Prague Calling! #PinkTutuPrague: Ballet, Bows, and Beautiful Bohemia (Blog Post #109)

Wednesday 28th May, 1997

Hello, my darling dears! This week, it’s not a pink tutu I’m wearing (though I did pack a bright bubblegum one just in case!), but a pretty polka-dot dress with a delicate ribbon at the waist - think vintage tea party, but with a touch of Parisian chic. I’m writing this from my cosy little hotel room in Prague, the air filled with the sounds of street musicians and the delicious scent of cinnamon pastries from the bakery below.

Remember when I told you about my ambition to take the pink tutu revolution all over the world? Well, my loves, Prague is just the first stop on this exciting adventure! I arrived in this charming city yesterday after a picturesque train journey through the countryside, passing rolling green hills and picturesque villages, feeling like I'd stepped straight out of a fairytale. My trusty little pony, Tilly, (yes, you read that right! My pony travels everywhere with me, in a luxurious travelling stable - Tilly's very glamorous) was, of course, my loyal companion.

My week in Prague will be filled to the brim with ballet bliss. I've got tickets to see "Giselle" at the stunning National Theatre on Friday. I've heard the performance is to die for, so I’ve already sketched a delightful, pink tutu-inspired outfit to wear - all the more reason to book a couple of hours in Prague’s finest boutiques!

Oh, did I tell you I found the most wonderful vintage tutu shop this morning, tucked away on a cobbled street? It was positively overflowing with tulle, ribbon, and feathers. I, of course, had to treat myself to a beautiful powder blue tutu - it reminds me of the Parisian ballerinas from the Belle Époque. Just picture it, dear readers: a crisp, spring day in Prague, the sun on my face, a delicate powder blue tutu swirling around my ankles as I stroll through the picturesque squares and admire the colourful houses.

Tutu Talk!

Speaking of tutus, let’s take a moment to appreciate these elegant symbols of grace and artistry.

I adore the history of tutus. Did you know that the tutu wasn't always the flamboyant garment we know and love today? Back in the 1830s, when ballet was first taking flight, dancers wore floor-length skirts with a delicate frill at the bottom. Then, the legendary Marie Taglioni stepped onto the stage wearing a knee-length tutu in a dramatic production of "La Sylphide", and the rest is history!

I’m planning to visit the National Theatre’s ballet archive later this week - just imagine all the exquisite costumes and historical documentation. It’ll be a veritable treasure trove of ballet history and, of course, I’ll be documenting the whole experience on Pink Tutu - keep an eye out for some lovely photographs and my personal impressions of the costumes.

A Waltz Through Prague’s Ballet Scene

It's no surprise that Prague is a city bursting with passion for the art of ballet. You see, ballet has been deeply woven into the fabric of this beautiful city for centuries. Just yesterday, I saw a street performer dancing gracefully to the tunes of Mozart in the Old Town Square - it was absolutely breathtaking! Even in the hustle and bustle of this fascinating city, there's always room for a little grace and artistry. I love this beautiful blend of tradition and modern life, where ballet takes on new dimensions beyond the confines of the theatre.

I’m so eager to explore Prague’s ballet scene beyond the main stages. I’ve heard about a local dance school that offers classes for all ages, including a "pink tutu" ballet class just for little girls! Can you imagine? Little ballerinas, all twirling and pirouetting in pink, sharing their love of dance. How lovely is that?

My plan is to enroll in the beginner’s class tomorrow, even if I haven’t donned pointe shoes since my ballet exams back in Derbyshire. It will be a fun, girly escapade.

The Pink Tutu Dress Code

And my dears, I know you are dying to know – is there a place for pink tutus in Prague? Why, of course!

As you know, I always try to incorporate the local style and customs in my own wardrobe choices. Think pastel-coloured dresses with delicate lace accents or charming vintage designs with a dash of Bohemian spirit.

I have been noticing many gorgeous stores showcasing elegant, flowy dresses perfect for adding a touch of fairytale whimsy to any outfit. Perhaps a lovely, billowing tulle skirt with a satin pink top could be the perfect addition to my wardrobe here. Just picture it: a vintage pink tutu with a playful touch of whimsy, as elegant as the dancers on stage and as free-spirited as the beautiful cobblestone streets of Prague.

Food for Thought (and for My Soul!)

Of course, no trip to Prague is complete without indulging in some local delicacies. From delectable Trdelník pastry (cinnamon-infused, oh my!) to juicy Prague Ham and heavenly dumplings, Prague is a true culinary paradise! But there's one little culinary gem that stole my heart this morning: "Pilsner Urquell" beer - absolutely divine! I may just be experiencing the essence of Czech culture with each sip!

I promise to document my Prague food journey in a separate blog post - stay tuned for culinary adventures!
