Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #767 - Monday 15th February 2010

Helloooo darlings! It's Monday, which means it's time for a new Pink Tutu Blog NYC post! This week, I'm back in the Big Apple, and let me tell you, it's been a whirlwind of sequins, subway rides and, of course, pink tutus!

Derbyshire to Manhattan, in a Pink Tutu, of course

Last week, I was back in good ol' Derbyshire, doing a charity performance for a lovely group of elderly ladies (they were so sweet!). I felt so lucky to be dancing again in the familiar setting of the local village hall. They even gave me a lovely floral headpiece, perfect to wear under my signature pink tutu!

But don't you worry, I didn't stay in England for long. I’m back in the fabulous city of New York, with its bright lights, bustling streets, and that irresistible feeling that anything is possible. This city just ignites a spark of creativity in my soul.

A Pink Tutu in Times Square

Landing in JFK and making my way into Manhattan is always an experience. There's something truly exhilarating about stepping out of that bright, imposing airport terminal and onto the 7 train. Even with my ballet bag on one shoulder and my favourite pink tutu stuffed into my backpack, I felt like I could conquer anything. I mean, New York is the city that never sleeps, so I couldn’t very well show up in a fluffy pink tutu and my slippers, could I?

I got myself all dolled up, slipped on my pink tutu and I felt ready to take on Times Square. Let me tell you, that pink tutu looked even more fabulous against the bright lights of Broadway. There were people from all walks of life, taking in the neon-lit world. And while everyone was bustling about, it felt like all eyes were on me. They just had to admire that amazing, fluffy, pink tutu. The whole thing was magical, truly!

* Ballet Extravaganza - An Evening at the Met*

Of course, I couldn't have come to New York without a little ballet fix. I treated myself to a delightful performance at the Metropolitan Opera. The music was just sublime, the choreography breathtaking, and I found myself swept away in the story told through movement. It reminded me how much I love the power of ballet, how it transcends language and culture and speaks to us all in a universal way.

But it wasn't just the performance itself, the Met itself is a majestic building! I felt a real sense of history and elegance as I wandered through the grand halls, and you just know that there were dancers, musicians, and artists who have stepped through those doors before me. The anticipation as you wait for the curtain to go up, the collective gasp from the audience when the first notes of music play – there's no other experience like it!

A Pink Tutu and Broadway Brilliance

You can't really come to New York and NOT see a Broadway show, can you? And honestly, nothing pairs better with a pink tutu than a Broadway extravaganza.

This time I went to see a show that I just adored called "Jersey Boys," which tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. You can just imagine the energy and passion! It was a real mix of incredible singing, dynamic choreography and those beautiful classic melodies that were just impossible not to tap your feet to.

As the curtain fell on the final number, my pink tutu and I walked out into the cold night air buzzing with the excitement of the evening. You just know that everyone's gone home to watch their own ballet videos after a Broadway show!

Shopping on Fifth Avenue – A Pink Tutu's Paradise

Every girl who loves ballet needs a beautiful tutu for every occasion, and of course, Fifth Avenue was the perfect place to find the ultimate shopping inspiration. Imagine endless racks of silk, lace, and sequins! Every designer imaginable was right there at my fingertips, begging to be a part of my wardrobe. You wouldn't believe the fabulous deals I found – including a vintage pink feather boa! Perfect for an elegant ballet rehearsal or a night out in the city.

But I had to make a promise to myself not to go crazy, though, my bank account doesn't quite allow for those spontaneous designer purchases. So I went into Zara and treated myself to a beautiful floral print scarf. Perfect for wearing with a pink tutu on a night out. Even though I'm all about supporting independent designers, Zara is amazing!

Subway Stories

One of my favorite things about living in New York City is the subway. Okay, I admit the whole 'no air-conditioning and delays' situation isn't perfect, but the atmosphere is absolutely unique! It’s always so fascinating to watch New Yorkers rush through the platforms, some engrossed in their phones, some caught up in animated conversation, some lost in their own worlds, and me in my pink tutu!

I met this incredibly kind woman on the 6 train the other day who I shared my thoughts on fashion, travel, and the importance of always adding a touch of pink to your wardrobe. I could have chatted with her for hours, we had so much in common. She said, “I love your style!” as she walked away and that honestly made my day. It’s amazing what you can find if you open yourself to new friendships.

The Art of Being Bold - In Pink, Naturally

The beauty of New York is that it’s a city of fearless individuals who don’t shy away from expressing their uniqueness. So I’ve come to think of it as a challenge! Every day is a chance for me to bring a little bit of sparkle to this dazzling city – my signature pink tutu and all. It's a little nudge for everyone to get outside their comfort zones, to dance to their own beat and celebrate who they are. And maybe, just maybe, they'll find themselves wanting to wear a pink tutu.

The city embraces you – whether you are a famous musician or someone rocking a pink tutu on the subway, every soul in the city deserves to feel their spark. So go on, take a deep breath, step out of your comfort zone and try a pink tutu!

Until next Monday!

Lots of Love,

Emma
