Pink Tutu Paris: Bonjour from the City of Lights! (Post #830)

Saturday, 21st November 2015

Bonjour mes amis!

The EuroStar has deposited me safely in the heart of Paris, and let me tell you, the City of Lights is truly living up to its name. As I write this, sitting in a cute little café near the Gare du Nord (where I’m lucky enough to be staying!), the setting sun is casting a warm golden glow on everything, and it’s magical.

This trip, my eighth to Paris (it’s hard to keep track!), feels extra special because it's been funded by my recent performance in 'The Nutcracker' with the Derby Ballet. Nothing like the joy of twirling on stage to help you fuel your wanderlust! Speaking of twirling, I've already made sure my pink tutu (it’s a brand new one, with delicate floral embroidery, I simply adore it!) is ready to take on the Parisian streets.

My first day in Paris started bright and early with a visit to the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. Honestly, this is like a giant wonderland for fashion lovers! Every imaginable item, from vintage hats to hand-stitched purses, is there, waiting to be discovered. I came away with a few delightful pieces – a beautiful lace shawl perfect for my upcoming show in December, a vintage book of ballet costumes, and, of course, a handful of vintage ribbons for my tutus.

This afternoon, my friend Sarah, who lives in the Marais, treated me to the most decadent macarons at Ladurée. Can you imagine? We literally felt like we were living out a scene from ‘Amelie’. After a little too much sugar, we walked around the Marais, popping into antique shops and charming bookstores. My heart is so full from all the beautiful and unique items I found – Parisian treasures that whisper of the city’s history.

Tonight, I’m catching the Les Ballets de Monte Carlo performance at the Palais Garnier. It’s a dream come true to see world-renowned dancers perform in one of the most iconic opera houses in the world. It's truly a magical place!

The thing I love most about Paris, you guys, is that it's always a city in motion, pulsing with creativity. It's where I feel the most inspired and energised, especially when it comes to my love of dance. Every street corner feels like a stage waiting for me to step on!

For the rest of the weekend, I’ll be busy exploring the city with a mix of classic Parisian adventures – from wandering the Louvre (with my trusty pink tutu, of course!) to sipping hot chocolate at Angelina, and then delving into some new discoveries. I hear there’s a brilliant vintage clothing market on rue de Charonne that I simply must visit!

I’ll be sharing all my exciting finds, hidden gems, and the latest fashion inspiration (it wouldn't be a Pink Tutu Paris post without it!) next week. So make sure to check back in for another Parisian adventure.

Stay fabulous and never stop dreaming!

P.S. I've just discovered this fantastic boutique called 'Une Parisienne'. I've got a sneaky suspicion this might become my new favourite Parisian haunt, filled with vintage and contemporary clothes, accessories, and a generous helping of vintage charm. Watch this space!

# Some Other Bits You Might Like

Here’s a quick roundup of a few more things you might like about Paris, and where to find them:

Food:

  • Pain au Chocolat: Find a buttery, flaky, perfect pain au chocolat from any local bakery (you’ll be spoilt for choice). My favourite? The little shop near the Pont Neuf.
  • Macarons: Indulge in Ladurée (I’ve already sung its praises, haven’t I?) But you can find exquisite macarons all over the city!
  • Crepes: Grab a perfectly crispy and delicious crepe from one of the many stands around the city, or take a seat at a café for a gourmet crepe experience.

Activities:

  • Stroll down the Champs-Élysées: I adore a walk down this grand boulevard! And remember to wear your best outfit, this is definitely a place for fabulous photo opportunities.
  • Visit the Louvre: Take a couple of hours (or days, I've been known to spend a day just looking at the Mona Lisa!), and soak in the incredible masterpieces of the art world.
  • A cruise on the Seine: Hop on a Bateau Mouche or a smaller Bateau Parisien for the most charming way to take in the Parisian scenery.
  • Dance Classes: Whether you want a classic ballet lesson, contemporary classes, or something a little more playful, the City of Lights is a wonderful place to unleash your inner ballerina!

Fashion:

  • Le Marais: I adore exploring this part of Paris for the vintage clothing stores. They offer an eclectic mix of stylish pieces at reasonable prices.
  • Galeries Lafayette & Printemps: A classic Parisian shopping experience awaits! These department stores offer everything you could ever wish for – from luxurious designer brands to more affordable pieces.
  • Shopping: Remember, every arrondissement has its own unique charm when it comes to shopping. Do some window-shopping in Saint Germain des Prés, or go on a vintage treasure hunt in Le Marais.

    Remember to be Kind:

Remember to smile and say hello (Bonjour!), as the locals here are incredibly kind and welcoming, and Paris always has a way of making you feel warm and embraced! Be prepared to experience the city through all your senses, savour the unique atmosphere, and soak in the sheer romance.
