Hello, darlings! Emma here, fresh off the train from Vienna and straight into the whimsical wonder that is Prague! This week's blog post comes to you from the heart of the Czech Republic, a city bursting with medieval charm, cobblestone streets, and, of course, enough inspiring architectural details to make any ballerina's heart skip a beat!
For those of you who are new to Pink Tutu, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Emma, a 20-something ballerina from the heart of Derbyshire, England, who lives for all things pink, twirly, and filled with grace. My love for ballet began in the little village hall back home, and ever since then, I've been swirling and leaping my way around the world, documenting my adventures (and sharing my passion for all things tutu!) on this blog.
As a little girl, I always dreamt of pirouetting my way through Europe's iconic cities, and today, that dream feels closer than ever. My trip to Prague is part of a larger European adventure funded by my performances, a rather romantic concept if you ask me. (Because what could be better than getting paid to dance your heart out?)
Prague has quickly become a favourite. Not only is it home to the incredible National Theatre, renowned for its world-class ballet performances, but also to some of the most charming boutique shops and designer stores I've ever seen. Honestly, it's a shopaholic's paradise! I could happily spend hours browsing for unique treasures, from handcrafted porcelain figurines to exquisite vintage jewellery.
And speaking of vintage treasures... can you imagine my joy when I discovered a vintage tutu shop just off the Old Town Square? It was crammed with feathered tutus from the Belle Époque era, glittering sequin creations, and even a few whimsical fairy-style pieces! It was like stepping into a ballet costume museum, but with the added thrill of finding the perfect vintage tutu for my next performance. It goes without saying that I emerged with a glorious emerald green tutu, perfect for a springtime ballet gala. (Stay tuned for pictures! It’s seriously fabulous.)
My exploration of Prague began, naturally, with a visit to the National Theatre. It's an architectural masterpiece, draped in romanticism and grandness, much like a classic ballet performance itself. I almost felt as though I was stepping into a fairytale. Walking into the beautiful marble foyer, I felt a sense of magic in the air – just as a true ballerina should!
The National Theatre is home to three distinct companies: opera, drama, and ballet. On this particular Wednesday, the Czech National Ballet is presenting the world premiere of a brand-new work by the talented choreographer, Ondřej Vinklár, set to music by Dvorák.
Oh, my darlings! This was truly a masterpiece! The choreography was innovative, bold, and incredibly powerful. It spoke to the very heart of classical ballet while pushing boundaries with contemporary movements. The performance itself was electrifying, the dancers moving with an energy that left the entire audience breathless.
One thing that struck me most was the powerful and vibrant spirit of the performance. The dancers exuded passion, confidence, and such an unwavering commitment to the art form, reminding me why I fall in love with ballet every single time I witness a performance.
After the show, we went for a traditional Czech dinner of goulash and beer in the charming Old Town Square. I must confess, the Goulash was delicious! We enjoyed a delicious bubbly beverage as we strolled through the brightly-lit streets, marveling at the magnificent architecture.
My week in Prague, though brief, was filled with breathtaking ballet, delicious food, and a dose of quintessential European charm. It’s a city that leaves an impression, much like the feeling of stepping into the world of a classical fairytale. I highly recommend it to anyone who, like myself, finds beauty and inspiration in art, architecture, and the undeniable magic of the world.
Speaking of magic, it wouldn’t be a Pink Tutu blog without mentioning the most wonderful discovery I made during my trip – a charming little tea shop hidden away on a cobblestone street, where the owner serves the most divine lavender and vanilla tea. I have already been twice this week – it is so wonderfully peaceful and quaint. They have delicious lavender and vanilla pastries too, which were totally perfect for a little post-shopping treat!
So there you have it, darlings! A glimpse into my whirlwind adventure in the heart of Bohemia. Now, excuse me while I go hunt down a unicorn-themed tutu for my next performance! After all, Prague’s whimsical charm is contagious, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
