#PinkTutuBlogNYC - Monday 5th February 2007 - Post 609 - Tutuing Through The City That Never Sleeps!

Hello, darlings! Welcome back to the world of Pink Tutu BlogNYC! It's Emma here, your resident ballerina blogger, ready to take you on a whirl through my week in the most fabulous city on earth - New York, New York!

Oh, I can't begin to describe the excitement coursing through me today, as I sit here at my laptop, surrounded by the bustling energy of Times Square. I can practically smell the popcorn and feel the vibrations of the giant billboards flashing around me. It's truly a sensory overload, but in the best way possible!

This week has been a dream, full of exciting adventures and fabulous experiences. I’m finding my footing in the Big Apple, navigating its incredible subways with the same grace and precision as a well-rehearsed pirouette (almost! My apologies to the lovely gentleman I bumped into at the station – hopefully he appreciated the delightful shade of my pink tutu!)

I landed in the city on Thursday, after a breathtaking (and slightly stressful) flight from London. Stepping onto that Manhattan sidewalk, a blast of chilly air hit me like a crescendo in a Tchaikovsky symphony! My trusty pink suitcase and I took a taxi directly to the cutest little hotel in Greenwich Village.

Now, I don’t mean to brag (okay, maybe just a little!) but I do love a good bargain, and I snagged a fantastic room at the “Pink Flamingo Inn,” – a charming, retro-style haven where everything’s… well… pink! It’s so delightfully on-theme. My pink tutu feels right at home.

Once settled, my first mission was to find my feet in this vibrant metropolis. Now, as you know, I adore the iconic New York City subway! It’s like a glamorous, underground ballet of its own, with people flowing in and out, all in their own intricate dance of commutes and destinations. I was smitten, my pink tutu swishing happily along.

It was a Wednesday night when I hit my first ballet class, and oh, how my heart soared! The New York Ballet Conservatory, with its elegant marble floors and echoing studio, felt like a cathedral to dance. It was truly divine. I joined a drop-in class, surrounded by passionate and talented dancers – I learned so much!

After class, I was absolutely ravenous, so I took a little detour to this incredible French cafe called “Chez Josephine”. Imagine, tiny bistro tables tucked away in the quaintest nook, where the air smelled of croissants and freshly brewed coffee. I felt so Parisian, I almost expected a charming beret-clad artist to waltz past, humming a melody from "La Vie en Rose."

And on that note, let’s talk fashion, darlings! I haven’t just been indulging in all things dance. New York, it seems, is a treasure trove of stylish delights. Fifth Avenue became my playground, filled with department stores bursting with dazzling fabrics and elaborate window displays. I felt like Cinderella wandering into the most beautiful ball, just begging me to join its celebration. I found this exquisite vintage store on the Lower East Side, with the most magnificent antique hats – they would make the perfect finishing touch for any of my ballet-inspired outfits. It’s almost criminal how stunning these feathered fascinators are!

But it’s not all fashion and champagne, though those things are incredibly important, darlings! (Don’t you agree?) I found myself deeply moved by the sheer creativity and talent on display throughout New York’s diverse cultural scene. On Saturday, I went to this little theatre off Broadway, hidden down a quiet street in the West Village. A truly hidden gem! It was the most unique play I have ever seen – a mixture of surrealism and mime with a dash of cabaret thrown in for good measure. My pink tutu practically pirouetted on its own at the finale!

On Sunday, a beautiful Sunday, I found myself enjoying a leisurely stroll through Central Park. It’s so incredibly picturesque, and so peaceful despite being in the heart of the city. I saw families picnicking on blankets, couples walking hand-in-hand, and squirrels chattering in the trees. It was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle, and it allowed me to appreciate the quieter beauty of this fantastic city. I could feel my ballerina soul soaring among the lush foliage and whispering winds.

The highlight of the week was, of course, seeing the world-renowned New York City Ballet perform on Sunday evening at Lincoln Center. I was enthralled by their flawless technique and powerful interpretations, each move a work of art. It reminded me why I love dance so much – the sheer magic of expression, the captivating grace, and the emotional depth of each performance.

I am completely enchanted with New York City. This vibrant, dynamic city feels like an extended stage where dreams can be danced into reality. It has been a week filled with stunning performances, incredible shopping experiences, and breathtaking views. This city truly ignites my imagination and has fueled my passion for dance, even more!

You know what they say, darling: “if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.”

And remember, I believe that even in this fast-paced concrete jungle, there’s a touch of ballerina magic to be found in every corner! So, keep that pink tutu twirling, embrace your inner dancer, and stay tuned for next week's post.

Until then, keep sparkling, lovelies!
