Pink Tutu Blog NYC #786: New York, New York! A Pink Tutu Wonderland

Hello, darlings! Emma here, and I'm absolutely buzzing to be back with you from the Big Apple – New York City! It feels like ages since I've touched down in this metropolis, so forgive me if I sound a little giddy, but I'm positively bursting with excitement!

As you know, my Monday blog is dedicated to sharing my adventures from this glorious city, a place where the magic of Broadway lights, the chicest fashion, and a dash of "you go girl!" attitude collide. I just love the buzz of New York City, especially when I get to spend it in a twirly pink tutu. Let’s just say that even the pigeon on the corner can't help but give you a knowing wink when you're rocking a pink tutu!

The Journey to the City That Never Sleeps

Now, getting to New York City was quite a journey in itself! I travelled from my lovely Derbyshire home (you know, the Peak District, where the rolling hills and sheep outnumber the people?) straight to London, hopping on a Eurostar to Paris and then onto a transatlantic flight, straight to New York's bustling JFK.

I always travel in my tutu. It's my travel uniform, my lucky charm, my confidence boost, and an ice breaker to boot! Everyone wants to talk to the girl in the pink tutu, and I'm all for it. We have a good time. And what a sight it was as I waltzed through JFK's arrivals hall! It's fair to say the pink tutu made an impression, much like the beautiful Statue of Liberty herself.

The Subway – An Artistic Canvas of Humanity

Speaking of "getting there", I must tell you about my experience on the subway – the artery of New York City life! Yes, there's the inevitable jostle, a little pushing and shoving, and a bit of "get out of the way!" - all perfectly normal. But beneath the chaotic symphony of honks and bustling footsteps, you can feel the heartbeat of the city, an underlying energy that's intoxicating and energising. I like to watch people going about their day – everyone with their own stories. Each carriage is a moving painting, a glimpse into the lives of millions of different people.

Fashion in the City – Where Style Reigns Supreme

Of course, no trip to New York City would be complete without a good dose of retail therapy. This city is a shopper's paradise! Let’s face it, even the birds wear designer handbags here, they look so chic! I found a lovely vintage shop tucked away on the Upper East Side that had some gorgeous pieces, all vintage but with a modern twist. Think high-waisted skirts with sparkly belts, silk scarves with hand-painted designs, and vintage dresses that just begged to be twirled in! Oh, and I also discovered the best little independent tutu shop in Soho, called "The Tutu Corner." Just imagining myself pirouetting in a pink feather boa, adorned with rhinestones and sparkles… pure magic, darling!

A Ballet-Themed Spree – Finding Magic at Every Turn

New York is known for its theatre scene, especially its ballet. And let me tell you, there is a buzz in the air around any performance – from the glamorous pre-show dinner in a Michelin-starred restaurant (with all its white tablecloths and crystal chandeliers, of course) to the roar of applause from a standing ovation as the final curtain drops.

This week, I treated myself to a performance of Giselle by the New York City Ballet. It was nothing short of spectacular. I loved the expressive power of the dancers, the breathtaking choreography, and the intricate costumes – pure artistry and grace. Seeing ballet at this level just reminded me that this is what I live for – the magic of movement, the joy of storytelling, the pure enchantment of it all!

And don't even get me started on the street performers in Times Square! Every night, there's a vibrant scene – acrobats, fire dancers, musicians – all competing for the attention of passers-by. Sometimes there's a bit of impromptu ballet dancing on street corners – I always sneak in a twirl with them, it’s such good fun!

A Delicious Taster of New York’s Flavors

No trip to New York City is complete without a food adventure. And, of course, a cupcake – you can't say you've experienced the city without a New York cupcake, or two. I sampled some delectable, super-sweet delights from Magnolia Bakery in Chelsea (you know, the one on Sex and the City). Let's just say they were worth the wait, but be warned, one is not enough! The flavours are beyond heavenly. Imagine pink vanilla frosting, and that irresistible fluffy cake, with the right balance of sweet and creamy. It was simply delightful!

But it's not all about cupcakes and cakes, darling. You know me, I love trying out all sorts of new flavours, and New York City delivers on that front. Last night, I dined on an amazing steak with creamy garlic mashed potatoes, all the way in Greenwich Village – a true classic with an American twist.

Meeting the New York Crowd

From the fashionistas strutting around Fifth Avenue to the aspiring actors trying their luck on Broadway, New Yorkers are definitely unique! There's something electric in the air - everyone's driven, ambitious, full of dreams and a ‘can do' attitude. The locals are a colourful mix, just as colourful as my pink tutu, if I do say so myself! But everyone is surprisingly friendly and welcoming once you get to know them. I had a delightful conversation with a taxi driver who turned out to be an amateur ballerina, talk about serendipity!

New York City – A Constant Source of Inspiration

New York City has this captivating energy that just draws you in. It's a city that never sleeps, constantly reinventing itself. I love how the energy of the city never lets you feel tired or bored. There is always something happening, something to discover, somewhere to go and someone to meet. There's an undeniable sparkle in the air - a constant buzz, a beautiful chaos.

Oh, and one more thing – this week was my lucky day because I bumped into a little group of fellow dancers near Times Square! We had a quick chat about all things ballet and swapped our favorite tutu stores and dance classes. And as we parted, one of the ladies said "It's so lovely to see you dancing about in a pink tutu – it makes our day!" And she’s not the first to say that, my pink tutu really brightens people’s day.

As for me, I'm just trying to inspire everyone I meet to embrace their inner dancer, put on a pink tutu, and let their true self shine. If my tutu can make the streets of New York City a little brighter, well, I’d say it’s doing its job just fine!

Until next Monday, darlings, remember: Every day is an adventure, embrace life, twirl like no one's watching, and let the world see the fabulous you in all your glory.

With love and a twirl,

Emma.
