Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #314 - New York, New York!

Monday, 11th June 2001

Good morning, darlings! It’s Monday again, which means it’s time for a brand new Pink Tutu Blog NYC! How was your week? Did you wear pink? Did you twirl? I’m hoping you did, because I definitely did!

This week I'm in the Big Apple! Yes, that New York City! As you know, I’ve always wanted to come to this dazzling metropolis, the city that never sleeps and where dreams are made (and, dare I say it, where tutus are worn – but we’ll get to that later).

This is actually the last stop on my tour before I head back to the UK, so I'm determined to pack in as much excitement as possible! This week has been an absolute whirlwind!

Friday Night Fever

So, my New York adventure started last Friday. As soon as I arrived at JFK Airport (which, by the way, was surprisingly quiet – I always thought American airports were chaos! But I must admit, I did feel a slight sense of glamour arriving at this world-famous airport in my trusty pink tutu – wouldn’t you agree?), I jumped straight onto the metro. The MTA is a bit different to our tube here in England. It’s certainly busier, but I’ve found the people here are much more laid back. The sheer energy of this city, its non-stop hustle, is exhilarating, although a bit tiring at times.

My first evening in the city, I found myself captivated by the breathtaking beauty of the iconic Empire State Building. Seeing this giant skyscraper lit up in the dusk was truly a sight to behold! Of course, I wore my brightest pink tutu – I was even mistaken for a local theatre performer a few times! Perhaps, in the near future, they will incorporate a pink tutu in the next Broadway musical, maybe a futuristic musical. Pink Power. I wonder…

Saturday Night Shopping Spree

On Saturday, I spent the entire day navigating the shopping streets. You could say I was shopping until I dropped (and then I found a new shop to drop in again). I swear, it's a miracle I wasn’t a total shopaholic back in England; this city really is heaven for someone like me who loves a good bargain and unique clothes! And let’s not forget the fabulous shoes – those New Yorkers know how to design shoes, I can tell you! And, well, there are just SO many shoes, it’s enough to drive a girl crazy. The sheer variety is astonishing, with high heels, ballet flats, sandals and boots in every colour imaginable – the whole rainbow of colours you can think of, and then some! It’s truly inspiring. Oh, I must share this one secret tip! If you want to find some truly special finds (especially with regards to clothes), the Lower East Side area has hidden gems. And what’s even more surprising is that you can bargain a really good price here too! It’s amazing how those locals have found this unique mix of fashion treasures hidden in a bustling, modern city.

Later that evening, I treated myself to a gorgeous lobster roll with an extravagant strawberry milkshake at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, and to my delight, I found that most of the waiters were actually actors, dancers, singers, or musicians! One even joined me in a little dance to the 80s pop music! Now, if that’s not my kind of party, I don’t know what is! I was the pink flamingo amongst a crowd of flamingos – it was utterly joyful! You’ve got to love those bright, shiny New York dreams, don’t you?

Sunday Brunch Delight

Now, Sundays are the real treat – a delicious brunch! And boy, were we in for a real treat this time. After an enjoyable morning wandering around the vibrant Central Park – who wouldn’t be delighted by the endless greenery, open air and the beautiful views, right? I found a cute spot on a bench next to a playful poodle to practice my ballet barre workout – yes, a bench in the park makes an excellent impromptu barre – don’t underestimate those park benches, you never know when they’ll become your temporary barre station!

Later that evening, we were lucky enough to snag tickets to see “The Phantom of the Opera" in its beautiful original stage setting at The Majestic Theatre – what an experience! The theatre has this amazing atmosphere, the grand chandeliers, the old-world feel – and, to top it off, this incredible performance with superb music, spectacular costume design, a dramatic story and such beautiful, emotive singing – my inner child was squealing with joy! It really felt like I’d been transported back to the era when it first debuted on stage! It was a proper ‘night at the theatre’ moment – with enough sparkles to light up Times Square! It left me thinking – “Will Broadway become a haven for pink tutus someday, or maybe, even better, they will feature them in every play?” Imagine a pink ‘Phantom of the Opera!’

Monday’s Muse

And now, we are here! It’s Monday again! This morning I treated myself to a delightful cuppa with scones, jam and clotted cream from the adorable British tea shop in Brooklyn. A little bit of home right here in the bustling city of New York!

Of course, there’s nothing quite like seeing New York on foot. Even the walk from my Airbnb to this cafe gave me a sense of exploration, a true feeling of discovery. That’s the thing about this city – you can always find a new place to explore, and it never stops giving you that buzz of excitement!

Today’s goal? Exploring Central Park, enjoying the sunshine and spotting any famous faces (it seems they really do just wander around here)! But before I do, I must tell you about this amazing shop called Pink Flamingo Boutique. They are just the coolest little vintage store! Filled to the brim with designer pieces and classic, retro looks – and – brace yourselves, girls, pink galore! We’re talking about everything from blush pink dresses, raspberry pink scarves, strawberry pink bags, pale pink sunglasses, pastel pink hats… they have everything a girly-girl could dream of. My only regret was that I didn’t have enough money to buy everything they had on offer – just divine!

Oh, but there’s something else – did I mention they have pink tutus? And not just one type – all shapes, all sizes, with sparkles, with flowers… you name it. Pink tutus galore! You really should take a trip down there if you’re in the city. I can just picture my blog followers with a little Pink Tutu Blog NYC shopping experience under their belt. I’m feeling rather inspired for a pink tutu fashion spread later!

I think you know, darlings, I was in pink tutu paradise! And of course, I couldn’t leave without taking a pink tutu (or three!) with me to wear later this evening for another adventure in this fantastic city! What’s more fun than taking a tour of Broadway and experiencing New York by night in a pink tutu, I ask you? I was ready for a bit of Pink Power at Times Square! The place truly is full of light, energy and amazing billboards – a modern wonderland that never sleeps, all ready for some sparkly pink tutus! And that’s exactly what happened, darlings! We even got a picture with an American cowboy. It was absolutely incredible!

And you know what, I think I just might be starting a trend – I spotted several people rocking the pink tutu while exploring New York, so you see, it really can be done. It is an exciting development for our beloved pink tutu movement – New York has a sense of openness and style that embraces all kinds of expressions, so it's exciting to see it slowly creeping into the city! I might even give those local cowboys a pink tutu lesson next time – a new chapter for a little pink flamingo ballerina in New York City!

It's Not Always About the Ballet

You know, a lot of people think this whole Pink Tutu blog thing is just a fun fashion adventure – it certainly is fun! – but for me, it’s more than just clothes. I’m hoping to encourage others to wear a pink tutu with the same enthusiasm and energy that they wear their everyday clothes. And that means, for me, expressing confidence and letting those feminine feels bloom! Yes, that's right – those feminine feelings! In our fast-paced modern world, it seems so important to hold onto a little bit of playful femininity. A little bit of sparkle. A little bit of flair! Let's be bold! Let's twirl! And let's enjoy every minute of it! And what better way to do it than wearing a beautiful, pink tutu?!

That’s it for this week’s blog post. Thank you for joining me for my Pink Tutu adventure! And, as always, don't forget to share your pink tutu experiences with me on Instagram! Next week I’ll be back home in Derbyshire! Oh, I can't wait to catch up with all of my ballet classmates. Until then, twirl and be pink!
