Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Adventures - Post #857 - Monday 7th November, 2011
Oh darling, what a glorious weekend! This week's NYC adventure started on Friday with a performance at the Joyce Theatre, where I finally got to see the mesmerising Akram Khan Dance Company. It's truly unbelievable how much emotion they weave into every move - the grace, the power, the sheer beauty of it all! I'd seen their work in England before, but it's something else seeing it live. And the audience! Absolutely rapt.
I was lucky enough to meet Akram Khan himself afterwards. Can you believe it? I couldn't quite believe my eyes - he even complemented me on my tutu, which was my most flamboyant, fluffy pink one, you know? A full-on ballgown of a tutu, complete with glittery tulle, a pink feather boa, and of course, a pink satin ribbon headband. It's hard not to stand out with that one! He seemed delighted by my outfit and, to my surprise, gave me a cheeky grin and whispered, "Now that is how you do it." A truly wonderful compliment from a master! I honestly believe if anyone could get a whole audience into a pink tutu, it would be him.
Later, we headed for dinner at The Smith. Now, darling, you simply must visit this place. The food was incredible - think truffle mac and cheese, perfectly charred steaks, and a delicious salad for my friend Olivia. She always gives me the side eye about the pink tutu, you see, even though I promise it's not just a fashion choice. It's a statement! An embrace of fun, an invitation to joy, and a commitment to letting the inner ballerina bloom, even in a crowded city like New York!
After dinner, we found ourselves strolling down the streets of Greenwich Village, my pink tulle swirling in the autumn air. It's my favourite time of year - the city is abuzz with creativity, and everyone is bursting with life, especially the fabulous fashion. Speaking of which, did I tell you about my new pink cashmere coat?! I saw it on a whim while window-shopping, and it was practically begging me to take it home. I knew immediately it would be perfect for the NYC chill, and, of course, I found the most perfect blush pink gloves to go with it. Honestly, my life was made when I found them! They’re like fluffy, pastel dreams, and my hands have never felt so chic.
On Saturday, it was off to the Metropolitan Opera House for Carmen. The music, the drama, the sheer magnificence! And it gave me so much inspiration for a dance sequence. Yes, darling, you know I had to put my own pink-tutu twist on it. I envision swirling with the grace of Carmen and the fierceness of a flamenco dancer. All the while wearing my tutu, naturally. The dream, really, is for a choreography set in a vibrant pink world where all the tutus come to life, swirling and leaping through the streets of New York, like a flash mob with pink tulle and endless joy! Oh, how exciting it would be!
I spent the evening at my friend Anna’s adorable little apartment, filled with bookshelves, a vintage record player, and all kinds of adorable little vintage decorations. It reminded me so much of home, especially as it's in one of those old buildings, like a small slice of England nestled in the heart of New York. She had a very sweet English tea with clotted cream, scones, and even proper clotted cream, a true delight after the delicious (and completely American) fried chicken we'd had for lunch. She’s really started embracing pink!
Sunday morning began with yoga at a charming little studio tucked away in Soho. You can't escape pink here in New York. The walls were even adorned with images of pink ballerinas! After yoga, I wandered through the streets of SoHo, feeling completely inspired and full of that New York energy that's both calming and exhilarating.
On the way to brunch with Olivia at a cosy French cafe called Cafe Luxembourg, I had to take a quick detour to a pink shop on Bleecker Street. It’s so cute, it almost feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale, darling! I spent an entire afternoon wandering the rows and rows of blush pinks, fuchsia reds, and even baby-pink, discovering incredible treasures: a silk pink scarf with delicate flowers, a pink leather notebook with a vintage-inspired design, and the absolute cutest tiny pair of ballet flats with pink ribbons and sparkly silver embellishments. I can't wait to wear those to a special occasion.
Speaking of ballet, that evening I attended the Ballet Folklórico de México at the Lincoln Center, and what a show! The colours, the costumes, the stories! It's a must-see, my darling. Even the dancers in their pink tutus were inspiring. I mean, just imagine the swirling fabrics, the energetic leaps and turns.
This whole week has truly been about embracing my passion for pink, for dance, for fashion, and most of all, for finding joy and magic wherever I go, and maybe getting the whole city wearing a pink tutu one day! After all, who doesn’t want a touch of colour and a whole lot of sparkle in their lives? I might just bring out my most extravagant tutu next time, a feather boa, a tiara, and maybe even some glittery eyeshadow to complete the look. I mean, when in New York, right?
That's all for now, darling! Keep checking in for my next post – there's so much more adventure to be had, and so many pink tutus to be worn!
Yours, with pink, Emma www.pink-tutu.com
