Paris Calling! - Post #499

Bonjour, my lovely Pink Tutu Tribe!

The Parisian sunshine is streaming in through my hotel window, bathing my pink tulle tutu in a glorious golden hue. This is it, ladies and gents - Paris!

My heart is already skipping a beat like a delicate pirouette. The excitement of exploring the City of Lights, where dreams dance like ballerinas, is practically intoxicating!

It feels so wonderful to be back in France. After a thrilling, whistle-stopping journey on the Eurostar (a much more glamorous train ride than you'd imagine, with a little shop offering French goodies like macarons - hello, calorie heaven!), I found myself surrounded by the architectural grandeur of the Gare du Nord. This is, of course, no ordinary station - it's like stepping into a grand theatre set, complete with ornate ceilings and echoing staircases. It made for a fitting entrance to the Parisian spectacle!

Speaking of theatre, have I mentioned what an amazing week it's been? After another successful run of ballet performances back in Derbyshire, my travel fund (thanks to all my loyal fans!), was overflowing with excitement (and some very pretty, if slightly worn, £10 notes!). My pink-tutu-wearing ballet soul knew precisely where to direct the funds... Paris, obviously!

As usual, I couldn't resist a little fashion therapy on the way to Paris. My current obsession? A delicate tulle dress that dances in the wind just like my tutus (and is actually quite practical - promise!). Let's just say my suitcase is bursting at the seams with enough pink and tulle to make even the most hardened fashion critic blush.

My Parisian adventures have just begun, and this weekend promises a whirl of exciting escapades:

Saturday 18th July 2009:

  • The Ballet National de Marseille: Oh, darling, have I got a treat for you! My first night in Paris and I'm already on my way to see a stunning production by the Ballet National de Marseille at the Opéra Garnier! You might know this spectacular opera house as the location for the famous 'Phantom of the Opera', with its glittering chandeliers and breathtaking interior design. It’s one of those iconic Paris locations I’ve dreamed of visiting since I was a little girl! Think extravagant costumes, intricate choreography, and enough sequins to sparkle across the Seine - what could be more perfect?
  • Dinner at a Parisian Patisserie: Tonight, it’s all about indulging in the very best of French cuisine! Imagine sitting on a cobbled Parisian street with the scent of freshly baked croissants wafting through the air and savouring a divine petit gateau, all while admiring the beauty of the Parisian night.
  • Fashion Fever: Of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a dose of haute couture! Tonight, I'll be indulging in a little retail therapy at one of the chicest fashion boutiques in the Marais. Who knows, I might just find the perfect piece to complete my Parisian wardrobe!

Stay tuned, my pink-loving tribe, for a whole week of Parisian adventures, from dreamy ballets to chic boutiques and even more amazing fashion discoveries. Until next Saturday, darling, keep twirling!

The Pink Tutu Diary: Paris

Here are the places I can’t wait to visit this week:

Must-see for a Tutu-Lover:

  • Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris: This charming museum housed in two magnificent 16th-century mansions, is dedicated to the history of Paris. Imagine the countless ballerinas and grand balls that might have graced these halls. And while we’re talking about grand balls, have you ever seen a more gorgeous venue for a Masquerade Ball? Just picture it! (and yes, of course, I will be making a pink tutu appearance if the opportunity arises!)
  • The Palais Garnier - The Opera House of Dreams: This breathtaking palace of opulence is home to some of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world, not to mention that it was the inspiration for Gaston Leroux’s legendary novel 'The Phantom of the Opera'! Talk about magical!
  • The Rodin Museum: Auguste Rodin was a master of the human form and his sculpture is renowned worldwide. Imagine walking through a garden brimming with his sculptures like "The Kiss" and "The Thinker". It promises to be a truly captivating experience! I’ve even heard rumours of some special exhibits featuring sculptures inspired by dancers – now that's a sight worth dancing for!
  • La Belle Époque: For those unfamiliar with this glamorous era of French history, think flamboyant designs, vibrant colour, and a world of artistic creativity! I'm hoping to catch a performance of this captivating play - think decadent costumes and beautiful set designs.
  • Les Arts Florissants: Prepare for a symphony of sights and sounds! It’s one of the top music groups in the world, and it promises to be a feast for my ears.
  • Centre National de la Danse - The French Ballet Mecca: Every true tutu aficionado dreams of visiting this iconic institution - a must for anyone who truly loves the art of dance! I hear the National Centre for Dance is housed in a magnificent historic building and features everything from workshops to lectures to world-class ballet performances. I might even slip into some ballet classes and show off my skills! (Just kidding… although my pink tutu wouldn’t go amiss).
  • Les Petits Champs: For a taste of true French ballet tradition, I can’t wait to immerse myself in a ballet class for young children at this renowned institution.

Shopping Delights:

  • The Champs-Élysées: You can’t come to Paris without indulging in a spot of shopping on this famous avenue, a shopper's paradise! Think top-of-the-range boutiques and exquisite designers, the perfect spot to find some fabulous Parisian-inspired fashion. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the fashion stores ever since I arrived. Paris always sets the bar high for 'high-fashion'. I'll need to think about my budget carefully!
  • Le Marais: A melting pot of quirky boutiques and art galleries, it’s an alternative and more affordable area with a unique style. Think independent shops, creative spaces, and the iconic pink Ladurée patisseries!
  • Montmartre: I've heard this charming neighbourhood in the 18th arrondissement is brimming with a mix of chic boutiques, hidden corners, and street art. Maybe I’ll even try a French beret on for size (a more practical alternative to a tutu for my hair-raising Paris journey on the Metro)!

Sweet Delights:

  • Ladurée: Prepare yourself for a sugary explosion of pink! From macarons in all the colours of the rainbow to delicately crafted pastries, a trip to Ladurée is the perfect way to experience the epitome of Parisian chic. I’ve already stocked up on macarons (one for every day in Paris! ) But I'll be back to experience Ladurée's iconic pink salon in all its glory!
  • Pâtisserie Stohrer: One of the oldest and most revered pastry shops in Paris, established in 1730! This is the ultimate Parisian treat for those who crave history and tradition. I can't wait to taste their signature ‘Saint-Honoré’ cake and a selection of French delights - the ultimate French patisserie experience.
  • The Marche des Enfants Rouges: Tucked away in the heart of Paris, this charming market offers an eclectic mix of delicacies from local food vendors. I’ve heard about their amazing cheese stall and their mouth-watering pastries, a perfect Parisian feast!
  • The Place des Vosges: If you want to feel the true magic of Parisian streets, then visiting a little cafe with a good old French “cafe creme" or "chocolat chaud" and people-watching as the Parisians go by, is a must!

Paris by Night:

  • The Eiffel Tower: Who doesn’t dream of enjoying a glass of Champagne under the twinkling lights of the iconic Eiffel Tower?
  • The Seine River Cruise: As the city lights sparkle, there is nothing more romantic than enjoying a dinner cruise on the Seine - it’s definitely on my bucket list!
  • Le Bataclan: For a true Parisian experience, catching a performance at Le Bataclan is essential! From music to theatre, it’s an intimate venue with a lively atmosphere.

I am truly excited for the week ahead - what an enchanting Parisian escape awaits!
