Pink Tutu Adventures: New York City Diaries #1522

Monday, 2024-08-05

Darling readers,

Greetings from the dazzling city that never sleeps! New York, my absolute favourite city in the world, where dreams dance in the streets, and pink tutus are definitely not out of place. I touched down last Friday with a twinkle in my eye and my trusty pink tutu tucked neatly in my luggage (no, it doesn't get crushed, I have a system). I knew this trip would be extra special, because it was going to be all about ballet! I've been looking forward to it ever since I received the coveted call-up for a guest performance at the illustrious American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House. It's a privilege to be performing with such incredible talent!

Oh, did I mention that New York City Ballet has an open call audition coming up on the 9th of August? Of course, my tutu is ready, my pointe shoes polished to perfection, and my heart is bursting with excitement. You'll find me right at the front of that queue, my fellow tutu-loving dance enthusiasts.

As you may know, my darling readers, I'm no stranger to the thrill of a city, especially a city like New York that knows how to make its visitors feel welcome. Even before the ballet commenced, my feet were tapping in tune with the city's rhythm. I spent my first couple of days doing all the usual things - a spot of afternoon tea at the ever-so-chic Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel with my mum (a very stylish woman, you know). I love their elegant setting and the delicate cucumber sandwiches, perfect for a dainty afternoon treat.

A Dash of Retail Therapy

Naturally, no trip to New York is complete without a dose of serious retail therapy, And when it comes to shopping, dear readers, let me tell you, New York doesn't disappoint. I managed to squeeze in a delightful shopping expedition at Saks Fifth Avenue, where I treated myself to a lovely pair of black silk ballet flats - absolutely essential for a girl on the go, don't you think? I also picked up a darling vintage tutu at a hidden gem in Greenwich Village called "The Little Dress Shoppe". The owner is a true vintage enthusiast, and her store is a veritable wonderland of stylish finds, including the perfect little tulle number for a swirly evening by the river!

Dining in Style

Dining, of course, was just as enchanting as the shops. The vibrant, bustling atmosphere of Eataly just had to be experienced. I adore that it offers a vast array of Italian treats and dishes under one roof. From freshly baked breads to an explosion of colorful pasta, to artisan cheeses, I could have spent hours exploring their delights.

But back to the Metropolitan Opera House. The performance was divine! Watching the graceful movement, the exquisite costuming, and the passionate performance was nothing short of spellbinding. The audience was captivated, and the atmosphere was electric. It's no wonder that ballet continues to enchant audiences worldwide.

Dancing in the Streets

And that wasn't even the end of my ballet adventures! You know how much I adore exploring hidden gems, and in this city, even street performers possess a magical charm. I spent an afternoon in Central Park soaking up the vibrant energy of street dancers. It was inspiring, invigorating, and even a tad bit intimidating to witness such raw talent unfold before me.

I am quite partial to ballet en pointe, and you won't believe the beauty and grandeur of Lincoln Center. I found myself getting totally lost in their elegant lobbies and hallways, taking in the luxurious detail of each archway, the perfectly placed chandeliers, and the breathtaking sculpture gardens.

Taking to the Metro

Now, for someone who absolutely loves tutus, you wouldn't believe how much I love the New York subway. There is nothing like the exhilarating feeling of whizzing past bustling streets and skyscrapers, knowing that a world of possibilities lies ahead. Every journey is a little ballet performance, don't you think? You know I have to add, there are few things as charming as navigating New York's labyrinthine subway system, feeling the beat of the city pulse beneath my feet, all the while gracefully balancing my tutu so it doesn't get stepped on.

I’ve discovered a fantastic café close to my ballet studios called " The Tea Cup" - where I can fuel up with their fabulous organic teas, pastries, and gluten-free delights. My go-to is the rose and hibiscus blend; it gives me an extra pep in my step when rehearsing for a big show! You’ll find me there each afternoon for my customary tea break.

And did I tell you about my ballet instructor, Madeline? She is an absolute powerhouse, her energy infectious! She truly encourages everyone to explore their personal dance style and she has the most whimsical collection of dancewear in all the right shades of pink, of course. I may or may not have splurged on a new leotard and a pair of custom-designed pointe shoes in a vibrant coral pink (so chic!)!

My journey is far from over, darling readers, and I will definitely keep you updated on my every pink tutu escapade! In the meantime, remember, darling readers, pink tutus are not just for ballerinas, they are for anyone and everyone who dares to embrace their inner sparkle. Embrace the joy of movement, of laughter, of life, of twirling! Spread a little tutu magic wherever you go. Until next Monday, keep dancing your heart out, darling readers.

Until next week,

Love, Emma

P.S. Did I mention the new broadway show called "Tutus & Taps" opened in New York? It has a stellar cast of Broadway dancers and even includes tap dancing sequences - definitely something to see for any dancer who wants a little tap on their ballet routine. If I'm feeling brave I might even get my tap shoes out of retirement!

P.P.S Remember, darling readers, a little pink goes a long way! Always stay fashionable and keep your head held high - just like a true pink tutu warrior! You'll be amazed by the joy and confidence it can bring. Just keep twirling.
