Pink Tutu Prague: Ballet, Boutiques & Bohemian Dreams (Blog Post #1194)

Hello, my dearest Tutu Tribe! It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for a new blog post from your favourite pink tutu-wearing, ballet-obsessed traveller. This week, I’m taking you with me on a whirlwind trip to Prague, a city that has captured my heart with its charming cobbled streets, romantic architecture, and, of course, a vibrant ballet scene.

This trip was particularly special because, besides my usual dose of ballet enchantment, I also managed to squeeze in a few days of fabulous shopping – because what's a girl to do when surrounded by all those beautiful, historic buildings? Why, shop for tutus and fabulous frocks, of course!

Now, I must admit, the journey here was rather unique. After my last performance at the Derby Theatre, where I absolutely nailed my solo piece from “Giselle,” (can’t help a little brag, haha!) I decided to embrace my inner-child and travel to Prague by…wait for it… pony.

Yes, you heard right. Pony. I was incredibly fortunate to find this adorable little horse, Pinky, at a lovely stables on the outskirts of Derby. Pinky and I made quite the pair – a vibrant pink tutu against a chestnut coat – we attracted quite the attention on the road! The journey was filled with stunning views and a sense of adventure I wouldn’t trade for anything. It may have taken longer than your usual train trip, but for a pink tutu-wearing ballerina, it was utterly perfect.

Upon my arrival in Prague, I was greeted by the most breathtaking view: the majestic Prague Castle, perched upon a hill overlooking the city. The warm Czech sunshine seemed to bounce off its terracotta rooftops, creating a scene that truly took my breath away. As I wandered the city, the vibrant pink of my tutu blended perfectly with the colour scheme of Prague. Pink has become so popular here, and it's easy to see why. It seems to represent this city's playful, artistic side and its romantic history. The blush hues of the Prague sunset were the perfect backdrop for a spontaneous photoshoot in my new tutu, of course!

Now, about the ballet! Prague has a rich ballet history. Did you know, my darling Tutu Tribe, that the very first ballet school in the Czech Republic was established in Prague in 1711? How fantastic is that? I even found the very spot where it used to be, hidden in the cobblestone alleyways, and did a little twirl for posterity.

Naturally, my first stop was the National Theatre, a glorious Neo-Renaissance gem, and one of the most famous opera houses in all of Europe. The exquisite acoustics and the incredible, intricate design made me want to step onto the stage myself! Unfortunately, the ballet was "Swan Lake," and though the ballerina was magnificent, I did notice some discrepancies from the original choreography that bothered me a bit, and the swan costumes were, let's be honest, a little drab. Not enough pink for my taste.

No worries, though! Later that week, I saw a magical performance by the Ballet National Praha, the company associated with the theatre, in the lovely, more intimate Smetana House. This show was absolutely breathtaking – a beautiful and daring modern interpretation of "La Sylphide," with stunning choreography and costuming that truly brought the story to life. There was even a very cheeky, playful bit that had me giggling in my seat. My pink tutu was certainly a touch of whimsy amongst the serious dance aficionados in the audience, but you know me, I never let that dampen my mood.

However, what I enjoyed most, my dear friends, was seeing the passionate local dancers in the street performances at various locations. It was inspiring to see their raw talent and exuberance on display. It brought back memories of my own first performances – so full of joy, passion, and a little bit of nervous energy.

To celebrate my passion for Prague, and of course, my dedication to my favourite colour, I even made a custom-made tutu – a delightful pink-and-purple dream with intricate beading and fluffy tulle that, let me tell you, absolutely turned heads in the Old Town Square. I can't resist a little showmanship, especially in such a magnificent location! I've since learned that I must keep it zipped up and safe for now, however, as Prague's strict historical building laws prohibit excessive flamboyant attire - you know, like the type that tends to make an absolute scene. (A real tragedy for a pink tutu lover, I tell you!)

Speaking of showmanship, I had to pay a visit to the National Theatre Costume Workshop! These artisans are veritable masters, creating and restoring costumes with incredible care and craftsmanship. It's just the place for a girl who loves costumes and, naturally, a girl who wears her own tutus with a particular degree of panache. They gave me a lovely tour of the workshop, letting me see the latest ballet creations up close – I even got a sneaky peak at the rehearsal outfits for the next season! Don't worry, no pictures were allowed! It wouldn't do to spoil the surprise!

And naturally, I would be remiss to talk about Prague without mentioning its amazing food. I tried the local Czech beer (and you know what? It actually did live up to its reputation! Truly delicious), I had a delicious goulash with bread dumplings, a traditional Bohemian pastry filled with cheese, and all the fruit tarts my stomach could handle.

Speaking of sweet treats, I found this fantastic little cafe in a charming alley, called The Pink Flamingo Cafe. I knew I had to check it out as soon as I saw the sign! Their tea and their sweet treats are to die for! I am planning on going back on my way out.

Of course, I did not leave Prague without indulging in some much-needed retail therapy. This is a shopper's paradise, my darling friends. So many chic boutiques filled with gorgeous dresses and shoes and hats...I think I bought every colour of beret you could imagine. But the absolute crown jewel was a little store tucked away in the maze-like streets of the Jewish Quarter - a treasure trove of the most delicate lace and silks I have ever encountered! My hands just had to buy those stunning materials. I just know my next creation will be the stuff of ballerina legends - all pink, of course!

But let's get real - as much as I love my fashion, I was there for the ballet. My trip was all about exploring the artistic heritage of this fascinating city and understanding the story it tells through the world of dance. It wasn't just about performances, it was about delving into the history, the workshops, and the atmosphere that surrounds this captivating world.

And the most important part? Spreading the message that pink tutus belong in every single part of life, no matter how serious the surroundings or how formal the setting. There's a touch of whimsy, a splash of confidence, and a whole lot of love for dance in every swirl and twirl.

So there you have it, my dear Tutu Tribe, my journey to Prague in a nutshell! I’ll be back in Derbyshire soon, putting my new finds to good use and working on some exciting new choreography to share with you. I'll tell you more about those projects next week! Until then, keep twirling!

Remember, a pink tutu is all you need!

XOXO

Emma
