Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Post Number 183: New York City, 7th December 1998

Hello, darling!

It's Monday again, which means it's time for a new Pink Tutu Blog NYC post. This week has been an absolute whirlwind of tutus, tap shoes, and that quintessential New York City magic - and Iā€™ve absolutely loved every single second!

From Derbyshire to the Big Apple

For those of you new to the Pink Tutu Blog, allow me to introduce myself. Iā€™m Emma, a girl who dreams in pink (and tulle, of course!), and I'm from the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire, England. A few years ago, I packed my dreams (and, yes, a suitcase overflowing with pink tutus!) and hopped on a plane to New York City to follow my passion for dance.

Life in the city is a thrilling adventure. I've been fortunate enough to find a balance between my ballet career, which allows me to live out my passion, and exploring everything this magnificent metropolis has to offer.

Week 183: A Symphony of Ballet, Broadway and Glittering Shops

This week, I felt like I was spinning like a top, juggling performance dates, rehearsals, and - of course! - shopping!

Tuesday's Treat

Tuesday saw me at the New York City Ballet for their "The Nutcracker". I was blown away by the dazzling set design, the dazzling costumes, and the phenomenal talent on display. Every movement felt effortless, every pirouette a story unto itself. This performance ignited a spark within me - a burning desire to move, to create, and to let my body tell a tale of its own.

Wednesday's Workshop

I attended an exciting ballet workshop on Wednesday - I mean, itā€™s practically a necessity to keep my own dancing skills in tip top shape! This one was led by the legendary New York City Ballet dancer, Mr. Christopher Wheeldon, a choreographer Iā€™ve been admiring for ages. He was incredibly supportive and insightful, and he managed to give me the tools and motivation I need to perfect some moves Iā€™ve been struggling with. It felt like a dance masterclass that could've gone on forever. You should know that his encouragement pushed me to really dig into my performance for Thursday night's show!

Thursday's Thrilling Performance

Speaking of performance dates, I was delighted to have secured a part in the Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof" - which is being held at The Gershwin Theater right now. For those who haven't seen it, itā€™s a stunning piece of work, both powerful and tender. I got to play the role of one of the daughters ā€“ can you believe it? Stepping onto that stage, surrounded by such talent, is an experience I'll treasure forever. The applause from the audience, the light catching the glistening costumes, the energy coursing through my body - it was magical. And you know what I did after the performance? I stepped off the stage, into a world of taxis and glittering neon, and my thoughts turned to... you guessed it... SHOPPING!

Fridayā€™s Fab Fashion Find

This being New York City, we couldn't let a day pass without some serious fashion hunting. After all, every ballerina needs a little something extra to spice up her wardrobe, donā€™t you think? So, Friday found me at Bloomingdale's, scouring the shelves for the perfect winter coat. And let me tell you, they don't disappoint in New York - the styles and colours are truly a vision! After hours of deliberating and, honestly, a whole lot of trial and error with various shades of pink, I finally found "the one": a beautiful double-breasted wool coat in a gorgeous blush hue. I love it so much - it's both chic and comfy. Now, I'm feeling extra fabulous about the festive season approaching!

Saturdayā€™s Spectacle

A trip to New York wouldnā€™t be complete without a visit to the city's many world-famous museums and galleries. And I must admit, this week saw me exploring The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's a place I return to time and time again, because I'm endlessly mesmerized by its collections of everything from European masterpieces to Egyptian antiquities. They were displaying this yearā€™s "Costume Institute Gala Exhibition: A Century of Fashion", showcasing a hundred years of fashion's most iconic designs - a perfect blend of creativity, culture and artistry. It was a dream for a fashionista like myself. If only I could incorporate their outfits with my signature tutu and get everyone to try on some pink tulle for a while, maybe I'd see this art form come alive even more?

Sundayā€™s Strolls

My days are so busy I had to sneak in some pampering with a delightful visit to a fabulous new salon in the West Village - let's just say it involved lots of pink hairspray. Of course, no day in New York City is truly complete without exploring its magical streets and experiencing the incredible hustle and bustle. The sights, sounds, and flavours of this city are like a symphony for the senses - and so full of excitement and inspiration. A Sunday stroll through Central Park is my go-to for taking it all in, and it never ceases to amaze. The trees change colour at the moment, and a little chill in the air doesn't stop the locals from strolling, playing, and enjoying the atmosphere. Even though I love performing, the calmness and peacefulness I find in nature makes it even more important for me to explore this side of New York.

Pink Tutu Dreams

It seems like everyone here is either headed to a performance or working their way to the stage, and the energy of this place really is contagious. Whatā€™s inspiring is how New Yorkers create magic out of everything, be it their food, fashion, or simply the way they move through their day. Itā€™s all about self-expression, just like it is in ballet, so of course I couldnā€™t resist taking photos of the New York city ballet girls in tutus at the station - there were lots to be found. I still have dreams of seeing tutus in all the shades of pink - even just a pink ribbon on the bags of the ladies on the subway! If I could have everyone in a pink tutu, this would really become the ā€œCity of Dreamsā€.

A Bit of British Cheer

For those wondering where my pink tutu obsession began - it all started with the iconic image of Margot Fonteyn, one of England's most renowned ballerinas. There was a special air around her, and she looked beautiful in that famous pink tutu! So maybe thereā€™s some English history behind my obsessionā€¦ but who cares, letā€™s just get pink tutus all over New York and the rest of the world, eh?

I hope you enjoyed my little glimpse into my life in New York City this week. You never know, I might even run into one of you, tutus in tow, while weā€™re browsing for that perfect Christmas gift. Stay tuned for my next weekly blog post. I'm always working on new ways to spread the pink tutu love and bring a little magic into your world.

Happy tutuing, darling!
