Pink Tutu Blog: NYC - Post 648 - Monday 5th November 2007

Hello darlings! It's Monday again, which means it's time for another peek into the magical world of yours truly, Emma, and my pink tutu adventures. This week I'm writing from the dazzling metropolis of New York City! Yes, you heard that right, New York City! This pink tutu-clad ballerina has finally touched down in the Big Apple and let me tell you, it's everything I ever dreamed it would be and more.

Oh, where do I even begin? This city is just a whirlwind of colour, energy, and excitement! From the moment I stepped off the plane, the air crackled with that unmistakable New York energy – you can literally feel it coursing through your veins.

And my adventures started almost immediately! As I made my way from JFK Airport to my little pink paradise in Manhattan (a lovely boutique hotel with a seriously impressive chandelier!), I noticed something…everyone was staring! It's not like they weren't used to seeing tutus in London, but in New York, the heads turned like I'd sprouted wings and a halo. Now, you know me, I just love a little attention, so I happily swished and twirled my way down the streets, practically bouncing on my toes, making sure the lovely people of NYC had a chance to admire my pink tulle goodness.

Speaking of my tutu, it's my trusty "NYC Dream" tutu, you see – a lovely soft, pale pink with delicate diamante detailing. I paired it with my favourite white fitted blouse, a vintage Chanel cardigan I found in a little shop tucked away on Bond Street, and a pair of simple, yet stylish pink ballet pumps. Let’s be honest, a ballerina can never go wrong with a pair of good ballet pumps! It's classic Emma style, with just a touch of NYC chic, wouldn't you agree?

The New York Subway, a Magical Journey

My journey from JFK to the city centre was surprisingly pleasant. I opted for the subway – something I always try to do in new cities, as I find the underground networks are truly fascinating – they offer such a window into the heart of a city. The NYC subway, however, surpassed my expectations! The noise, the bustle, the smells…it was utterly exhilarating. The station itself was adorned with these giant posters depicting the most impressive Broadway shows – I think I caught glimpses of Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and even Cats – oh, I love a good classic. I knew, even at that very moment, that my trip was going to be a theatrical feast.

Oh, I did say feast, didn't I? You wouldn't believe the yummy food they have here in New York! Last night I indulged in the most divine cheesecake - oh, my word, I couldn't resist. It was truly a slice of heaven! The next few days will see me devouring everything from the infamous New York pizza (a MUST for any visiting ballerina) to classic hotdogs and those incredible, oversized bagels they're so famous for. You can always count on me for a good culinary adventure, darlings!

Ballet, Shopping, and a Night at the Theatre

So, enough about me (for now)! What about what’s on the itinerary for this exciting New York adventure? Firstly, I have a date with destiny – or more specifically, a date with the Lincoln Center! On Tuesday, I’m off to see Swan Lake at the New York City Ballet. Swan Lake! One of my absolute favourite ballets – it's almost a religious experience! I’m giddy with excitement just thinking about it!

Then, on Wednesday, I have a fabulous ballet class booked at the renowned Steps on Broadway Dance Studio – you can imagine I am so excited! Just imagine me – a pink tutu-clad girl, surrounded by some of the world’s finest dancers in this beautiful, iconic studio. I will of course share all the exciting details and snippets of my experience with you next Monday.

And what's a trip to New York without some shopping therapy, darlings? You can count on me to scour the best stores, from the high-end boutiques on Fifth Avenue to the independent designers in the Lower East Side. I already have my eyes on a gorgeous emerald green dress by this fantastic vintage designer, Alice + Olivia – you know me, all about colour and vibrancy. And of course, a little splurge on a new pair of sparkly ballet shoes would be lovely!

But wait, there's more! On Friday night, I’m going to see a performance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. It’s a company known for their stunning performances and cutting-edge contemporary choreography – oh, I can’t wait to see it. And, oh my, the outfit for Friday’s performance is going to be something special! Think sleek black with pops of fuchsia pink, shimmering fabrics, and…yes, of course…a touch of tutu. It'll be a night of grace and elegance, ballet style!

Inspiration and The Magic of New York

Honestly, darlings, this trip to New York is about much more than just delicious food, amazing shows, and incredible fashion (though, let’s face it, those things are incredibly important!). This trip is a celebration of everything that inspires me, every little dream that twirls around in my heart – and it's a journey I know will shape the way I dance and design for years to come.

The energy in New York is infectious, a beautiful and bold mix of sophistication, creativity, and just plain raw, uninhibited life. There’s a spirit here that is both inspiring and intimidating, in a way, a feeling of never settling for less than your best.

But mostly, this trip is about pushing boundaries, dancing with the rhythm of the city, and embracing the freedom to just be, to let my creativity flow. It’s about bringing my personal touch – my signature pink, my love for ballet, and the undeniable allure of a tutu – into a place that pulsates with its own unique style and story. And that, darlings, is a story I’m excited to share with all of you, each step, twirl, and prance of the way.

So stay tuned next Monday for even more stories and pictures from this amazing trip. And until then, remember to always twirl your worries away and embrace the pink-tutu-loving life! See you next week, darlings!

Love, Emma
