Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post 848 - A Whirlwind of Pink in the Big Apple
Monday, 2011-09-05
Good morning, darlings! It's Monday again, and you know what that means... time for another whirlwind tour of New York City through the eyes of your favourite pink-tutu-clad blogger, yours truly, Emma.
This week, I'm feeling particularly giddy. Why, you ask? Well, this week I danced! In New York City! And not just any dance, but the Nutcracker.
Yes, you heard right! My last performance at the Royal Albert Hall (oh, how I miss London!) finally landed me enough cash to grab a round-trip ticket to the Big Apple, where I was invited to join the New York City Ballet for their legendary annual Nutcracker production. It's been a dream come true since I first saw the production in Derbyshire as a wee thing, so you can imagine my excitement as I squeezed onto the metro, a little tutu peeking out from my suitcase, en route to the magical Lincoln Center.
Speaking of tutus, let's be honest, they're the only reason I'm allowed on the metro, right? Everyone just stares and smiles, whispering "Look at that cute girl! Oh, I wish I was that bold!". My latest addition is a gorgeous pink number, naturally, and this week it was a sight to behold amidst the crisp autumn leaves of Central Park. The whole city just seemed to swirl around me in a delightful ballet of colours, with my own little pink twist, of course.
Now, before you all ask, no, the Nutcracker performance didn't require my signature pink tutu. You see, I have to stay professional when I'm working. Thankfully, I could wear a lovely, classic white tutu which danced beautifully, feeling light as air in my very first Nutcracker performance, under the magnificent glittering chandeliers of Lincoln Center. It was simply breathtaking.
However, for those who are a little intimidated by the thought of donning a full-blown tutu, have no fear, because my adventures aren't just limited to fancy performance halls and grand stages. Every day is an opportunity for a bit of pink tutu magic, and trust me, this city never fails to inspire!
I managed to squeeze in some shopping at Bergdorf Goodman after the rehearsal. Honestly, their selection of gorgeous pink dresses and accessories was utterly inspiring. They even have the most exquisite vintage fur shrugs and jackets, the sort you see in classic old Hollywood movies.
That evening, a group of dancers from the company invited me for cocktails at a charming little spot in Greenwich Village, "The Pink Teacup" (can you guess my favourite corner? Of course!) and let's just say the conversation flowed as effortlessly as a perfect pas de deux. We shared stories about our careers, the joys and challenges of life on stage, and you know, that bit of extra sparkle in our lives thanks to our beloved tutus! There was a particularly amusing moment when one of the dancers confessed to keeping a stash of pink tutus in her apartment for "unplanned ballet adventures" - apparently, New York City offers some wonderful opportunities to let your inner tutu loose! We agreed that if everyone donned a pink tutu at least once a day, the world would become a much more beautiful place. It's the little things, isn't it?
The following day, I indulged in a bit of "Pink Tutu Tourism" – I absolutely adored seeing the iconic sights of the city, my favourite being the Brooklyn Bridge. You can just picture me, gliding along the walkway, the wind whipping through my hair as I imagined a ballet choreography of the cityscape around me.
Later that night, I finally had a chance to relax and do what every dancer needs: recharge. But even then, my love for pink didn't fade! My chosen sanctuary was the infamous “Pink Flamingo,” a chic, romantic little restaurant hidden in the bustling streets of SoHo, known for its delicious cocktails and vibrant decor – and yes, a smattering of pink. It truly was the perfect end to a hectic day!
My time in the Big Apple might have been brief, but I came back with my spirit brimming with inspiration. This is a city that pulsates with a contagious energy. I found myself drawn into a whirlwind of dance performances, artistic installations, fashion trends, and pink everywhere! And all I can say is that I am absolutely smitten.
And you, darlings, I encourage you to find your own “pink tutu” moment, be it a dress, a scarf, a flower, a tiny detail in your home décor, something that sparkles and delights you. Because let’s face it, there's nothing quite like adding a touch of pink and a hint of twirling to your everyday routine, right?
Until next week, keep dancing, keep smiling, and remember, a little pink tutu never hurt anyone!
Love always,
Emma
