Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Monday 17th March, 2008 - Post #667: New York City Ballet and Shopping Spree!
Oh, darling! Can you believe it's Monday already? This weekend in New York has just flown by. I'm back in my apartment, surrounded by mountains of bags and boxes (the perils of a shopping spree!), sipping on a latte and trying to work out where I've been.
As you know, dear readers, I always like to squeeze as much as possible into my New York visits. So, naturally, I had to make the most of the beautiful Saturday sunshine, and took advantage of the glorious weather to head to Lincoln Centre for the afternoon to watch the New York City Ballet.
It was quite a different experience to my regular Derbyshire ballet class - the sheer size of the theatre, the elaborate sets, and the fact that this was actually performance art as opposed to the standard practice of class was quite thrilling. I sat mesmerised, captivated by the stories told through movement and dance.
Ballet Bliss
The New York City Ballet company was wonderful, all so graceful, powerful, and captivating. The performance I saw was called "The Sleeping Beauty", which I'd always wanted to see. Itâs about Princess Aurora who pricked her finger on a spindle and was cursed by an evil fairy. Only a kiss from the true love would break the curse! As a young ballet dancer, I devoured those fairy tale stories - the beauty and magic were enthralling.
This version was even better than I'd imagined! The costumes, especially Aurora's gorgeous pink tutus (a few of them, I must add), were so extravagant. The choreography was captivating, and the whole production had me truly mesmerized.
After the performance, I managed to squeeze in a cheeky little photoshoot with the lovely New York City Ballet dancers outside the Lincoln Center. It felt utterly magical being on the street with such elegant people. The camera loves them, and my tutu, of course.
And speaking of tutu-love, I had to visit âTutu and the Ballerinaâ, the boutique on Broadway, New York. This fabulous shop is filled to the brim with dancewear and accessories - the perfect spot for any ballet enthusiast, tutu aficionado, and serious shoe-lover! It was hard to leave without another gorgeous pink tutu for my collection.
From Ballet to Brunch
The rest of Saturday was spent exploring. I treated myself to a lavish brunch in a super chic cafe (you should have seen the avocado toast!), followed by an afternoon spent window shopping, taking in the amazing views of New York City. I absolutely love the energy of this city!
Thereâs nothing quite like wandering the streets of Manhattan and simply soaking up the buzz, the noise, and the energy of the crowds, while occasionally getting lost in my favourite stores. You never know what treasures you're going to stumble upon. And that, my lovely readers, is part of the magic of New York!
An Evening Under the Stars
As evening descended, the city lights came on and the city glittered. I went to the Metropolitan Opera, where I took in the awe-inspiring grandeur and spectacular acoustics, the breathtaking, intricately-detailed décor of this opulent setting. This truly was the icing on the cake to a brilliant day, and I managed to get some really fab photos that night.
It was truly a whirlwind of fashion, dance, and sheer indulgence. But what else can you expect when you are living your best life in the city that never sleeps?
Fashion Funday
As a big believer that the journey is part of the experience, Sunday was a time for catching up on some sleep (after that big shopping day!) and spending a delightful day enjoying a good dose of classic New York fashion.
Sunday was spent roaming around "Bloomingdale's". What can I say? Bloomingdale's is one of my all-time favorite stores, a true beacon of retail therapy. From shoes to dresses to jewellery and all things pink (and tutu!), Bloomingdale's never fails to impress. And of course, you can't talk about Bloomingdale's without mentioning their infamous âShoe Floor.â It's every shopaholicâs dream come true. This multi-level wonderland boasts rows and rows of exquisite designer footwear - from timeless pumps to sparkly heels. Oh, and the glorious, sparkly shoes with feather detailing! I could spend all day browsing their selection and drool over the magnificent designer footwear!
But for me, the true treat at Bloomingdaleâs is their lingerie department! Such wonderful silky gowns and sexy corsets - and the dressing rooms are gorgeous! I think it's my favourite department store experience!
Of course, no shopping trip is complete without indulging in some serious caffeine and delicious cake, and a wonderful latte at âThe Little Cupcake Shopâ, and you guessed it⊠a sprinkle of pink sugar for that perfect extra touch!
And of course, you just cannot be in New York and NOT try a bagel, so I popped into âEss-a-Bagelâ, one of those famous, classic New York delis that are dotted throughout Manhattan. It had the most gorgeous window display with a mountain of giant bagels on show! You can really see why New York has fallen in love with this treat!
