Pink Tutu Blog: New York City - Post #700 - Monday, 3rd November 2008

Hello, my darling dears! It's Emma here, writing to you live from the Big Apple! And what a week it has been. As always, I'm back with a brand new blog post, full of pink tutus, twirling adventures, and all things fabulous.

Now, this past week has been a whirlwind of excitement. I've been gallivanting about the city, taking in the sights, soaking up the atmosphere, and of course, twirling my little tutu heart out!

It's not just about the iconic sights, the towering buildings, the bustling streets, and the constant buzz. For me, the beauty of New York is the endless array of ballet opportunities!

Ballet Bliss: The Metropolitan Opera House

Speaking of ballet bliss, I'm buzzing about seeing "Swan Lake" at the Metropolitan Opera House! Oh my goodness, the sheer scale of this production is breathtaking! The stunning costumes, the sheer elegance of the dancers, and the masterful storytelling of the ballet really took my breath away.

You know I'm a big fan of all things pink, and the second act, when the ballerinas transformed into graceful white swans, made my heart skip a beat. But it's not just the main roles that deserve applause. The corps de ballet dancers, those talented women moving as one, were phenomenal! They radiated such energy and power on the stage - you can just tell they absolutely adore what they do. It's so inspiring to witness that level of dedication and artistry! I just knew I had to get a little picture with the statue outside the Opera House - I think it makes a splendid pink tutu background, don't you agree?

Street Style: Mixing Tutus and Taxis

This city's street style is phenomenal, a truly beautiful mish-mash of textures, colors, and vibes. It's a never-ending feast for the eyes. Of course, I was doing my best to represent my signature style: a healthy dose of pink tutus!

I love blending the classic elegance of ballet with a bit of edgy street flair. Think a sparkly pink tutu over a simple black turtleneck, paired with leather boots and a quirky beret – that's the magic formula right there! And to be completely honest, New York just begs you to be bold with your outfits. The city's vibrant energy encourages you to express yourself in a big, bold way! And who needs to blend in when you can twirl your way into people's hearts with a fabulous pink tutu?

I was particularly enthralled by the "Tutu-Taxi" incident, a spontaneous fashion adventure! You know how I am, a sucker for the unexpected, right?

It all happened while I was waltzing around Times Square. This adorable cabbie - with the brightest smile you've ever seen - stopped his car and shouted "Excuse me, Miss, I simply must compliment you on your delightful dress!". He was, of course, referring to my vibrant pink tutu! He said it reminded him of his little granddaughter's birthday dress and I'm pretty sure we both were grinning like Cheshire cats. You never know what magic might unfold when you embrace the unexpected in the Big Apple!

Retail Therapy: Finding My New Favourite Shop

Of course, no trip to New York is complete without a spot of retail therapy! This city's boutiques are a dream come true for any fashionista. But the true gem I found this week? A little independent boutique called "The Twirling Tiara," tucked away on a quaint street in Greenwich Village.

Now, let's just say I've been a little bit smitten. Think all things delicate, with the most fabulous vintage and handmade accessories! I was completely enchanted by their selection of hand-painted porcelain tiaras – and I managed to snag myself the prettiest lilac tiara for the next big ball I’ll be going to back in Derbyshire. The perfect match to a certain new tulle skirt I’m eyeing up! They also have the most gorgeous antique jewelry pieces and scarves, so delicate and ornate! And let's not forget the selection of beautifully crafted pink tutus. There are some absolutely spectacular creations amongst them – so unique and feminine!

You see, for me, fashion isn't just about clothes; it's about telling a story, embracing a feeling. Each outfit is an opportunity to express myself, to radiate confidence, and to inspire a little bit of magic. And, in this magical city, the possibilities are endless.

The Metro Adventures: Underground Fashion & Fickle Fairies

Speaking of inspiring magic, a magical moment came in the form of a fellow ballerina, a young lady I spotted on the metro! I was struck by the elegance of her silhouette as she moved amongst the crowds in her pale blue ballet tutu – I must say she definitely added a touch of whimsy to the subterranean rush hour! We exchanged smiles, of course – that silent acknowledgement that ballet is a language all its own.

Another highlight of the week has been riding the city's underground transport. There's a real charm about bustling underground with my tutu and tote bag, observing the vibrant, fast-paced rhythm of the city. I mean, how can you resist a good spot of people watching in such an environment! I just love getting a taste of real New York life - the sounds, the smells, the rush of it all!

Although I did have an experience, one that made me laugh as much as I cringed - when I got caught in a "fairy scrum" on my way to a ballet performance. Let me explain.

Picture this: You've just entered the underground, rushing to catch a train. Then you see them. Three little girls, dressed as fairies for a Halloween costume, doing pirouettes on the station platform! Now, anyone who's travelled on the underground will understand: the platforms can be small, the crowds dense, and it's often chaos on a good day. I have to admit I was pretty worried. I tried my best to get by these delightful dancing sprites, careful not to bump into them.

As I moved through the station, these fairies twirled about, giggling, waving their wands, and making people smile. They really had captured that sense of joyful imagination! But, their twirls seemed to be a bit haphazard - more twirling than twirling properly if you know what I mean! It felt like I was in a ballet performance gone slightly off-kilter!

Honestly, they had me momentarily stuck as they took their places, like they were going to start an actual ballet on the platform, and they clearly expected all the other commuters to join in their fairy-inspired dance routine! And there was this young mother in a power suit looking like she was about to burst out of her own tutu with irritation at the little fairies twirling their little skirts in front of her! They truly added an unpredictable twist to the day! I have to give these tiny dancers full marks for adding their little sprinkle of magic into the daily commute! It's moments like this, silly little spontaneous things like a “fairy scrum,” that remind me why I adore this city! There's never a dull moment in New York!

Looking Ahead: Twirling Through November

But with all that, the month of November has only just begun and already there are exciting prospects on the horizon: There's a special performance of “The Nutcracker” in Central Park happening at the end of the week which I am quite keen on seeing, even if it's in an ice rink, I reckon there will be plenty of opportunities for twirling. And on Sunday, the famous ballet troupe “Dancers of the World” will be performing at the Jacob Javits Convention Center - their show looks spectacular! Of course, you can be sure that I'll be reporting back with my take on both events!

With so much to explore and experience, I can hardly wait for the next adventures to unfold. Remember to follow along, dear reader!

Now, I’m off to grab a cupcake (a little afternoon indulgence is vital in the Big Apple) before getting back into those ballet shoes for tonight's performance at a local arts center. And I'd love to hear about your week, too! Have you spotted any unusual moments? Do you have any pink tutu adventures to share?

Leave me a comment and tell me all about it!

Stay twirly, and keep sparkling!

Much love, Emma
