Let me tell you, Prague has been a real treat for this pink-loving ballerina, and it's no surprise why it's considered one of the most charming cities in Europe.
This is my third visit to this city of bridges, spires, and stunning architecture, and every time I'm transported back in time. Walking down cobblestone streets lined with quaint shops and majestic buildings, it's hard to believe this city has such a rich history, filled with both elegance and hardship.
Of course, no trip to Prague is complete without indulging in its vibrant culture. And when it comes to dance, this city offers a smorgasbord of exquisite experiences, from grand opera performances to street dancers weaving their magic under the twinkling lights of Charles Bridge.
Pink-Tutu Perfection: A Ballerina's Shopping Spree
My first mission in Prague was a serious ballet-themed shopping spree. Finding a beautiful tutu is my top priority, especially one that suits the romantic charm of this city.
I'm like a magpie when it comes to sparkle and frills! I just can't resist the lure of a beautiful tutu. I ventured into a boutique hidden down a cobblestoned lane. Inside, I felt like I'd stepped back into the Victorian era! Every detail was lovingly crafted: lace, ribbons, silk, oh my! This is exactly the kind of shop a ballet dancer would fall in love with, even one who just prefers watching the show!
It took a good hour or two to browse, but it was well worth the time. After several changes, a pink and gold tulle confection with a velvet trim stole my heart. The shopkeeper, an enchanting older lady with a twinkle in her eye, helped me with the finishing touches: a perfect satin ribbon tied with a neat bow, and some pearl-studded pins to keep everything in place.
My next stop was the famous Old Town Square. Its astronomical clock, with its whimsical figurines dancing at the hour, seemed like a ballet of its own! A quick stop for a delicious Trdelník - that scrumptious cinnamon-sugar-coated pastry, of course in pink (you know I can’t resist!) - and I was ready for more adventures!
Ballet, Prague Style: The National Theatre's Charm
This week's performance was at the majestic National Theatre, which opened its doors in 1881. Stepping into this neo-Renaissance gem is like walking onto a fairytale stage! With opulent interiors, velvet seating, and intricate sculptures, this theatre's atmosphere alone is enough to make a ballet lover weak at the knees.
This week, the Prague National Ballet was performing Giselle. For those who haven't had the pleasure, it's a tragic, romantic story of a young village girl who falls for a charming prince who, it turns out, is secretly a prince of the spirits! The drama is woven through the entire show, culminating in a magnificent act in the world of the Wilis, ghostly women who dance their vengeful ballet upon their broken hearts.
The beauty and emotion of the choreography took my breath away. I loved seeing the grace and passion of the dancers - the strength of their leaps, the ethereal flow of their movements. There's something incredibly captivating about ballet: It combines storytelling, artistry, and physicality, transporting you to another world.
I sat next to a lovely elderly lady who'd travelled from Vienna to see the show. She'd been coming to the National Theatre since she was a young girl and shared stories of seeing world-famous dancers and enjoying the vibrant performances. I could feel her love for ballet, her nostalgia, and her genuine enjoyment. That's what I love about ballet - it connects people from different ages, cultures, and backgrounds. It's a universal language of emotions and beauty.
Prague, My Pony & Train-ing
I also managed to enjoy some other magical moments. In my spare time, I love to explore the charming alleyways and hidden courtyards of the Old Town, where I stumbled upon a group of young street performers putting on a delightful ballet-themed display. Their colourful costumes and playful movements, with hints of tutus and pointe shoes, had a whimsical charm I just had to share!
Of course, I also took a charming train ride through the Bohemian countryside. Sitting by the window with my pink tutu bag by my side, I gazed at rolling green fields, picturesque villages, and ancient castles. The countryside around Prague has a breathtaking beauty that reminds me of old English fairy tales.
After exploring, I found my perfect pony: a small, fluffy white pony named Cloud! Who wouldn’t adore a white pony named Cloud? He trotted around Prague with me, letting me experience the city in a whole new way.
Beyond Ballet: The Magic of Prague
Besides the cultural wonders, there's a palpable energy about Prague that just makes you want to embrace life. I took in the beautiful view from the Charles Bridge at sunrise. Walking on its medieval stones as the first rays of light kissed the city, it was an awe-inspiring moment that had me feeling truly connected to the past and present.
It's no wonder Prague inspires so much creativity and is considered one of the most romantic cities in Europe. Its architectural beauty, charming cafes, cobblestone streets, and delicious pastries create the perfect backdrop for a dreamy getaway.
As I bid farewell to Prague, a tinge of sadness crept in. I already miss the delicious pastries, the cobblestone streets, and the magical feeling of exploring this beautiful city with a pink tutu and a little pony.
However, I’m certain I'll be back again soon, because this city leaves me with an overwhelming desire to see more, to discover new places, and to indulge in the ballet magic of Prague. And most of all, to find the perfect new tutu, maybe even a pink and white one to match Cloud's elegant fluff!
