Pink Tutu Rome: #4 - A Roman Holiday (with a Twist of Pink!)
Ciao bellas!
This Wednesday I'm writing from a beautiful little café tucked away in the heart of Rome. Sunlight streams through the open windows, highlighting the swirling patterns on the pavement, and I'm enjoying a latte with a decadent slice of ricotta cake (delicious! you simply HAVE to try it when you’re here, girls). It's almost midday and the city is slowly waking up. But I'm up early because there’s so much to see and do. Today's #PinkTutuRome adventure takes me on a journey through the heart of ancient Rome.
A Train Journey in a Tutu
Remember how I said that I absolutely adore travelling by train? Well, this journey definitely didn’t disappoint. The journey from Florence to Rome was simply magical, taking in the Italian countryside, lush rolling hills and endless vineyards, and of course, beautiful rolling green hills. The carriage was filled with the chatter of Italian families, all decked out for a holiday, with their chattering children and excited voices filling the carriage. I must say that I felt a little self-conscious, wearing a bright pink tutu for the journey. But there’s something about a pink tutu that seems to attract attention in the best way possible.
I was even asked if I was going to the opera! Now, while opera might not be on my immediate agenda (though I’m open to suggestions, darling!), I did make quite a few friends in the carriage who were so intrigued by my travel-ready outfit and my infectious love of all things pink! You can’t argue with a perfectly pink tutu when it comes to spreading joy, my darlings!
The Colosseum: A Monument to Glory and a Feast for the Senses
Rome is steeped in history, a melting pot of emperors, gladiators, and fascinating ancient buildings. Our first stop this morning was the Colosseum. This awe-inspiring arena, with its iconic arched silhouette against the brilliant Italian sky, truly does live up to its reputation. As we entered, a palpable energy pulsed through the place – I could practically hear the roars of the crowds, the clanging of swords, and the thrill of the gladiatorial battles.
You see, I can’t go to a historic landmark like the Colosseum without imagining myself stepping back in time. Maybe for the Roman games? Or a theatrical production of such grandeur?
A Ballet Dancer’s Dream: Rome Opera House
After the Colosseum, we had the perfect lunch – a light salad of fresh tomatoes and mozzarella with local bread and an Aperol Spritz - oh, how the locals do enjoy their drinks! After which, it was on to a ballet! Tonight, I’m going to watch "Swan Lake" at the Opera House here in Rome, so I’m planning to wear my best ballet tutu to fit in, and, as you know, all that pink definitely helps.
My love for dance has led me on these amazing adventures. I don’t think you need to know that ballet dancing is my passion! There is something utterly magical about a theatre, especially when it's alive with a symphony orchestra playing, a breathtaking performance unfolding in front of you.
You see, in those moments, I'm lost in the story. The costumes, the beautiful swirling dance movements, the lights… I forget everything else! In those moments, I don't think of ballet as an art form. I don't think of technique or movement, just a sense of belonging to something powerful and utterly mesmerizing. And of course, it goes without saying, it doesn’t hurt that a pink tutu is perfectly suited to the opera, wouldn’t you agree?
A Taste of Roman Culture - From Past to Present
Tomorrow’s itinerary is even more exciting - We're planning a visit to the Pantheon, with its breath-taking dome, and the Roman Forum - and I am looking forward to browsing for beautiful scarves, shoes and maybe some Italian leather handbags in the shops on Via Condotti. My handbag is screaming out for an update, and some Italian leather will be perfect to complete the Italian look. I will keep you posted on my fabulous finds! And don't worry, there will be photos!
After a wonderful dinner tonight of carbonara pasta, followed by a scoop of gelato (all devoured in my most fabulous tutu, obviously!), I'm off to the ballet, dancing on air! Rome truly is a feast for the senses, and every single moment has been a true delight for this little pink-tutu-clad traveller. Until next Wednesday, my dears!
Arrivederci, and stay glamorous!
Emma xoxo
P.S Did you catch that? Tonight’s ballet? "Swan Lake!" Ooh, isn't that romantic?! How exciting, right? Just perfect.
P.P.S What do you think I should wear for tonight’s performance? It's got to be pink, naturally, but should it be a fluffy tutu for a dramatic statement or something more simple, to blend in with the local style? I'm so torn, so I’ll need your help, darling! Send me a message with your advice, let me know! Don’t forget to post your suggestions and comments!
