Pink Tutu Rome: Ciao Bella! #196

Wednesday 1999-03-10

Buongiorno, darlings! Itā€™s Wednesday, which means itā€™s time for another installment of my Rome adventures on www.pink-tutu.com. Iā€™ve just hopped off the train from Florence, my tulle skirts billowing around me like a beautiful pink cloud. I feel so ridiculously happy!

Rome. Just the word makes my heart skip a beat. It's a city that vibrates with history and beauty, a perfect mix of ancient and modern. Plus, itā€™s bursting with all the fashion inspiration I could ever need!

The Pink Train Journey:

Oh, the train ride! Just getting to Rome was an adventure! Imagine this: Me, squeezed into my latest pink tutu (itā€™s got sequins this time, darling!) sitting next to a woman who could be straight out of a Fellini film. Her hair was like a crimson cloud and her lipstick a bold, scarlet flame. We exchanged smiles ā€“ you see, pink and red, they just work, it's the most fabulous mix ā€“ and she even admired my tutu! ā€œDolce!ā€, she exclaimed. Thatā€™s "sweet" in Italian, for you non-Italians. And you know what? I thought she was totally dolce too. I couldn't help but feel a little bit like a movie star on my way to conquer Rome!

A Touch of History (and Pink! )

My first stop was the Colosseum. Yes, it was majestic! Just think, so much history wrapped up in one enormous, ancient structure. As I gazed up at the faded, worn stone, it was almost like I could hear the roar of the gladiators. I envisioned ancient Rome, bustling with people, their robes swirling around them in a kaleidoscope of colour... but with one crucial addition: Imagine a troupe of ballerinas performing in tutus - I'd definitely incorporate pink! I imagine the audience would go wild for my rendition of a modern ballet, infused with gladiatorial spirit, maybe some impressive leaps between the tiered seatsā€¦ the very thought of it sends shivers down my spine!

Fashion Finds

Of course, no trip to Rome would be complete without some fabulous shopping. After the Colosseum, I hopped onto the bus - the colours of Rome are divine, and itā€™s got such an amazing energy - and made my way to Via Condotti, the famous designer shopping street.

Oh my! Iā€™ve never seen so many fabulous shoes in one place! There was one pair, absolutely perfect for a ballet class, in a delicate pink satin, and even though they were practically begging me to take them home, I reminded myself I had to be disciplined. You see, I have my ballet performance in Siena next month to save for!

Instead, I bought the most darling pink hat. Imagine a cloche hat but made from layers of chiffon, and finished off with a feather plume the colour of a flamingo. Now THATā€™S the kind of chic touch that screams, "Ciao Bella, Rome! Look out, world, Pink Tutu's in town!"

Pizza Time

Now, if youā€™re reading this, you know that I love my pasta. However, in Rome, there was only one thing on my mind: Pizza! I had my very first slice of the famous Roman Pizza at a tiny cafe tucked away on a narrow backstreet, where it was so delicious it practically sang to me! Imagine thin, crusty dough piled high with delicious, creamy mozzarella. Heavenly! I felt like a little girl on a birthday, all excited about cake - except, this cake was much more fabulous.

A Performance!

This evening, Iā€™m attending a ballet performance in a gorgeous 18th Century Theatre, itā€™s truly breathtaking - the gilded detailing, the velvet seatsā€¦ and even more thrilling, a new ballet that is sure to make a splash! The music will be incredible, and the costumesā€¦. Oh darling, I can't even begin to imagine! Just as soon as the last curtain drops, Iā€™ll be off to buy myself a gelato (you know, a very necessary after-performance treat!), then writing you all another exciting Pink Tutu Rome blog post.

Until next Wednesday,

Emma xx
