Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Post #1244: Dancing in the City That Never Sleeps 🩰

Hello darlings! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing blogger, bringing you another delightful slice of New York City from my week of exploring this magical metropolis. This week, I’ve been twirling, swirling and shimmering under the glittering skyline, and I’m positively overflowing with things to tell you. So, settle in, grab a cuppa (or a Pinkalicious Pink Lemonade!), and let me take you on my adventure!

From Derbyshire to Downtown

I’ve always felt a little bit like a princess trapped in a village in Derbyshire, dreaming of the big city lights. Well, darling, the lights of New York City are dazzlingly real! And after a magical ballet performance last week (a captivating “Giselle” at the Royal Opera House, by the way - I simply had to wear my pink tutu, naturally), I booked my flight, packed my pink suitcase and my most beautiful tutu and sashayed my way over to the Big Apple. I simply cannot get enough of this vibrant energy, and after only a few days here, it’s easy to understand why the world loves New York City!

A Tutu-licious Take on Travel

As always, I love the thrill of the journey as much as the destination itself. From the moment I hopped on the Tube in London, I knew it was going to be a special trip. I was sporting my brand new pink tutu – a masterpiece of sequined perfection, it felt like a tiny symphony of happiness – and as I zipped through the bustling Tube stations, I saw a wave of smiles wash over everyone. The power of pink, my dears, is truly incredible.

After landing at JFK Airport (always a treat!) and hailing a cab to my little pink paradise – a charming boutique hotel in Greenwich Village, I started to think, “What tutu shall I wear today?” A moment of sheer decision paralysis. Honestly, my darlings, my tutu wardrobe is a treasure trove of glitz and joy, so I felt a touch overwhelmed by the options!

The New York Ballet: A Must-See!

Let’s get real: what trip to New York is complete without a trip to see the world-renowned New York City Ballet? I treated myself to a seat at Lincoln Center – a magical building, it simply felt like I was walking into the heart of the arts. This performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" was just sublime - the choreography was incredible, the dancers were like swans on pointe, and I found myself mesmerized. Honestly, I was practically levitating from the energy. It was just what I needed to get my creative juices flowing and feel utterly inspired.

A Pink-Filled Day at the Ballet

The ballet inspired me to think about all the amazing people who make ballet possible – the designers, the set designers, the choreographers. They all make ballet a joy to experience. So I popped into some delightful shops – a treasure trove of pink in Soho, a beautiful fabric shop near my hotel where I just had to buy the prettiest lace and silk fabrics (think tutus galore!), and, of course, a quick stop at Bergdorf Goodman - my absolutely favourite shop on Fifth Avenue!

Then, on a whim, I decided to try a new ballet class at the illustrious American Ballet Theatre. Oh, the joy! The energy of a room full of dancers, some experienced professionals and many (like myself) trying our best to move gracefully, was electrifying.

The best part was wearing my special edition "City Ballerina" tutu, a swirling vision of soft pink tulle with a little glittering cityscape motif - the perfect dance-wear for New York. It reminded me of the ballet steps that make New York City’s very soul, every little move a tribute to the dynamic rhythm of life here.

Subway Swirl

I couldn't resist exploring the city on the legendary New York subway. The trains are like underground dance floors – I mean, have you seen those little pockets in the seats?! Made for dancing, my dears! I even found a tutu-clad lady wearing her own stunning pink tutu with a design that made it look like a subway map!

New York Theatre: A True Treat

Speaking of magic and glitter, darling, my recent theatre outing left me absolutely spellbound. "Hamilton," for those who haven't yet been swept away by its historical hip-hop magnificence, was pure theatrical gold. Every performance on the Broadway stage deserves a standing ovation - but this one, it took me right back to the heart of history. It also sparked an idea for a new tutu, maybe with a sassy 18th century design - watch this space!

Time Out for Tutu-Love

Now, darling, every adventurer needs to stop and smell the flowers (or should I say, admire the roses?). So I had the most exquisite cup of tea in a delightful tearoom in Greenwich Village. It’s tucked away on a quiet cobbled street and it's where they make a magnificent Earl Grey - just like home! They even served scones with jam and cream, oh so delightful!

From Tutus to Tables

Later that evening, I found myself seated at a charming Italian restaurant, its windows aglow with the city lights, eating the most delectable pizza while people-watching – a true New York experience, my dears! There's nothing like the energy of the city at night.

Fashion Finds in the City

My darling, you already know my love for fashion is practically a religion. New York City just amps up the fun. It's a symphony of colours, patterns and styles, and let me tell you, the window displays! I particularly loved the ones at Tiffany’s - just shimmering diamonds, the city's sparkling equivalent!

And I couldn't resist grabbing a little something for myself from a small boutique in the West Village, a perfectly-fitting pair of vintage pumps, a lovely little pink cashmere cardigan, and oh my goodness, I stumbled upon a vintage Chanel bag at a bargain! My heart almost exploded with happiness.

Pink Power: A Message of Joy

New York City truly feels like the place to express yourself. From the stylish street fashionistas to the avant-garde theatre crowd, it’s all about personality, and darling, what says “personality” more than a perfectly pink tutu?! I’m telling you, wearing my tutu makes people smile, and that, to me, is the magic of the world.

You might think a tutu might feel out of place in New York – a little too whimsical, maybe. But trust me, darling, it just fits right in with the city's joyous energy, and I find it’s all about attitude and confidence.

If a little girl can dream of being a princess and twirl in a pink tutu without a care in the world, well, we can do it too. And, frankly, the world needs a little bit more of that. We need a bit more sunshine and joy. And that, darling, is why we wear pink tutus.

Until next Monday, when I'll share more stories about my New York City adventures! Keep twirling and spreading that pink happiness!

P.S. What’s on in New York City on 2019-04-08?

  • New York City Ballet will be performing "Jewels" by George Balanchine at Lincoln Center. A beautiful and colourful showcase of different styles and costumes - you can’t go wrong with the New York City Ballet! I’m thinking about a tutu that is specifically for a "Jewels" ballet...

  • "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway is a classic. I've seen it before and it's a real spectacle – you need to book early to avoid disappointment!

  • "Hamilton" at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, a historical must-see. But book tickets now, as they sell out very quickly.
