Hello, my darling tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, fresh from the cobbled streets of Prague, where the air crackles with history and the aroma of roasted chestnuts wafts through the frosty air. As you know, this week is all about our favourite subject - ballet, and what better place to immerse oneself in the elegance and grace of the art form than in the magical city of Prague?
This Wednesday marks my 1788th post on www.pink-tutu.com and let me tell you, Prague has surpassed even my most whimsical expectations! It's like stepping into a fairy tale – every corner whispers secrets of emperors and queens, enchanting castles soar into the sky, and even the street lamps seem to dance with a charming waltz.
The journey, of course, was as lovely as the destination. Leaving the familiar greenery of Derbyshire, I found myself aboard a sleek train, its carriages humming with a quiet excitement that echoed the symphony of anticipation within my own heart. After a swift and comfortable ride through the countryside, we arrived at Prague’s bustling Hauptbahnhof station, and my adventure truly began.
My accommodation? A charming little boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Old Town – imagine cobbled alleyways, overflowing flower boxes, and a friendly receptionist who greets you with a smile and a basket of fresh-baked bread! What could be more delightful? It truly embodies the magic and charm of this captivating city.
The Ballet Muse:
My arrival in Prague coincided with the most delightful surprise! The Prague National Theatre is showcasing an exquisite production of "Giselle", a timeless tale of love, loss, and forgiveness. The ethereal grace of the dancers, the delicate choreography, and the haunting music all transported me to another world – a world where beauty and emotion reign supreme. I felt my heart flutter like a butterfly’s wing as the ballerina’s leaps soared, as light as dandelion fluff, above the stage.
It was utterly captivating.
Later, as I wandered through the quaint streets, my heart beating to the rhythm of the city, I stumbled upon a hidden treasure – the beautiful Prague State Opera House. I'll be honest, I almost squealed with delight! Not only was it architecturally stunning, with a facade reminiscent of a fairytale palace, but the interior was a visual feast of grand chandeliers and gilded statues. It was the perfect setting for the evening’s performance of "Swan Lake", where the intricate movements of the dancers seemed to echo the swan’s graceful dance on the shimmering water.
I even caught a glimpse of the renowned Czech choreographer, Jan Ekert, in the foyer, and had the courage to chat with him briefly about the art form. The thrill was truly indescribable. He even signed my ballet programme, something I'll cherish forever.
Pink Tutu in Prague:
But let’s not forget the heart of my travels - my insatiable desire to share my love of ballet, and, of course, the allure of the pink tutu! I’ve been doing a bit of "Tutu Shopping" and let me tell you, Prague is a fashionista’s dream! It’s crammed full of exquisite shops bursting with beautiful clothes and fabrics that would make a princess blush!
I purchased a stunning, hand-painted silk tutu, featuring delicate swirls of fuchsia and pale pink, which I knew would look simply fabulous against the backdrop of Prague's ancient architecture. I even treated myself to a pair of dainty ballet slippers, just for good measure!
Donning my new attire, I embarked on a "Pink Tutu Photo Shoot," striking poses amidst Prague's most charming sights – the Charles Bridge with its towering spires, the ancient walls of the Prague Castle, the whimsical Prague Astronomical Clock, and even in a charming cafe enjoying a delicious slice of apple strudel with a piping hot cappuccino. My little tutu photoshoot turned into a real cultural immersion as I happily engaged with tourists and locals, spreading my love for the beauty of dance.
Fashion & Culture:
And speaking of culture, Prague’s charming cafes and bustling markets are just delightful! I found myself indulging in the delectable delights of the Czech culinary scene, sampling steaming goulash, decadent dumplings, and creamy pastries. The experience was nothing short of a symphony of flavours and textures!
My favourite part was exploring the Old Town Square – it was simply magical, with its ancient architecture, vibrant street musicians, and charming, quaint shops filled with treasures. A delightful find was a vintage costume shop nestled between two baroque buildings – the owner, a retired dancer, offered me a fascinating glimpse into the history of ballet costumes. My ears perked up when he revealed that a ballerina called Pavla (a legendary Czech dancer who is a bit of a secret muse of mine) had actually bought a custom tutu from the shop for a grand performance in the 1970s.
The shopkeeper also shared fascinating anecdotes about the evolution of tutu designs and techniques over the years, reminding me of my ballet class history studies in Derby! It was inspiring to hear his passion for dance and fashion history – and it made me all the more eager to share my love for this magical art form with the world.
My Inspiration:
I was even more delighted when a kind Prague local named Michaela offered to share her passion for ballet by taking me to an impromptu ballet class. I can honestly say that the grace of the ballerinas at the class in a traditional wooden-floored studio, combined with the passion of Michaela who instructed me on some very challenging (but satisfying!) moves, has made my entire trip worth it. The beauty of ballet knows no boundaries, and here in Prague, its elegance seems to be woven into the very fabric of life!
While exploring the Old Town, I also stumbled upon a local craft market buzzing with activity. My heart leaped with joy when I saw the exquisite handcrafted jewelry and fabrics. I immediately purchased a hand-beaded necklace featuring tiny dancing figurines – a delightful souvenir of my time in this enchanting city.
As my journey here in Prague comes to a close, my heart overflows with the magic and joy that this city has to offer. But more than that, Prague has reignited my passion for ballet – it has re-energised my desire to make ballet accessible to everyone.
Remember, darling tutus, life is a stage! Embrace every moment with grace, and let your spirit shine brightly, just like the dazzling ballerina in my dreams.
Until next Wednesday,
Stay fabulous and keep twirling!
Love,
Emma x
