Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Monday 2008-05-26 – A Pink Tutu Swirls in the City that Never Sleeps!

Post 677

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Blog NYC. This week, we're pirouetting straight into the heart of the Big Apple, where a certain pink-tutu clad ballerina has been making waves, quite literally.

As you know, my dear readers, I’m a girl from Derbyshire with a penchant for the flamboyant. A tutu in a shade of blushing rose, with all its swirling and twirling potential, has become my calling card – my statement piece – and quite possibly, the best travel companion a girl could ask for. And speaking of travel, this week I found myself back in my absolute favourite city in the whole wide world… New York, New York!

A Subway of Dreams

This city is truly alive. Its energy thrumming in every subway car, every honking cab, every cafe buzzing with chat and laughter. I swear, you can almost feel it in the air – a sense of possibility and excitement that's utterly intoxicating. This time, I arrived straight from a lovely run of performances in Boston – a whole weekend dedicated to my favourite art form! Nothing beats performing for an audience and their appreciative applause… especially after hours of rehearsals! It fuels my creative fire. But I’m a little ashamed to say I didn’t manage to fit in any extra time for a shopping spree, ahem, I mean, an "essential shopping trip" to replenish my pink-hued wardrobe. Whispers A ballerina needs her pink tutu supplies! But all is not lost because this week is jam-packed with pink-tutu-tastic adventures. I landed straight into the bustling Grand Central Station and was welcomed by the sheer spectacle of it all. The ornate architecture, the hurried commuters – a million tiny dramas playing out in every corner. This city never fails to amaze me!

A Waltz With the Met

As a true lover of the arts, my itinerary for the week had one very specific entry circled with pink highlighter… a trip to the Metropolitan Opera! I had always dreamt of experiencing this world-renowned venue, and this Monday was the night! Dressed in my most dazzling tutu, and my trusty pink clutch tucked under my arm (because a ballerina never travels without her essentials!), I eagerly boarded the subway – an ode to modern travel, my trusty friend. The atmosphere inside the Met was buzzing with anticipation. From the moment I walked in, it felt magical. Every inch of the building spoke of history, of beauty, and of stories yet to be told. The acoustics in the concert hall were just divine. I swear I felt the music vibrating through me, and I could see tears welling in the eyes of many a hardened critic, overwhelmed by the sheer force of the performers. We were treated to a rendition of “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi, an absolutely stunning performance of opera and ballet, leaving me breathless with sheer awe. It was such a beautifully crafted piece and each character's story came to life before me. The music swept me away on a tide of emotion, the dancers were effortlessly graceful, and every single note was perfection. Oh, darling! This wasn't just any ballet, this was a night in paradise.

New York Eats, a Fashionable Feast

Every ballerina needs to replenish her energy and fuel her artistry! After the captivating performance at the Met, my rumbling tummy urged a little stop off for a much needed dose of Parisian inspiration, I headed for a truly unique culinary experience! A small little cafe called the "The French Tart." Oh darling, how I loved every mouthful. The air was thick with the intoxicating scent of warm pastries, freshly baked baguettes, and oh my goodness, a giant profiterole in a glistening display case - calling my name! But before I succumbed to the temptation of too many sweets, I savored a delectable quiche with delicate spinach and creamy Gruyere, alongside a delicate salad dressed in a tangy vinaigrette. All this against a backdrop of elegant Parisian decor! It was like stepping into a whimsical storybook, just as enchanting and whimsical as a ballet performance itself! The owner, an absolutely delightful Frenchwoman named Marie, treated me to a lovely petit four. She seemed delighted with my pink tutu.

On a Roll with Rollerblades

New York isn't just about fancy theaters and gourmet tarts though. It's a city brimming with life, energy, and a touch of the unexpected! This afternoon I traded my trusty ballet slippers for a pair of bright pink rollerblades, yes darling, bright pink to match my tutu, of course! Taking to the streets of Central Park, I was quickly surrounded by families enjoying the sunny day and the joy of a rollerblading experience. Laughter filled the air as we zoomed past blooming flowerbeds and glistening lakes. For an afternoon, I felt like a little girl again, the city unfolding around me as I whizzed through its vibrant streets. And the bonus of being able to 'roll' in a city as lively as New York - absolute perfection! It's moments like these that I really understand the essence of this extraordinary city, it’s an exhilarating combination of history, art, fashion and the unexpected. Oh! Speaking of the unexpected...

Pink Tutu-tastic Shopping Spree

Now you're all thinking, "What happened to that pink wardrobe replenishing spree?" Darling, never fear. I did find time for a little fashion therapy at the very chic Bloomingdale's. Imagine my delight! They have an entire section dedicated to - you guessed it - pink! A rainbow of bubblegum hues, a soft sea of pastel shades, all in shimmering fabrics and intricate lace - my dream come true!

This department store truly is an Aladdin's Cave of couture treasures. I did get to try on a stunning pale pink tulle skirt, its texture soft as a cloud. And oh darling, you’ve simply GOT to see the incredible selection of tutus. I simply could not resist indulging in a gorgeous powder-pink ballet skirt – perfect for an impromptu whirl on Fifth Avenue. (Let’s face it, I almost always have a little twirl in my step, especially in my tutu, darling!)

And now, a secret just for you, my lovely readers: There’s this beautiful vintage shop near the park – I’m not sharing the exact location – you have to find it yourselves! This place is a treasure trove of unique dresses, vintage accessories and oh, I found a beautiful pair of lace gloves – a lovely little piece to match my new powder pink tutu. Oh, and the bonus was that it was on sale! Who wouldn't be happy with that?
