Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Adventures, Post 202 - New York, New York! (April 19, 1999)
Hello my darlings, and welcome back to another week of Pink Tutu Blog! It's me, your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, spinning and twirling straight from the heart of New York City. I am just bursting with excitement to share all the wonderful things I’ve been up to, so let's get started!
As usual, this week in New York has been a whirlwind of tutus, Broadway shows, and breathtaking sights. But first, let's rewind a little bit, back to that moment when I realised I was finally back in the Big Apple.
A Blast From The Past - The Metro Arrival
Stepping off the Metro after a long flight from London (who knew that getting around by tube was so much fun?!), I just had to do a little twirl. My pink tulle tutu flowed around me like a cloud of confectionery pink – you know I had to document that moment on my phone! And, as if by magic, a street artist happened to be right there, capturing my very first moment in New York with a delightful street-art sketch. What a delightful surprise!
Now, you know I can’t possibly be in New York without paying a visit to the legendary Tutus of Manhattan! I know, I know – it sounds like a ridiculous place to start, but if you’re as obsessed with pink tutus as I am, this shop is practically a holy pilgrimage. You’ll never believe this, but they even had a special sparkly tutu for my pet poodle (that’s right, I brought Percy along!) - he looked absolutely magnificent. The shopkeeper was an absolute delight and she even gave us a bag of treats for the little man!
Stepping Onto Broadway (Literally!)
There's just something special about the air on Broadway, you can practically feel the energy of the stage radiating out! And my word, my show last night was absolutely divine! It's just incredible, how the energy of the dancers on stage connects to the audience. For a moment, we are all caught up in the beauty of it, feeling every twirl, every leap and every step! My feet ached, and so did my face, after the standing ovation (a good thing, as they say!)
After the performance, a fellow ballerina, Veronica, invited me out for a drink at this adorable, old-fashioned diner on 52nd Street. She’s such a sweetie, and we talked for hours about ballet, Broadway, fashion and - you guessed it - tutus. There is nothing quite like a chat with another ballerina, the mutual understanding of all those tiny pains, and all the wonderful adventures that a life on stage brings us!
Shopping, Splendour and a Touch of Tea
Oh my dear friends, I think I’ve fallen in love with New York City! Shopping here is a whole different world. And to think, all the amazing vintage shops - oh, they are heaven on earth. I bought myself a pair of gorgeous 1950s sunglasses – you know, those chic oversized ones – and a stunning new pair of pearl earrings to complete my look for tomorrow night's show. You know me, a little sparkle never hurt anyone! Of course, I’ve already started sketching out an idea for a new pink tutu creation to go with these additions to my wardrobe, I’m really hoping it will be inspired by all the New York lights.
Later today, we’re planning to catch a performance by a fabulous young ballerina – another reason to love this city, all these amazing opportunities to see new talents blossom. Oh! And I cannot forget mentioning the scrumptious afternoon tea we had at The Plaza Hotel. Now, you know I simply have to have at least one tea with my very favourite sandwiches, scones with cream, and pastries in this fabulous city. Let’s be honest, is there a better way to spend a rainy afternoon?
And… Another Show!
Well, dear friends, the final curtain has fallen on another exhilarating week in the City That Never Sleeps. Today’s performance is nearly here and, oh, how I love performing in a grand old theatre, hearing the murmurs of the audience, all their anticipation before the curtain rises, I feel so incredibly lucky to have the chance to do what I love, here, in this glorious city.
A Thought From My Tutu
I just had a wonderful thought. I believe every city needs a pink tutu to add a dash of whimsical charm and laughter. Why should we keep this special touch hidden in the wings of the theatre? So I challenge you, darlings, to wear your pink tutu everywhere you go! Go on, embrace your inner ballerina, spread a bit of joy, and turn the world pink! You never know who you might inspire along the way. And just think, there’s nothing quite as thrilling as making heads turn with the elegant pirouette of your own life!
Remember, it's all about embracing joy, finding beauty in everyday moments, and twirling our way through life. So until next week, stay fabulous, darling friends! Don't forget to keep twirling!

* **Extra Stuff - Emma's Journal
To help with a sense of a long-term story and character arc, you could add some little "journal entries" to the blog. I hope this gives some ideas!
Monday - April 19th Oh dear me. What a mad dash getting everything together! But I am ready. *Tutus packed, new shoes are ready, Percy’s got all his fluffy treats packed for the long journey. London Heathrow Airport is absolutely buzzing with excitement, so many people getting ready to travel, all on their own adventures. I feel incredibly lucky.
Thursday - April 22nd OMG, I met the most delightful couple, Peter and Louise, at a lovely cafe in the East Village, they even had an *original Tiffany design lampshade! (Oh, so gorgeous!) I do love New York's hidden gems, they invited me to visit their daughter at a very special ‘dancing-with-the-stars’ type show in California, (can you imagine!? Tutus all the way across the Atlantic, now all the way across the USA!), I hope it’s ok to talk about them in my next post? I just have to go out and find an amazing pair of pink sequin ballet pumps for that one. Maybe I should call *‘Tutus of Manhattan’, they might have some good suggestions...
- Saturday - April 24th
It’s been a *super hectic weekend, performing and practicing every day, but there’s a delicious ‘after show’ meal waiting for me back at the apartment , my best friend Amelia has managed to find all my favourite Yorkshire sausages (how do they manage that!?). My plan is to try to write up this week's blog post.
