Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Monday 2012-02-13 - She Danced in New York City!
Good morning darlings! It's a bright and beautiful Monday in the Big Apple and your favourite pink-loving ballerina is back with another dazzling dose of New York City fun. As you know, I adore travelling to new cities and finding the perfect spot to spin a pirouette or two, and there's nowhere quite like the concrete jungle for ballet-tastic adventures!
This week has been absolutely splendid, a whirl of twinkling lights, graceful performances, and a whole lot of pink, of course!
From Derbyshire to Manhattan: My Latest JourneySo, how did I even get here, you might be wondering? Well, as you all know, my love of ballet is my lifeblood, it's what keeps me spinning! I recently had the privilege of performing in a breathtaking production at the beautiful Curve Theatre in Leicester – an amazing experience that I truly treasure. But enough about me, you need a little theatre, and New York City is calling my name!
It's always such an exhilarating feeling to board the plane, knowing I'm headed for a city bursting with culture, creativity, and enough pink to make a flamingo blush! It's almost enough to rival my own collection!
Now, my journey is more than just a solo act. My travelling budget is funded entirely through the sheer joy of performance – dancing to spread the sparkle and delight in every show. The power of movement really does drive my life! And as always, my trusty pink tutu was packed (along with some fabulously-fluffy pink slippers for the plane journey, of course!)
Arriving in the City That Never Sleeps (And Maybe Wants to Shop!)From the moment I stepped out of the airport, I knew I was in the right place. That bustling, vibrant energy of New York – it just takes over you! It's all neon lights, street performers, honking cabs, and a cacophony of laughter that gets you moving. I love how every moment here feels electric!
First on my agenda: The subway. A true icon of New York City, it's a maze of underground corridors and platforms. This week's adventure took me on a whirl from Penn Station, which is practically buzzing with activity, all the way to Times Square - a glittering extravaganza of flashing lights and larger-than-life billboards! Every journey is an opportunity to soak up the New York atmosphere!
Of course, it wouldn't be a Pink Tutu adventure without a little shopping. My first stop had to be Saks Fifth Avenue! A fabulous emporium of fashion with floors overflowing with the latest designer dresses, sparkly heels, and more bling than you can shake a diamante-studded handbag at! You just have to feel the pink!
The Pink Tutu Guide to Broadway! Now, no trip to New York City is complete without experiencing the iconic magic of Broadway. And guess what? The very first thing I saw was "Wicked"! This show is a masterpiece. The story is magical, the music is unforgettable, and the costumes… absolutely jaw-dropping! It truly inspired my own ballet ambitions and the colourful magic in my everyday life!
I have to admit, I was a little envious of those beautiful green dresses – just imagine the photo-ops! However, as any true ballerina knows, the power of a good tutu knows no bounds. There's nothing like swirling and twirling across the stage – just pure, delightful fun!
But you know what I love most about the Broadway scene? The sheer sense of joy and community that permeates everything. From the moment you step inside a theatre, it feels like everyone is part of something special.
You're not just watching a show, you're part of a shared experience, surrounded by fellow theatre enthusiasts and artists of all kinds. It’s contagious – this magic in the air, this joy in watching other dancers soar! I felt it myself when I performed in front of a sold-out audience – the feeling of excitement as the music swelled, the energy in the theatre. You wouldn't trade that for anything in the world!
The "Must See" Ballet Shows: My Picks for NYCThis being a ballet blog, let's dive into some amazing opportunities for the discerning ballerina! While the shows themselves may change, I always like to mention a few highlights!
For the Dance Enthusiast:
- American Ballet Theatre: Renowned for its exquisite choreography and top-notch performers.
- New York City Ballet: Famous for its connection to George Balanchine and innovative productions.
- Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: Offers a captivating mix of modern, contemporary, and African-American dance styles.
This time, I was fortunate to get tickets for “Giselle" performed by a phenomenal dance company in the city – the Metropolitan Opera Ballet! What a truly magnificent experience. I was totally mesmerized by their delicate movements and heartfelt performances. Giselle herself was so graceful and elegant - every single detail in the costumes was beautifully rendered and so elegant!
Oh, and let's talk about the costumes! Talk about pink! The ethereal beauty of the ethereal spirits in white, and the luxurious dresses the women wore in the peasant scene – they were just dreamy! The romantic story, the passion, the powerful drama… “Giselle” has really left its mark!
I do think I need to invest in a similar-style ballet dress… maybe in pink? Hmmm...
Dancing My Way Through ManhattanOh, did I mention Central Park? This sprawling urban oasis offers an abundance of green space to relax and soak up the New York vibes! I found a lovely spot tucked away, away from the crowds. It felt like stepping out of the hustle and bustle into a fairytale-like setting, and who could resist doing a few pirouettes there? Perfect for those ballerina selfies!
And don't forget the magical carousel! So enchanting, all twirling lights and the happy music of a real organ - like a real fairytale come to life. Of course, I had to hop on! The sheer joy on everyone’s faces as the carousel whirled made me realise what it is to be truly free. My inner child loves to find those spots of unbridled delight.
My evenings were filled with excitement! Every night was something different - a Broadway musical, an intimate ballet performance, a breathtaking cabaret act, or maybe just wandering the streets with a hot chocolate and a delicious slice of cheesecake.
The city comes alive after dark. You can practically feel the excitement humming beneath your feet. Everywhere you look, there's a new adventure just waiting to be discovered.
