Hello, darlings! It's your favourite pink-loving ballerina, Emma, and this week I'm bringing you straight from the heart of Prague, where the snow is falling like a gentle ballet, and the Christmas lights twinkle like a thousand stars. I just had to share my Christmas adventure with you!
This magical city is practically bursting with festive spirit. From the stunning Christmas markets to the majestic Prague Castle decked out in glittering lights, every corner is a picture-perfect scene. It's enough to make even the most hardened Scrooge smile, and honestly, with a little sparkle like this around, I can't think of a single person who wouldn't feel a bit of Christmas cheer.
And what better way to embrace the magic of the season than with a visit to the National Theatre for a mesmerising ballet performance? My, oh my! "The Nutcracker" is simply divine - a true ballet masterpiece, especially during the festive season. The dancers are exquisite, the music enchanting, and the whole experience transported me to a world of sugar plums and dreams. It's just what I needed after my journey by train from Vienna - a lovely journey through breathtaking Austrian countryside with fluffy snow falling on the carriage windows. Did I tell you that I managed to secure a train carriage entirely to myself on the journey? I was so lucky - it gave me time to do my makeup and finish my reading on the history of ballet and it's evolution from Ancient Egypt.
Now, I'll let you in on a little secret: Prague is absolutely teeming with beautiful tutus! Everywhere you turn, there's a boutique selling the most exquisite tulle creations. I spent a blissful afternoon trying on all sorts of pink wonders, from classic ballet tutus to more whimsical styles with feather trim and sequins. And let's be honest, a pink tutu is simply a must-have accessory in Prague, especially when the city is sparkling like a magical fairy tale!
Of course, my quest for the perfect tutu took me to some of Prague's most enchanting boutiques. "Atelier Bohème" on the Old Town Square has the most stunning selection, with everything from vintage lace to shimmering contemporary designs. For a more modern take, "Krásné Tvary" in the Mala Strana neighbourhood is a must-visit. Their playful tutus, in vibrant shades of pink and lavender, are perfect for twirling through the cobblestone streets. And of course, I wouldn't be Emma without adding a few new treasures to my own collection!
Speaking of the charming cobblestone streets, it's like walking through a scene from a classic ballet. Imagine it, my dear readers: a narrow, winding path lined with snow-dusted buildings, their windows ablaze with Christmas lights, and me, in my most stunning pink tutu, gliding along with grace and elegance. Okay, maybe I did a little bit of twirling, just to get into the spirit of it!
Of course, no trip to Prague would be complete without indulging in some of the local delicacies. I recommend sampling some of the city's famous trdelník - warm, spiced pastry dusted with cinnamon and sugar, perfect with a steaming mug of hot chocolate. And be sure to pick up a selection of exquisite Czech Christmas cookies to take back with you as gifts, if you can manage to stop yourself from devouring them all!
On Boxing Day, the sky was bright with blue and it was a joy to venture out in my pinkest tutu (a truly fabulous creation in shimmering lavender that you've seen in a previous blog post) to admire the twinkling lights of Prague Castle, which overlooks the entire city, and I thought of the historical events that had unfolded there and in the surrounding squares. The dancing horses, the emperors, the nobility - a fascinating period of time that's only deepened by walking in those steps - if you can excuse the pun! I walked up to the Petrin Lookout Tower, an elegant replica of the Eiffel Tower with just as beautiful views from its top, and in this truly magical moment, I felt the deep connection that Prague has to all that came before, while looking forward to its amazing future.
There are so many other beautiful sights to behold in Prague - the historic Charles Bridge, the elegant Old Town Square with its magnificent Astronomical Clock, and the mysterious alleyways that beckon you on explorations that you never anticipated taking.
The magical Christmas markets continue to draw crowds with their stalls overflowing with crafts, gifts, and festive delicacies, offering everything from traditional handmade wooden toys to delicious hot mulled wine. Every corner exudes the joy of the holiday season and this festive energy adds an extra sprinkle of magic to Prague's already charming atmosphere.
