Oh my darlings! I am back in New York City! It's so good to be back in the city that never sleeps, the metropolis of dreams, the place where anything is possible! This city, like a fabulous pair of stilettos, always has me feeling on top of the world. And speaking of feeling on top of the world, I am feeling truly inspired after my trip to see a most fabulous ballet performance! Oh, you just have to know this! It's the reason I've dedicated this whole blog post to my dance experiences here in NYC!
I know, you're thinking, "Emma, isn't it a bit too obvious to focus on ballet in New York?" But darling, New York's ballet scene is a revelation! From the hallowed halls of the Lincoln Center to the gritty yet captivating ballet street performances, the passion for dance here is electrifying. This week, I saw "Romeo & Juliet" at the New York City Ballet - the story, the passion, the emotion, oh, it just moved me so deeply! To be in such a historic, renowned venue, the energy is absolutely phenomenal, a feeling I know my fellow ballet lovers will understand. And don't even get me started on the costumes! Exquisite, ethereal, and beautifully evocative. The ballerina playing Juliet wore this exquisite pale pink tutu, adorned with the most beautiful, delicate pearls. Naturally, my inner ballerina felt quite the kinship. And if you ask me, everyone should experience this level of ballet magic at least once!
Now, to make my NYC trip truly magical, you just know a trip to the ballet is never complete without an extravagant, theatrical trip to the fashion stores of the city! Don't judge! Shopping is an artform! Imagine: strutting down Fifth Avenue in your fanciest frock, window shopping, feeling those sartorial fantasies taking shape in your head! This city has an incredible energy that fuels that sense of fashion adventure - the excitement and freedom that only New York can provide!
Oh, did I mention I'm wearing a brand new pink tutu? A new tutu in New York City, what could be better?! I had to treat myself to a new tutu - something vibrant and shimmering, with a touch of NYC swagger, if you know what I mean. The material is just so incredibly soft, and the colour is the most glorious, almost incandescent, pink imaginable! I can’t wait to twirl it down the streets of Manhattan! This particular shade is something special, you see - it reminds me of a beautiful pink rose I spotted at the Flower District, one of my absolute favourite haunts. I can’t help but feel utterly magical, as though every glance in my direction whispers the words, "Look at that beautiful ballerina!” I must admit, the city does inspire a rather extravagant side of my sartorial spirit. It seems all those amazing outfits are a magnet for pink tutus!
I couldn't wait to try it out, so I decided to take my new pink tutu for a spin on the subway - of course, the subway is always a joy, it’s just pure New York. I had to be careful though - the carriages were quite packed - those tight spaces, sometimes you can almost feel your creativity getting squashed, as the air itself vibrates with that distinctive New York energy!
Speaking of creative, the street performances, that’s another reason I've always loved New York. From musicians playing vibrant jazz on a corner, to dancers doing some extraordinary street ballet and hip hop moves – the energy is truly infectious! The vibrancy of it all just fuels that sense of optimism and freedom – which brings us back to tutus, you see! And why can’t that contagious passion and inspiration find its way into the daily wardrobe of every single New Yorker? A vision of pink tutus filling the streets? Yes, darling! Every step a whirl of excitement! Imagine what a joyful, exciting city New York would be! I just know everyone would agree! I mean, who doesn't feel a little happier when they see a beautiful, swirling pink tutu, and feel a little of that ballerina magic?

One thing I’ve discovered over the years is that people truly appreciate ballet, you know. Even if they've never seen a live show before, that little twinkle in their eye as they take it all in. It makes me want to encourage everyone to experience it - that special joy that comes with dancing in a ballet, performing, creating! The beautiful music, the captivating movement, and the feeling of the crowd coming together in an awe of such artistry. There's something truly inspiring about seeing how a performance can bring people together, share emotion and leave a lasting impression. It's pure magic.
You know what I do sometimes, in between my regular performances, is go to different venues, the grand theatres and halls of New York City and dance there! Now this is something special, believe me! Taking that inspiration, all that energy I feel in New York City and finding new creative ways to use the space, my tutu becomes my signature! I’m dancing my way through New York City and expressing my inner ballerina! It really makes me realise how the magic of dance transcends the usual ballet halls, the limitations of the ordinary performance spaces – dance is universal! This isn’t just about dancing, you see. It's about exploring, about embracing the moment, expressing my personality, and bringing joy to the streets!
As I sit here, back at my New York City apartment – (the most exquisite, art-deco, pink apartment you've ever seen - I'm telling you! My apartment even has a fabulous pink chandelier) - I think about how it feels to see other dancers dancing their hearts out - the raw passion and dedication, the freedom they embrace with every single move. I feel inspired just thinking about it! If you find yourself on a street corner and see a flash of pink – it could be me, just sharing a bit of ballet joy, inspiring some of the joy I feel in this extraordinary city! It really just proves how ballet can be shared in many different ways. It's about connecting with people, inspiring a love of movement and a dash of that captivating ballet magic. That’s what brings us together!
Oh, don't worry, darling! I won’t be going back to Derbyshire just yet. The adventures aren't over! My time in New York is all about exploring more and more of this fantastic city. After my exciting "Romeo & Juliet" experience, my senses are brimming with creative ideas for my next ballet adventures. I might just find some hidden gem, maybe explore a hidden theatre or maybe even be spotted on some street corners, taking inspiration for my new ballet routine - all to bring a touch of my personal “pink-tutu magic” to the city that never sleeps! I just love this city, it feels like I can really express my creativity, that's what I live for. This city, with its incredible blend of classic sophistication and street art creativity, just brings it out of me! My journey’s still going on, and I just can’t wait for whatever exciting, ballet inspired journey New York brings my way. So stay tuned!
