Pink Tutu Rome: Post 77 – Ciao Bella!

Wednesday, 27th November 1996

Ciao bella! Well, my darling tutus, it's time for a postazione speciale from the Eternal City! This week, your beloved Emma is bringing you Pink Tutu Rome live from Rome itself! How exciting, is it not?! I had to tell you all about it!

It has been an absolute whirlwind! After my amazing ballet performance back in Derby last week, I hopped aboard the Eurostar train. The journey was so much fun. I'd been working with a great dance group and we'd put together a really creative modern piece for the performance. A fab group of lads from London did some amazing tech and sound, it really looked sensational and got everyone cheering!

You may remember I got a little too excited in Derbyshire – all those scrumptious scones and jam from my mum's baking made me forget to get a new Tutu! Well, I will be shopping! My pink tutu collection just wouldn’t be complete without a fabulous Roman souvenir to adorn my little ballerina wardrobe. And I do believe there's a wonderful selection of beautiful pink silk shops around here.

But first, le culture! As we know, my pink tutus love to experience new things. We’ve already got the cobblestone streets under our toes. The Coliseum - absolutely massive, my dears! You can imagine it bustling with life all those years ago – gasps!- such history. We were quite early so we had a really nice photo-op with a perfect light – and not one queue in sight. I love the way the ancient architecture whispers tales of the past! I spent ages imagining all the Roman dancers from those times who once danced on these very steps... imagine, little ballerinas with pink tutus twirling their way across those stage sets! Now, that is my dream – imagine all those centuries of little pink tutu dancers!

Speaking of which, guess what I saw?! You must know – La Scala is coming to Rome in a few days!! Can you believe it! La Scala, here! The most fantastic opera company in the whole world is only a hop and skip away. I’m not sure whether to pack my ballet shoes or opera gloves for this one! It’s so exciting. I shall definitely post a blog all about the opera next week!

Oh, I just had to take you with me to a delightful café right around the corner from our apartment. I mean, this place just screamed out pink tutus and coffee and of course, it was packed with gorgeous ladies enjoying the delights of their tea and pastry! All my instincts told me it would be perfect! And it was. A cute little place with checkered tablecloths and chandeliers and beautiful fresh floral decorations – oh, my heart flutters at the mere thought - so feminine and delightful!

You simply cannot believe the outfits I’ve seen in this city! I mean, Rome is a whirlwind of fantastic fashion, so inspiring! Everyone is so elegant. There are stylish, sophisticated women everywhere with gorgeous handbags and chic outfits. The colours! The textures! I even spotted a group of beautiful women all dressed in matching pink jackets! It’s so inspiring! I really love the way Italians dress. Such great confidence – and a little pizzazz that only a Roman lady could manage, wouldn’t you agree?

Now, don’t worry, my dears. It’s not all about us, and my tutu twirls. Although it is such fun watching everyone waltz about in their finery - there's this feeling about Rome. It’s just a place where anything can happen, and you feel so alive and free.

For instance, after my morning coffee at this wonderful piazza overlooking a fountain – with all those happy people enjoying a little lunchtime picnic - we spent the rest of the afternoon taking a sweet stroll along the banks of the river. Oh my dear, such a beautiful river - with bridges everywhere - all adorned with intricate details – you simply must take the time to visit this stunning place - especially as we’re lucky enough to have so many fabulous bridges right here! It’s all so utterly romantic! We also took a short gondola ride, although I have to say the ones in Venice were definitely longer. This one, well it was a bit cramped – and you know Pink Tutu can’t twirl in a tiny space!

Talking of romance my sweet ballet lovelies, Rome is such a romantic city! And tonight, my love is going to surprise me! Well, he said surprise. Maybe a private ballet performance? Or maybe a dinner on the rooftop of some fabulous hotel in the middle of the city - with all the gorgeous lights twinkling... I can only imagine - oh, he makes my heart flutter. You see, sometimes a pink tutu is best worn in a very special and secret way - just for you and someone you love.

So there you have it. It has been such a glorious, vibrant and enchanting week! A week that my pink tutus have embraced with open arms - full of amazing stories and beautiful things that my heart and my camera lens have been working overtime to capture!

That’s all for this week. See you next Wednesday, same place, same time – for more Pink Tutu travels!

Until next time – Ciao, bella!

Emma x
