Pink Tutu Prague: Ballet & Bohemia - Blog Post #1127

Wednesday 11th January 2017

Hello darlings!

I'm so thrilled to be in Prague! This beautiful city is a ballet lover's dream, full of stunning architecture, enchanting music and, of course, fantastic ballet performances.

My journey here was as delightful as ever. I hopped aboard a comfy train in Derbyshire and watched the English countryside disappear behind me as I drifted off into a world of pink daydreams. My tutu, of course, was a delicate shade of rose, and my matching feather boa swished with each gentle sway of the train carriage.

Upon arrival, I had a little adventure: a charming pony named Ferdinand carried me from the station to my hotel - an elegant townhouse dripping with bohemian charm. The courtyard was adorned with pink roses, and I swear Ferdinand winked at me as I thanked him for the ride.

Now, onto the real reason for my visit! Today I'm going to the National Theatre, one of the most beautiful theatre buildings I've ever seen. They are presenting the Nutcracker this evening, and I've heard whispers that their version includes some fabulous, pink-tastic costumes. Oh, my, I can hardly contain myself!

Tutu Tales

But first, a little delve into the fascinating world of tutu history. The iconic garment that's been swirling around my waist for as long as I can remember actually has an intriguing origin story!

The tutu evolved from the traditional full-length skirt, the 'jupe' or 'crinoline'. These were initially stiff, enormous structures that limited dancers' movement. However, the desire to embrace freedom of movement and show off the dancers' legs in a more beautiful and fluid way eventually led to the invention of the first true tutu!

The "romantic tutu" (1830-1870), as it's known, featured a short, full, layered skirt. This style of tutu became the standard for ballet dancers, giving them more freedom and allowing the audiences to fully appreciate their incredible grace and skill.

My personal favorite period is the “tutu of the late romantic period" (1880-1900) – oh, how elegant! These tutus were still shorter but embraced more movement with their flounced and layered form.

A Ballet Wardrobe Must-Have

It's no secret that a fabulous tutu is essential for any dancer's wardrobe. Mine are definitely an integral part of my outfits!

A few words of wisdom: for those who wish to embrace the magic of the tutu, I strongly suggest finding one that perfectly compliments your personality! A romantic pink tulle number for a gentle soul like me, or a fiery red for the bold and daring, or a classic white for the graceful ballerina – the possibilities are endless!

And remember: even a simple tutu can be transformed with the right accessories – sparkly shoes, sparkling earrings, sparkling...well, everything! Pink, pink, pink!

Prague’s Ballet Scene

Speaking of ballet performances, Prague has a wonderful ballet tradition and a flourishing contemporary dance scene. I'm making sure I take in all that I can – exploring traditional and modern dance performances, enjoying some fantastic shows and absorbing all the artistic energy.

The National Theatre has a long and illustrious history of hosting breathtaking ballets. My first ballet performance in Prague took place at the magnificent building that was built on the banks of the Vltava River back in 1881. The National Theatre's original 1868 building, unfortunately, met a tragic demise, burning down before its official opening. Thankfully, the citizens of Prague refused to give up their artistic dreams and rallied together to rebuild a new and even more magnificent National Theatre. I just adore that story, full of determination and passion for art!

Shopping for Fashion in Prague

And then, there's shopping! Oh, I simply must find myself some vintage delights while I'm here! I hear Prague's antique shops are brimming with stylish treasures waiting to be discovered. Who knows, I may even find a new vintage tutu or a stunning piece of costume jewellery for a special occasion. I can hardly wait to see what hidden gems I can uncover!

Of course, the food is fabulous. Last night I had the most amazing pork knuckle - it was absolutely massive, and I swear the waiter could barely carry it on the plate! There's nothing like hearty food and a great performance to fuel the soul of a traveling ballerina.

Sharing the Pink Tutu Love

As you all know, spreading the joy of the tutu is my biggest passion. And here in Prague, the air is thick with a sense of creativity and artistic spirit, making it a perfect location to share that joy. So, dear friends, please join me in my mission to make pink tutus the most popular accessory in the world! Let's sprinkle a bit of sparkle and magic everywhere we go.

Until next week, keep dancing, stay lovely and wear a pink tutu.

Lots of love,

Emma
