Prague, My Dearest! Post #390: Pink Tutu Takes on the Czech Republic

Hello, my lovely ballet bunnies! It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another post on the Pink Tutu blog, direct from the cobblestone streets of Prague! This week I'm bubbling over with excitement - I just arrived yesterday, and already Prague has cast its magical spell over me. Just imagine, darling, a city steeped in history, boasting beautiful architecture, bustling with life, and oh, the food! Let me tell you, I've already polished off a delicious plate of trdelnĂk, and let's not forget the divine Czech beer! It's enough to make even the most rigid ballet tutu sway.

Speaking of which, you know I wouldn't come anywhere without my trusty pink tutu. And let me tell you, it's turning heads in this delightful city. Yesterday, as I waltzed down the Charles Bridge, a charming young man stopped to admire its silken loveliness, proclaiming it "a most captivating garment." Now, if that's not a good start to a trip, I don't know what is!

Prague's Ballet Buzz

Now, you can't visit a city like Prague without immersing yourself in its vibrant cultural scene. And Prague, my dear, has such a vibrant ballet scene! This week, I'm all set to witness the exquisite NĂĄrodnĂ divadlo ballet company in action, their performance of "Swan Lake" on Tuesday was simply sublime.

Before I delve into all the beautiful detail, a little background on this iconic performance: Swan Lake is a tale as old as time, or rather, as old as 1875, when the very first performance of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece graced the stage in Moscow. I adore the graceful swans, the tragic tale of love and loss, the beautiful sets... it's truly one of my absolute favourites.

And you know I must pay homage to the gorgeous costumes! Just picture it - a sweeping white tutu, with elegant feathered accents, and let’s not forget those graceful swan wings. Every detail is carefully crafted, and that is something that never fails to capture my heart. The whole effect is utterly captivating, and of course, in the true spirit of ballet, these magnificent tutus tell their own story through movement. It's truly magical!

Tutu Talk: A History in Every Flounce

You know I’m a girl who loves a good historical context. So, naturally, we need to talk a bit about the history of tutus! The modern ballet tutu is a masterpiece of design, but you know what they say: you have to know where you've come from to know where you're going!

It all started back in the 16th century, with a long, soft, and billowy skirt - the “tutu à la Française”. This beautiful creation provided the ballerina with a graceful and flowing silhouette and was perfect for the elegant ballets of the time. It became a ballet essential throughout the 1700s and then slowly began evolving throughout the 1800s, going from that soft flowing form into a shorter skirt, tighter, and more flattering shape that eventually developed into the romantic, romantic, beautiful tutu that we know and adore.

The romantic tutu was introduced to the ballet world by Carlotta Grisi, one of the first ballerinas to truly own this amazing creation. The romantic tutu wasn’t merely a fashion statement. This shorter version allowed dancers a new degree of flexibility, making pirouettes and other tricks easier to perform! What I adore about it is that this wasn’t just a piece of clothing - it symbolised a movement. A new level of graceful lightness and athleticism on stage, and a whole new chapter in the history of ballet!

Speaking of dance history, the ballet "Swan Lake" was created in the 19th century and incorporates those classical elements that we see today: romantic ballet choreography with tutus and elaborate storytelling - the drama, the beauty! Ballet as a performance art was truly coming into its own, and tutus helped define a truly enchanting look.

By the time I’m heading to the theatre, you know that I’ll have taken every chance to pick up on more pieces of local culture! That's right, darling! Prague is known for its rich historical buildings and intricate details. But even amongst all this gorgeousness, it is the sheer detail of ballet itself, whether it is a modern or classic performance, the design of the costume and the story it tells through the movement, that always keeps me on the edge of my ballet shoe!

Prague Delights

Oh, and let’s not forget the amazing delights of Prague! I'm thrilled about this weekend’s itinerary. After all, who doesn't love exploring a new city and indulging in local delicacies!

The streets are overflowing with gorgeous vintage boutiques where I can seek out the most extraordinary clothing, a true ballerina's treasure hunt! And then there are the bustling markets and independent designer shops – they have such a quirky energy! Oh, and did I mention the art? Prague has some incredible galleries!

However, after spending all day waltzing around the cobblestones of Prague and browsing the best shops the city has to offer, I just have to slip on a new ballerina outfit (perhaps with a touch of pink tulle!). Then it's time to get my glamour on in the ultimate Prague fashion – and nothing, I repeat nothing says Prague like the gorgeous architecture and that vibrant bohemian spirit.

My Pink Tutu Dream

Speaking of inspiration, you know I'm a firm believer that pink tutus can make the world a more joyful place. One of my ultimate goals, darling, is to inspire everyone to embrace a little bit of pink tutu magic!

Remember, you don't have to be a professional ballerina to wear a pink tutu. Whether you're pirouetting in your living room or waltzing through a market, a pink tutu will add a touch of whimsical charm to every occasion.

This week, I'll be taking photos to document my pink tutu adventures in Prague – just wait until you see what looks I put together! I want to share with you all of the joy that pink tutus have brought me, to spread that little bit of ballet magic throughout the world!
