Pink Tutu Blog: New York City

Monday 2017-07-31: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Welcome to Pink Tutu Blog #1156! It’s a scorcher here in New York City!

Every time I arrive back here in this melting pot of style and energy, I’m reminded of all the reasons why this fabulous city is my ultimate happy place.

This week, I’ve got my dancing shoes firmly planted on the cobblestones of New York – I’m back to explore a city that never sleeps!

For this trip, my travelling ballet troupe consists of one PINK TU*TU, my *PINK PASHMINA, my PINK PHONE CASE (with the little sparkly flamingo on it – my fav!), a heap of my most sparkly PINK DRESSES (naturally!) and enough PINK MAKEUP to turn even the blandest subway station into a festival of girly delights!

I’ve brought some of my very best “Pink Tutu” ballet outfits and the latest pink tutus too, ready to conquer the city in style – because this week’s theme is all about pink tutus, fabulous theatre, magical moments and… oh yes… did I mention shopping?

My New York Adventures

My journey to New York began as always in the charming Derbyshire countryside of England. You wouldn’t believe how much effort it took to pack for New York. After two hours of meticulously folding (pink ballet tights take up surprisingly little space!), the bag was full, the suitcases crammed to the brim (I love shopping – did I mention that already?), and all I had left was my faithful pink tutu – ready to add a dash of elegance to my trip!

This week I’m making the most of New York's amazing performance spaces - seeing every show, attending every dance class I can squeeze into my diary – and I'm planning a little trip down to the city’s famous garment district – for my most fabulous pink dress-hunting adventure yet!

And oh my gosh, you’ll not believe the amazing sights and smells!

Here in the city, everything is supersize and colourful and bold. There are endless possibilities on offer… and so much inspiration for my ballet dance outfits! The colourful murals and fabulous street performers inspire me on the daily. This city never stops, so I don’t either! I just adore that!

There are a billion (maybe more) things to see and do. It’s impossible to cover it all – and with so many inspiring fashionistas everywhere you turn, I can’t stop myself from making sure my tutu is on point - because every day feels like the start of a pink tutu photo shoot in New York! You’ve got to seize the day, darling – or rather the tutu-ful day!

I have already planned an itinerary so full of colour, dance, glitter, and tutus, it’ll blow your socks off (figuratively speaking, because here in NYC, those things are called ‘tights’ – how divine !).

I don’t know how I manage to squeeze it all in – but this is how I live. After a bit of serious dance practice (for this ballerina, it's absolutely essential to practice whenever possible) the pink tutus go on… the pink hair goes in… and out I go!

So without further ado - let me share some of the adventures I've been up to so far – because what’s a blog about New York without some fantastic pictures of dancing, glitter and PINK tutus? I can’t wait to show you everything!

The Pink Tutu Takeover of Times Square

Right from the moment I stepped off the subway (a super stylish, gleaming, red train this week), the city of New York seemed to have something extra special for me in store - like it knew exactly what this Pink Tutu-wearing ballerina wanted. I landed right smack in the middle of Times Square. And my dears - just let me tell you: Times Square never fails to impress.

Imagine it if you can - giant, glittering signs of every color, massive, bright video screens flashing their images all across the city (they literally make Times Square shimmer - a must-see). I couldn't wait to get some amazing photos of my new Pink Tutu, my favourite pink ballet slippers, and of course, my trusty little pink flamingo phone case.

I took loads of photos with this vibrant backdrop. I’m still in the process of editing them, but I promise I will share a little bit of New York glitter with you!

Shopping on Fifth Avenue

Every now and then, a fashionista has to find a new pink tutu to fill in their vast collection, so today I had a date with the ultimate pink dream destination - Fifth Avenue. It is definitely the most high-end fashion street you can imagine, and this weekend it was teeming with fabulous style, and so much PINK inspiration!

Imagine an endless collection of the most opulent windows, featuring mannequins dressed to the nines – or even the tens! Some windows I walked past were showing off stunning jewellery that even the most dedicated fashionista (like myself) could only dream of. Other stores were featuring some amazing dresses, including some super sparkly cocktail dresses. Some of the dresses had long, flowing trails that almost trailed behind the mannequins as though they were ballet dancers waiting for the start of their own graceful performance. There are so many stylish looks – and lots of PINK. Fifth Avenue really is the best street for a Pink Tutu aficionado to experience the very best that this fabulous city has to offer.

It is impossible to go to Fifth Avenue and resist the temptation to try on a few PINK TU*TUS, PINK BALLET * DR*ESSES and perhaps even a new pair of PINK BALET * *TIGHTS*.

And of course, my New York adventure could never be complete without a little bit of retail therapy!

It is a total Pink Tutu fan’s paradise. After all, when it comes to finding that one special outfit, you have to go where the stars shop! It’s always fun to see what the glitterati are up to… especially on Fifth Avenue!

Dance Fever: Lincoln Center

You may know me for my pink tutus and girly glamour, but the truth is, I have been absolutely obsessed with ballet from a young age. So of course I simply had to go to New York City’s cultural centre – the world-famous Lincoln Center . The energy and excitement was buzzing through the whole place – it really did feel like the centre of the world for classical and contemporary arts and dance.

My absolute favourite part was walking through the halls with a symphony orchestra performing as people sat mesmerised and taking it all in – what a privilege! The orchestra is made up of incredibly talented musicians – some of the finest in the world – they had so much enthusiasm and passion… and everyone listening had a look of awe on their faces. I absolutely love listening to a live orchestra playing classical music – the sheer skill and musicality is breathtaking – and I love seeing the talent, dedication, and beauty on stage.

*If you are planning a trip to New York, Lincoln Center is an absolute must. Even if you don't love ballet like I do, the whole atmosphere, the architecture, and the incredible displays of art… they’re just captivating! *

### Midsummer Night’s Dream: Shakespeare in the Park

Well, today has been an incredibly busy and exhilarating day!

This afternoon I went to the theatre (what else!) But instead of Broadway – today I was off to experience a performance at Shakespeare in the Park!

This amazing public park is home to free, public performances - with something for every taste – from Shakespeare to Broadway! You can find anything here – from free public films, free, classical concerts to free operas… I absolutely love it – you could spend days exploring this place! But this weekend, I’m focusing on Shakespeare in the Park. And you can’t visit this city without paying your respects to the great playwright! After all, every ballerina must know her Shakespeare!

I couldn’t resist the temptation to see the legendary play A Midsummer Night’s Dream – the world’s most famous love story, played out amongst fairy folklore and magical creatures – it’s utterly captivating, funny, sad and touching, and packed full of romance – so I decided I had to simply go! I could hardly wait!

So this afternoon I put on my prettiest, most feminine PINK TU*TU, put on a *PINK flirty ballet top, found the highest pair of pink heeled ballet shoes, and I even tied my hair with a pink ballerina ribbon before I set off on the subway.

The first act ended with thunderous applause – everyone loves a happy ending, but I’m hooked on Shakespeare now – his wit, humour, his stories, the way they have survived the tests of time… and how brilliantly they’re still able to draw crowds in and delight everyone in the park!

Shakespeare in the Park – now I get it!

My Ballet Adventure

On Tuesday, I’m really excited about another ballet-themed adventure! This time I am off to experience a professional ballet class! Imagine it - the excitement – dancing to classical music with professional dancers! I’m already getting a bit nervous (and a bit excited, but I’ll be alright!).

I am absolutely fascinated by all the professional dancers in New York City – they are so inspiring – their hard work, discipline and energy really gets me moving. I’m not afraid of a challenge! So bring on the bar, the barre, and the pink tutus!

This trip to the big apple really has everything I could ever ask for! So much glamour, style and culture. Plus the amazing food, all the colourful lights, the bustling energy of the streets – and the fabulous shops that fill up all the avenues. The pink tutu fashion is definitely on point and the sheer energy is fabulous and infectious - and I've managed to add PINK TU*TU* to pretty much everything I've seen in New York this week!

And the next pink tutu post….

Tune in next week, darlings for the latest Pink Tutu adventure - coming to you direct from New York City! Next week, I’m off to catch a Broadway musical! I have already started shopping for the most appropriate outfit. Don’t forget to comment below and tell me what your favourite Pink Tutu memories are!

Until next week, keep dancing and keep it pink!
