Pink Tutu Blog: New York City - Monday, February 12th, 2007 (Post #610)

Hey everyone,

It's Monday morning and I'm writing this post straight from my favourite spot in New York City - the cosy cafe tucked away just around the corner from my apartment in Greenwich Village. It's been a whirlwind weekend here in the Big Apple and, like a sugar-spun confection, it's just what I needed.

Now, you'll be shocked to learn (or maybe you won't, you've been following this blog for long enough, haven't you?) that this past weekend I found myself mesmerised by another captivating performance of The Nutcracker. Yes, it was pure magic. It felt like I was twirling alongside the snowflakes, the sugar plum fairies, and even the dancing rats! Just picturing that image now has a warm fuzzy feeling blooming in my chest, don't you agree?

Speaking of feeling like a fairy, let's get back to the important stuff - my outfits! You already know my passion for pink tutus and I couldn't have missed this opportunity to celebrate my love for them in New York City. After all, pink tutus are so effortlessly versatile. Think about it - they go with everything! From chunky knit cardies to sequin dresses, from high heels to ballerina pumps. They're a true embodiment of girly chic, if ever there was one.

But let's talk details, darlings!

My weekend wardrobe in New York

For my Nutcracker extravaganza, I went for the full "sugarplum fairy" look - think pale pink tutu layered over a blush-coloured silk slip dress with a dazzling sequin-covered cardigan draped over my shoulders for warmth.

On Friday, after arriving in the city and settling into my charming little apartment, I took a leisurely stroll down Fifth Avenue, my favourite spot for window shopping. Oh, the shops on Fifth Avenue, you guys! From Tiffany's to Saks Fifth Avenue, they really do have everything! And you can't beat the bright lights, the bustle, and that sheer feeling of excitement you get in the air. That evening, I decided to opt for something a bit more casual. You know, something comfortable for exploring the city, for hitting up the street food stalls and, of course, the local dance studios. So I threw on a fluffy pink cardigan over a little white t-shirt with a whimsical pink tulle skirt, accessorized with my trusty trusty bright pink ballerinas.

Saturday afternoon, however, called for something special. I planned a romantic afternoon tea in Central Park. So naturally, I slipped into a soft pink maxi-dress with floral details and a flowing tutu underneath, adorned with an exquisite vintage rose-gold necklace. A truly stunning moment. Just picture me strolling across the bridge with the cityscape behind me - the perfect scene!

Then, after a whirlwind of exploring trendy shops and art galleries (I found some incredible art at the Chelsea galleries!), I headed back to my little flat. A lovely walk, especially after the sun went down. The sky transformed into a tapestry of oranges and blues, casting a dreamy glow over everything. Honestly, New York at sunset is just... pure magic! And of course, for my evening outing to a delicious dinner in Soho, I kept it chic with a soft pink dress with delicate lace detail, and added some pizzazz with a bright pink handbag that added a touch of extra zing to my ensemble.

And of course, on Sunday, it was all about that legendary New York brunch scene! Think steaming cups of coffee, bottomless mimosas, and eggs Benedict. To add to the dreamy vibe, I wore a pastel pink lace top with my tutu layered over light wash skinny jeans, and bright pink suede flats - perfect for a bit of shopping after the deliciousness that is a proper New York brunch!

Honestly, New York is just... amazing! The vibe, the energy, the people, the shops, the food. I feel at home here. The city's full of creative and interesting people from every corner of the world and it's constantly evolving and offering new experiences, new thrills and even new ways to express yourself through fashion. I'm always inspired by the amazing diversity, energy and the endless possibilities it throws my way!

Did you see the show?

So I was excited to be seeing another performance of The Nutcracker. I was thrilled to see this ballet performed in the Grand Central Terminal (that's right, the famous New York Grand Central!), in an absolutely jaw-dropping performance set amidst the beautiful Art Deco architecture. It was such a special treat, something you wouldn't see anywhere else!

Back to basics:

Oh, and speaking of basics, my daily necessities have been quite streamlined here in New York! Since it's still quite cold, it's been mostly about leggings, long-sleeved t-shirts, oversized sweaters, and my favourite fluffy cardigans. However, no matter what the weather throws my way, the one constant is always my pink tutu!

My Pink Tutu Tip of the Day

This week's tip is to experiment with different styles of tutus! This Sunday, I found this wonderful store on Bleecker Street (it's just the sort of hidden gem that makes New York so wonderful), selling all sorts of incredible tutus - fluffy, vintage, and even ones with iridescent sequins. So whether you go for full-bodied poofy tulle or the softer romantic lace, just remember to pick one that truly embodies your inner fairy, princess or ballerina!

Oh, and by the way…

Have you noticed? New Yorkers are absolutely embracing the "Pink Tutu Power" (as I like to call it). They're letting their pink tutu flags fly! On the subway, walking down Fifth Avenue, in coffee shops, everywhere! And to celebrate the magic, I picked up the cutest pink tutus at this boutique in SoHo. (It was hard to pick just one, but trust me - you can never have too many tutus!)

But let's get back to that dance show…

I have to say, there’s something truly spectacular about seeing The Nutcracker performed amidst the beautiful, bustling energy of Grand Central Station. The setting, the costumes, the lighting, the whole atmosphere... it’s absolutely breathtaking. You can almost feel the story unfolding.

And speaking of story, the Nutcracker is one of the most famous ballets for good reason. I mean, have you heard the music?! The Tchaikovsky is exquisite, full of excitement and grandeur and tenderness. And the costumes – they’re simply delightful. From the Sugarplum Fairy's sugary pink gown to the Snow Queen's flowing, shimmering cape, you're transported to another world. And that little girl who plays Clara – her passion and her innocence on the stage were so captivating! It truly brought the story alive!

The show is, of course, based on the magical story by E.T.A. Hoffmann. I absolutely adore reading the book. If you've never experienced it before, I urge you to pick it up. The beautiful, fantastical journey of Clara, her enchanted Christmas Nutcracker, and the magic of the Land of Sweets – it’s captivating and oh so romantic!

Oh, how I love this city

Oh, how I love New York! This place is a dream. The energy here is contagious, and every corner, every street corner seems to burst with stories, with vibrant characters, with an incredible symphony of sights and sounds.

I feel incredibly blessed to be exploring this amazing city - I'm really enjoying immersing myself in its unique spirit, trying all the fantastic foods (and finding amazing fashion bargains!) while always, of course, being a proud pink tutu ambassador.

That’s all for this week, folks! Catch me next Monday for my latest adventures here in NYC! And remember, wear a pink tutu – you won’t regret it!

Until next time!

Love, Emma

P.S. Did you know that this year is the 75th Anniversary of the The Nutcracker? That's a truly magical milestone! Let's celebrate with even more pink tutus! Let me know what you’ve been up to. And of course, share any pink tutu moments or stories that come to mind!
