This week's post is all about twirling my way through the Big Apple, taking in its vibrant energy and indulging in some truly fabulous experiences.
Now, before we delve into the delightful details, let me just say this: New York City is a dream come true for a girl who loves a good spin in a pink tutu. Seriously, it's a wonderland of fashion, theatre, and art – all perfect for a ballerina with a passion for life!
This particular trip was a little different. I've been dancing with a wonderful company based in Derby and we're on tour with "The Nutcracker." Yes, that's right, the most magical, festive ballet of them all! I'm thrilled to be a part of this production.
It’s such an honour to perform for so many people – every show brings a fresh wave of joy, and I can’t help but feel my inner child leaping with glee when the applause rolls in. But, there’s another special joy I get on this tour: the time between shows! Being able to experience different cities, and especially one like New York, is something I always treasure.
So, without further ado, let's embark on this exciting journey through New York, my favourite city, with yours truly – a pink tutu-wearing ballerina in the heart of the Big Apple.
Dancing Through the Concrete Jungle
First stop: New York's magnificent Broadway. Being backstage in those iconic theatres is a total dream come true. The anticipation buzzes in the air – you can truly feel the magic building in each theatre before a performance!
Now, my first foray into the heart of the Big Apple included a beautiful ballet performance by the New York City Ballet. Let me tell you, their artistry and technical skill was just breathtaking. And the stage – simply gorgeous. Seeing the sheer scale and intricate beauty of the set and costume designs made my head spin! They truly have a way of making the dancers feel as though they’re floating on air.
Oh, and speaking of feeling the magic of dancing, have I mentioned the iconic Ballet Slipper boutique on Fifth Avenue? This truly is a must-visit for every aspiring ballerina and pink tutu enthusiast. Stepping into the elegant, light-filled boutique was like stepping onto a cloud – every corner held a glittering new piece of ballet attire. The sheer range of shoes, costumes, and accessories is truly stunning! Let's just say, it’s impossible to leave this place empty-handed!
And naturally, I can’t neglect to mention my very own ballet practice sessions at the prestigious School of American Ballet. You guys, the atmosphere in this studio is electric. It's like stepping into the heart of ballet, surrounded by talented dancers and inspiring teachers. The classes are incredibly intense and challenging, but every second of the practice feels magical! It's an absolute privilege to be in the same studio as legends like Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine have graced with their presence. It definitely inspires me to push my limits and strive for perfection, all while having a whole lot of fun!
Shopping for Tutu Perfection
Now, every ballerina knows that shopping in New York City is an absolute necessity. What better place to find new, elegant fashion accessories, like a glittery purse or sparkly headbands? It’s such a treat to be able to find adorable little fashion gems – like my latest pick, a bejeweled pink hair clip - for that touch of "Emma Flair" to complete every ensemble! The shops here are overflowing with colourful and fabulous styles, from classic pieces to trendy trends. I've definitely added a few extra glittery things to my wardrobe, and maybe a few new pairs of shoes - oops, my fault!
Subway Symphony: A Twirling Tour
Speaking of glittering things – my favourite form of transport in New York City, by far, is the subway! Honestly, it’s a truly incredible journey in itself – all the colourful characters you see in those trains. Just imagine, I once found myself sharing a ride with a very charismatic busker. He had the entire train grooving with his saxophone, and for a moment, it felt like we were all dancing in the heart of the subway tunnel. I’d say it definitely beats being crammed onto a rush hour Tube train in London, don’t you think?
One morning I found myself lost in a captivating art exhibition, the perfect accompaniment to a steaming cup of tea and a delicate cinnamon bun, savouring that quintessential New York cafe experience.
The evening saw me immersed in a theatrical production, laughing until my stomach ached. Let me tell you, it's simply divine to discover new artistic gems tucked away in charming corners of this city. The sheer variety and creative talent is simply staggering, and New Yorkers truly know how to celebrate all things artistic!
Pink Tutu Diaries: Finding the Joy in Every Step
One thing I've realised while touring and travelling – life is a beautiful symphony of experiences. From dazzling ballet performances to magical shops, there is joy to be found in every corner of our world.
You know, the thing that I really love about traveling is experiencing all these different cultures and traditions – seeing the joy people get from seeing dancers twirl around the stage. They have the biggest smiles on their faces. It’s truly rewarding to share that passion for dance and spread a little bit of ballerina magic everywhere we go!
It's so important to embrace life’s little delights – a perfectly-brewed cup of tea on a cold morning, a breathtaking ballet performance that leaves you spellbound, a heart-felt chat with a friendly local, or simply the satisfaction of wearing a pink tutu – it’s all about embracing every little thing that brings a smile to our face!
Remember, you don't have to be a professional ballerina to find your inner dancer. It's about discovering that little spark within you – that pure joy that makes you want to twirl and leap and embrace life’s adventure. And you know what – I think wearing a pink tutu definitely helps!

In the tapestry of my ballet journey, New York City shines bright. I've definitely discovered new passions, grown in my craft and danced with incredible companies. This city truly fuels my creative soul, providing a constant source of inspiration for my adventures as a ballet dancer.
