Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #94 - New York, New York, it's a wonderful town!

Hello my darlings! Welcome back to another installment of the Pink Tutu Blog, this time emanating from the heart of New York City! It's Monday, the 24th of March, 1997, and oh, the adventures I've had this week!

Let me paint you a picture... Imagine cobbled streets, towering buildings scraping the heavens, the constant symphony of honking cabs, and, oh, the shopping! I'm here on my first trip to this magical metropolis, and every moment feels like a dream.

Before I even stepped foot on these iconic streets, my arrival was pure theatrical magic. I had a most splendid performance last week at a charity gala in Derbyshire. The whole event felt so swish and posh, and to my delight, I even raised enough to buy a new pair of pointe shoes and a very fetching, fuchsia-pink, polka dot tutu. My sponsors were over the moon! They said my performance was “enchanting” and “exuberant.” Well, it wasn't all roses, I had a tiny wardrobe malfunction mid-performance, my shoe slipped, but, I stayed strong, pirouetted around it and it's just a fun memory to reminisce over.

The minute I stepped onto that red-eye flight to JFK, I felt like my entire being was bursting with a kaleidoscope of excitement! Everything in New York seems grander, louder, brighter. The people here are an exhilarating whirlwind of individuality - so much personality on show in their outfits.

I must admit, I felt a little lost navigating the bustling subway. So many platforms, so many lines, so many... people! My darling Tutu and I found ourselves crammed into a crowded carriage, but even there, amongst all that humanity, it was captivating. I just held onto the handrails for dear life, smiled brightly, and imagined myself being a part of a massive ballet tableau, dancing along with everyone!

But of course, my heart was set on finding a spectacular performance for the weekend. So, a trip to the New York Public Library (how I loved the majestic architecture, just beautiful) and I landed myself a coveted ticket to see The Nutcracker by the American Ballet Theatre. Oh my stars, it was sensational! The grandeur of the Metropolitan Opera House left me breathless, and the choreography was so captivatingly magical. The snowstorm sequence, simply spectacular, just breathtaking! And the Sugar Plum Fairy? She was a vision in pink, absolutely perfect, a perfect ballet idol!

Now, speaking of ballet and all things pink, I am so ecstatic! I had a real serendipitous find today - the most glorious pink tutu boutique on Fifth Avenue! Everything was shades of pink, even the carpet was rose-hued! There were fluffy tulle skirts, whimsical dresses, and, of course, several tiers of the most delightful, pink tutus! It was pure, utter, sartorial joy!

They even had a "pink tutu party" planned for this evening, an exclusive event showcasing the new designs! I simply couldn’t resist and snapped up an appointment to attend. What can I say, sometimes, we all just need to live a little.

The city has enchanted me so far, the energy is intoxicating. This week, I'm aiming to catch the Broadway show Rent as it's a must-see and explore the vibrant street scene, looking out for those bold street performers, perhaps some street dance, perhaps even a cheeky breakdancing routine.

In my own pursuit of spreading the gospel of the pink tutu, I’ve noticed how even the most fashion-conscious ladies seem captivated by its frills and tulle. In a city of individuality and expression, there’s a universal appeal in this whimsical garment. It speaks to the playful side within us all, to the girl who once dreamed of twirling around her living room and perhaps it inspires a tiny bit of childish delight, too!

So, until next week, stay sweet and keep twirling! And do make sure to join me over at www.pink-tutu.com, and maybe, just maybe, try a twirl in your very own pink tutu this week. You never know who you might inspire.

Love and sparkles, Emma
