Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #88 New York, New York - Monday 1997-02-10

Hello lovelies!

It's Emma here, and I'm so thrilled to be back in the Big Apple for another dazzling week of adventure! I simply can't get enough of this city that never sleeps, especially in this incredible, vibrant pink tutu that I picked up on a whim in the Lower East Side yesterday. It's truly the perfect outfit to twirl through the streets, and to feel the energy of this captivating metropolis.

It feels like I just landed back from London last week, where I danced for the wonderful patrons at the Covent Garden. Remember how I promised to take you all behind the scenes at one of my performances? Well, I'll just have to share a bit of that story when I get back from this magical New York trip! It's just that, after all those fancy gowns and costumes, I feel quite happy to be rocking this pink tutu that I bought with my ballet earnings – all my own hard work! And you can't deny that there is a certain satisfaction that comes with wearing pink, and nothing feels more magical than dancing in a tutu.

And oh, how I love New York. Just imagine, I travelled here from the quiet and countryside charm of Derbyshire, England. From lush, green pastures, I found myself whisked away to this concrete jungle – with a few train journeys, planes, and some help from the fabulous, fast, and easy New York Metro. I'll be honest, when I arrived, I was utterly charmed by the endless cityscapes and the sheer buzz of the place. From the first sip of coffee at a bustling street cafe to the sound of a jazzy tune wafting from a tiny speakeasy – it all just felt exciting, and a touch dangerous. I love it. You can't tell me New York is not the greatest city on earth.

But before I tell you all about my latest fashion finds – yes, I do indulge in some seriously fabulous window shopping, especially at Bloomingdale’s, and at some little boutiques tucked away on those quaint, hidden-away streets, there's something I have to tell you. The New York Theatre is, of course, world famous, but something that is even better are the street performances you see here in the heart of Manhattan. I had the luck of walking past a group of incredible, sassy dancers performing on Broadway! I was mesmerised by their power, their beauty, and the raw passion they poured into every move. They were a joy to behold and, I can't even begin to explain what it felt like, to get lost in the moment as they spun and danced to a jazzy score. The air thrummed with music and energy, and even my feet started to tap to the rhythm. These performers gave me the same kind of buzz that I felt the first time I danced onstage at the Royal Ballet!

Right now, as I write this, my stomach is actually growling. There is no other place on earth where you find this many different food cultures in such a small space! It's the true beauty of New York City! And for those of you who follow my blog and haven't been here, oh how I would love to take you all out on a little Pink Tutu adventure through New York, all while we discover the best hot dog vendors, Italian pasta and pizza havens, or maybe even a taste of something from the French bakery on Madison Avenue! Who wants a pink, fluffy pastry, right here, right now? I can almost smell it now! And can I mention how delicious the ice cream from Ferrara's on the Bowery is?

But for today, my loves, it's about to get really interesting. You all know that a ballet show is a real favourite of mine! Today I'm making my way to Lincoln Center. I have heard the ballet is utterly wonderful there, and this time I am determined to buy myself tickets! I can just imagine my elegant pink tutu twirling on those seats! It's an image I'm looking forward to sharing with you all next week, and I think it will look divine with some fancy opera glasses to peer down at the stage from.

Oh, and before I go, how about a little bit about my outfits.

This is how a girly girl in her 20s gets around New York! From a ballerina, to a traveller, to a writer. I've taken inspiration from the glamourous look of the late Audrey Hepburn, paired with the easy grace of Katherine Hepburn (sorry if I am confusing your names but I just love the two of them!). Let’s have a pink tutu, with the most amazing pink tights and, you guessed it, an oh so pink dress!

Today, you see me pairing my pink tutu with a luxurious cashmere sweater and some high top Converse trainers, with a gorgeous sparkly little pink clutch to hold all of my essential accessories. I have also discovered some stunning silk pink scarves here in New York that I am absolutely besotted with! You will not believe the exquisite fabrics I’ve discovered here – and they pair oh so well with the delicate pink ribbons that adorn my trusty tutus. And speaking of my trusty tutus! I think my new favourite has to be the tulle number that has soft little pink flowers, embroidered around it! My friends in London all laughed when I first showed it off, they said it made me look like a Victorian fairytale character, but you know what, sometimes I love to take things too far!

My lovelies, it's time for me to hop onto the New York Metro and see where the day will take me! After my ballet, I might even venture to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's said to be a treasure trove of fashion! Maybe I'll even spot a new pink item! And, if I am really lucky, there might even be a cute Parisian bakery next door that I could stop off at! And remember my darling, the world’s your oyster when you wear pink!

Remember to keep up to date with my Pink Tutu Blog, posted every Monday here at www.pink-tutu.com. If you like the Pink Tutu look and love fashion as much as I do, do leave a comment! You know what they say – nothing good ever happens unless you’re wearing pink!

Much Love,

Emma. xx
