Pink Tutu Blog NYC - #1269: Dancing Through the Big Apple

Hello darlings! It's Monday, so that means it's time for another Pink Tutu Blog NYC update! This week I'm back in the Big Apple, having just hopped off the plane from a whirlwind tour of performances in the UK, and boy, oh boy, was it a dream. I wore a brand new shimmering blush pink tutu for my performance at the Royal Albert Hall, and you'd have thought the place was bursting at the seams with glitter - I was glowing like a disco ball under the stage lights. I could practically hear the screams of excitement when my tulle swished on the stage - simply magical!

But now I'm back in my favourite city, and oh my gosh, the buzz is incredible! The city that never sleeps is pulsating with a kind of energy I just don't find anywhere else. That heady mixture of the familiar and the extraordinaryā€¦it's intoxicating! I'm already plotting out my week, and Iā€™m absolutely bursting with ideas on what to do and how to document it all for you fabulous Pink Tutu readers!

Fashion, Fashion, Everywhere

As a ballerina and a passionate fashionista, New York is just about the perfect place to be. From the glittering shop windows of Fifth Avenue to the independent boutiques tucked away on charming side streets, you can't go ten steps without stumbling across some sartorial delight. And let's be honest, you could probably dress me head to toe in pink in this city if you really wanted to! I even spotted a little shop in the East Village where every item was pink ā€“ literally everything! From fluffy pink beanies to neon pink handbags, they even had tutus in a rainbow of pink shades. Oh, the things a girl could buy!

Subway Symphony

Speaking of exploring, this week I've fallen in love all over again with the NYC Metro! I know, I knowā€¦ the subway can get a bit, shall we say, ā€œinterestingā€, but for a dancer like me, itā€™s an absolute symphony of motion! I find myself watching the blur of bodies and landscapes outside the train windows, almost imagining myself gliding across the platforms on my ballet slippers, with the screech of the brakes becoming a percussion score and the rhythm of the train the tempo of a performance! You can probably see where Iā€™m going with thisā€¦

Iā€™ve even started thinking about my ā€œSubway Symphonyā€, where I use my tutu to create movement within the train carriages, interacting with commuters. Iā€™d have to choose my moment carefully, but the visual impact could be quiteā€¦dramatic! Think pink tulle swirling around a packed subway trainā€¦ just the thought of it has my feet tapping and my imagination taking flight.

Back to the Stage: Broadway and Beyond

You all know I love the magic of live performance, so my first stop in New York has to be the heart of theatre, Broadway! There are so many incredible shows to choose from ā€“ the jaw-dropping musicals like "The Lion King" and "Hamilton" have got to be seen to be believed, but this week Iā€™m going to a special revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" that I'm thrilled about! Just the thought of the raw emotion and dramatic choreography makes me giddy with anticipation!

Of course, Iā€™m not limiting my stage experiences to the glittering lights of Broadway. Thereā€™s also a stunning array of dance performances around the city that are beyond incredible. Just last week, I went to an experimental dance showcase at a little theatre downtown, where I saw an amazing piece using pointe shoes and neon lightsā€¦so powerful and thought-provoking! These kind of shows are a vital part of keeping the art of ballet alive and relevant!

And who could forget my favourite hauntā€¦The New York City Ballet! There's just something special about the precision of the dancers, the way the tutus swirl and flow, the hushed whispers in the auditorium before the curtain rises, the anticipation, the applauseā€¦pure magic! I'll definitely be popping down to the Lincoln Center for one of their matinees this week to catch a performance and do a little star spotting. I even heard that they have special shows designed for young audiences with fun interactive activities afterwardsā€¦just another reason I love NYC!

Finding My Feet: A Ballet Class with a View

And when Iā€™m not at the theatre or scouring the streets for pink prettiness, you can find me at the barreā€¦ well, actually this week I've been trying out a new class at the rooftop studio of the High Line Hotel! Can you believe it? The panoramic view over the Hudson Riverā€¦ itā€™s pretty inspiring to do pliĆ©s and jetĆ©s as the sun sets, creating a kaleidoscope of pink and purple against the skyline! And let me tell you, even for this old ballet bunny, those 360-degree views bring a whole new meaning to the word ā€œen pointeā€.

Itā€™s funny, even in this bustling city where the constant chatter and rush are unavoidable, a good ballet class is a peaceful sanctuary. Being in the studio, surrounded by the grace of others moving to the same rhythmā€¦ itā€™s a truly grounding experience that connects you with something universal. We all strive for perfection, whether weā€™re leaping across the stage, dancing on the subway or even simply navigating the chaos of the city with a little flair.

Spreading the Pink Tutu Love

You all know I'm a true believer in the power of the pink tutu, that it's not just a dance garmentā€¦it's a statement, an attitude! And thereā€™s nowhere quite like New York where this attitude resonates more! You never know what kind of characters you might encounter here ā€“ I mean, Iā€™ve met a lady on the street in a sequined cape who gave me her number! But in every individual you see that underlying desire to stand out, to express themselves!

So this week, my Pink Tutu Mission is to spread the love and get everyone in NYC on board with my #pinktutuchallenge. Think about itā€¦the possibilities are endless! We could start with a flash mob in Times Square! Or we could even stage a pink tutu parade in Central Park! The impact on social media alone would be monumental ā€“ millions of eyeballs on my glorious pink!

Yes, thatā€™s right. My plan is to document my pink tutu journey through Instagram, Twitter and of course, on my very own websiteā€¦ Pink Tutu Blog NYC! And hey, if it takes a bit of charm and maybe even a little bit of gentle persuasion, then thatā€™s all part of the plan! Weā€™re going to get all the girls (and boys) in tutus, showing the world just how much pink joy can truly inspire! I have a feeling the Pink Tutu Revolution is about to start in the most inspiring city in the world. Iā€™ll keep you posted on how it all unfolds.

So, come on my lovely readers! Join the pink tutu movement and embrace the spirit of expression that flows through every street corner, every cafe, every metro station and every stage in New York City. This is your call to action, darlings, to wear your heart on your tutu and unleash the pink princess within! And if you spot me out in the city with my twirls and my glitter, be sure to say hello!

See you all next Monday for another installment of Pink Tutu Blog NYC.

Keep dancing!
