tutu Wednesday” where we could all share a picture of our most flamboyant and favourite tutu outfits. Imagine all the wonderful ways we could celebrate and be fabulous! I would be absolutely delighted if you would all send a picture of your tutu outfits by Friday - I can’t wait to see! Share your beautiful tutus!

P.P.S. What would happen if we could set up a “Tutu-themed cafe” in New York City? A place with pink walls and ballet music, a fabulous brunch menu, and delicious cocktails like the "Pink Tutu Delight" or the "Prima Ballerina" and just a general sense of cheer! Who’s with me?
