Pink Tutu Rome: #13 The Eternal City - September 6th, 1995
Ciao bellas! It's Wednesday and you know what that means, a new Pink Tutu Rome blog post! This week, I'm bursting with excitement, as I finally stepped foot in Rome, the Eternal City! My train journey from Derbyshire was magical - just imagine, me, in my cherry blossom pink tulle tutu, whizzing through the Italian countryside, my hair in a messy ballerina bun, and my head full of dreams of delicious pasta, majestic architecture and cobbled streets. Honestly, my inner child was practically levitating with glee.
Right now, I'm writing from my tiny but perfectly formed hotel room. It's perched right above a little cobbled lane in the heart of Trastevere. This neighbourhood is an absolute delight - it feels like stepping back in time with its charming, crooked alleyways, flower-laden balconies and bustling little trattorias. The air itself hums with an infectious energy and I swear I could hear an accordion playing somewhere nearby!
But letās rewind back to that moment when my train pulled into the bustling Termini Station. Honestly, I couldn't resist doing a little pirouette right there on the platform, much to the amusement of a charming Italian gentleman who clapped me along. He even said something in Italian that sounded remarkably like ābrava,ā which means āwell done.ā Talk about a welcome!
As I stepped out onto the streets of Rome, it felt like I'd stepped straight into a living postcard. The ancient colosseum was magnificent - just the size and grandeur of it took my breath away. Iāve been studying Romeās history, its architecture and its amazing art. But seeing it all in person... I feel as if my heartās just grown bigger with wonder. Itās everything and more.
I already bought myself a souvenir to mark my visit to this wonderful place - a gorgeous scarf with beautiful handpainted motifs. Just wait until I get home to Derbyshire, I'll wear it with everything, and it will look divine with my pink tutus. Speaking of which my current tutu is my beautiful lavender blossom pink with its fluffy tiers and satin ribbons. It really made a splash at my recent performance - I did a lovely, expressive variation from Swan Lake at a lovely charity event just outside Chesterfield. I even earned enough to pay for my Rome trip! You see, sometimes the magic of dance opens so many wonderful doors.
For the past couple of days, Iāve been on a whirlwind tour. I had an exquisite lunch in Piazza Navona, with its beautiful fountains and street entertainers. The food, of course, was delicious, but the atmosphere, oh, that was divine. There was so much to see, the Spanish Steps with their cascading curves just took my breath away and then of course there was the Vatican which is truly majestic I must get myself back there tomorrow.
I couldn't possibly write this blog without telling you all about the shopping, oh the glorious shopping! The markets, the little boutiques tucked down hidden lanes - every corner has a treasure just waiting to be discovered. Yesterday, I found a little hat shop and treated myself to the most elegant feather beret, in pink, of course. I simply had to have it, to wear with my tutu as I stroll through the squares of Rome in my elegant, but practical pink trainers. I cannot wait to see how it all comes together on a future Pink Tutu Rome blog post, because yes, this trip is so exciting, Iām going to continue documenting my adventures for the Pink Tutu website, one blog post every Wednesday! So don't forget to pop back for more adventures next Wednesday!
And do stay safe, be kind and if you ever find yourself wondering āWhat can I do with a tutu todayā? Remember you can do anything! Just put on that gorgeous tulle and the world will be your stage. And remember to send me your pics - your Pink Tutu adventures always inspire me, because it is my aim to get the whole world wearing a tutu by the time I am 40 - but I will need your help, you are the pink tutu posse!
