Pink Tutu Blog: NYC Edition - Post #1225 - 26th November, 2018
Hello my darling tutu twirlers! It's Emma here, fresh from another whirlwind weekend in the Big Apple! You might think that being a pink tutu-clad ballerina from Derbyshire travelling the world would be all glitz and glamour, and whilst there are definitely some amazing moments, it's a lot of hard work too. Especially when it comes to squeezing in as much sightseeing and shopping as possible, whilst making sure I can keep up with my ballet schedule and make ends meet.
But, let me tell you, there's absolutely nothing I'd rather do than travel, dance, and share my experiences with you lovely lot! And with New York City buzzing with excitement for Thanksgiving week, my senses were totally overwhelmed!
Now, before I bombard you with photos, I want to tell you about the absolute highlight of my trip: The Bolshoi Ballet performing "Swan Lake" at the Lincoln Center. Talk about a treat! The performance was so breathtakingly beautiful, it made my heart soar. The dancers were truly masterful, and the costumes? Just exquisite! Every pirouette, every leap, every single graceful movement - simply divine! The sheer power and emotion emanating from the stage was simply awe-inspiring.
After that magical experience, I popped into the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a bit of culture. My feet were screaming for a rest after the Bolshoi's performance, but I simply couldn't resist. The sheer beauty of the museum is simply incredible - there's just so much to see, from Ancient Egyptian relics to European masterpieces. I always try to sneak in a peek at the Costume Institute's collection, which is just amazing. Those fabulous frocks really do take me back to the Golden Age of Hollywood glamour.
I know what you're thinking - all work and no play? Never! And with a trip to New York, you know shopping was high on the agenda! I headed down to the iconic Fifth Avenue, where I was in total shopping heaven. From high-end designer boutiques to smaller, independent shops, the streets of Fifth Avenue just ooze fashion. Naturally, my wardrobe needed a little sprucing up. Let's just say a couple of new tutus and a handful of other delightful additions made their way into my suitcase. I'm not sure what's more satisfying, performing on stage or landing a gorgeous new pair of pink ballet shoes!
Speaking of ballet, Dance Magazine's Annual Dance Awards were also held in NYC last weekend! It was a fabulous evening filled with talent, grace and celebration. To think I got to watch so many of my heroes on stage! There was a moment when I had a little teary-eyed emotional breakdown. A true testament to how inspiring it all is!
After all the hustle and bustle of the week, I was yearning for some calm. I needed a peaceful respite from all that sensory overload, and where better than Central Park? As a true Londoner at heart, I have a deep affection for green spaces, and Central Park is nothing short of stunning! With autumn's vibrant hues painted across the trees, the leaves swirled around me as I strolled, lost in the moment. The atmosphere was just magical! I almost convinced myself it wasn't as cold as it was! A lovely man selling hot chocolate warmed me up while I sat on a bench, listening to some buskers performing some truly amazing renditions of classical favourites. It was the perfect way to unwind!
And now, you want to know about my weekend fashion?
It wouldn't be a trip to NYC without the ultimate pink tutu look! But of course, my tutus always need a special something to really turn heads. This weekend, I went for a gorgeous vintage-inspired look - all shimmering pink sequins, of course! Paired with a fluffy tulle overskirt, black ballet flats and my trusty pink polka dot tights, this was the ultimate look to turn heads and leave a lasting impression on everyone! You might say it's a bit bold, a little bit cheeky, a little bit vintage. I wouldn't disagree, my dears. This is my signature look, the embodiment of fun, confidence and that certain je ne sais quoi. You know the look! You know that feeling! The one that comes with wearing a tutu. There's just something magical about it. And it truly has no boundaries. You can style a pink tutu with anything, anytime and everywhere! So get those legs in motion, my darling friends. Embrace your inner pink tutu princess. You won't regret it!
This trip, I've fallen in love with all things vintage in New York. It seems everyone here is embracing that 1950s, retro glamour vibe. So, after that breathtaking show at Lincoln Center and after some serious window-shopping on Fifth Avenue, I stumbled across a treasure trove of vintage fashion on East 9th Street. It was an amazing collection of bold prints, feminine shapes and vibrant colours, perfect for injecting a touch of whimsy into any wardrobe.
It wouldn't be a New York experience without an epic visit to the famous Broadway! I took in the phenomenal, record-breaking "Hamilton." And of course, I had a great time with my fellow tutu twirlers! Everyone just seemed so excited for a good, old-fashioned singalong, and what better way to start your week than by having your heart warmed with music and dance!
With each trip to New York, I become more and more enchanted by this vibrant city. Its fast-paced rhythm, diverse crowds, dazzling lights, and unique charm captivate me every time! You can practically feel the creative energy in the air! This city has infinite possibilities, and with a little bit of pink tutu magic, I'm excited to discover them all!
It goes without saying that my New York journey was an absolute treat! This week I learned that some of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies make their way to the Big Apple - the Royal Ballet, the New York City Ballet... There’s even the gorgeous American Ballet Theatre. So, tutu twirlers, be sure to grab your dance shoes, lace up your pinkest tutu, and head down to Lincoln Center, or the New York City Ballet's home at David H. Koch Theater, where some of the most incredible dance performances in the world are waiting for you.
And, my darlings, keep your eyes peeled, because I'll be posting more pictures of my NYC adventures soon! Follow me on @pinktutublognyc, and get ready to see the city through my rose-tinted spectacles!
Until next Monday, my friends. Keep dancing!
Emma xoxo
P.S. I am still on the hunt for the perfect pink tutu in NYC! My quest will continue next time. Wish me luck, darlings!
