Pink Tutu Rome: Post 368 - Wednesday 26th June, 2002: A Day Filled with Divine Dolce Vita

Ciao bella! It's Emma, back from another whirl around Rome, and my darling, I've been spoilt rotten. My travels are sponsored by my ballet performances, of course - the dedication to the pink tutu lifestyle means my love of travel can be supported. I've been a whirlwind of tulle and twirls, indulging my passions in the Eternal City. Let me tell you, Rome has my heart fluttering! Today was all about experiencing the divine dolce vita!

My morning started with a delightful cappuccio (who doesn't love coffee in Rome, I ask?) followed by a passeggiata around the ancient Colosseum. Imagine me, darling, twirling amongst the ruins in my delicate tulle and the vibrant pink of a cherry blossom dress! I just adore the contrast - pink ballet tutu against the ancient stone, the vibrancy against the history. This was the day for the bright pink! Honestly, you couldn't catch me in anything else! I spent an hour just lost in its immensity, feeling the power and presence of a bygone era.

Speaking of bygone eras, Rome simply abounds in them. The Museo Nazionale Romano was my next stop, home to breathtaking artifacts from Roman times. I just can't resist these reminders of all the amazing people who have lived here. I was like a little girl in a sweet shop, darting around every nook and cranny! The beauty of Roman mosaics, the delicate art of ancient coins - even the stories inscribed on stone - every piece spoke of another era, making my heart sing. I almost twirled, but you know me - not wanting to distract others from the magnificence on display. I was so entranced that I completely lost track of time! Oh darling, I did so want to stay for the whole day, but I had to move on to the next treasure!

My lunch break, darling, was truly the definition of la dolce vita . The gelato! Oh my, I indulged in a triple scoop of the most divine pistachio gelato you could ever dream of. So smooth, so creamy, such utter bliss! (Let's not talk about calories; let's just say, I work it off in ballet classes, shall we? wink wink I then popped into a vintage shop - there's something truly magical about finding a treasure in a pre-loved shop! I found an exquisite black-lace beret, with just a touch of sparkle that complimented my cherry blossom dress and bright pink tulle. I adore a vintage look; it’s timeless! I mean, what’s not to adore about an amazing piece that can make any look absolutely stand out? I felt every bit the vintage star, and it all went beautifully with my pink tutu of the day! Honestly, if I ever have to be somewhere in anything less than pink, I at least have a lovely lace black beret for a finishing touch. (You’d think I planned that in advance!) Giggle

This was truly the perfect prelude to a visit to the beautiful Roman Forum, an area so ancient it felt like a time capsule! I tried to picture the senators, the gladiators, the merchants, the bustling crowds of those centuries ago – they probably wouldn't have imagined seeing a pink tutu! (Just as well because a ballet passeggiata across these historic cobblestones would be just a tad dangerous!) I felt that I'd truly entered into the world of my history books. You know, I do often think, if the ballet dancers of today had lived in Roman times, I wonder if they’d have had such amazing sets and costumes, inspired by this period. The art in the Colosseum, and the architecture, just demands such creative, and spectacularly beautiful costumes! I can just imagine. Oh sigh. I loved it! Rome's architecture, the city’s story in stone… I’d be lost there in my daydreams all afternoon! The beauty of history, the mystery and the romance - it always leaves me utterly breathless. I really love that every stone here holds a story, like a magical secret whispered by time.

Now, I don’t know about you darling, but I often like to end my day by being surrounded by some magnificent ballet dancing! (And sometimes, of course, a show just has the most beautiful costumes!) Tonight I went to the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma for a glorious performance of 'La Bayadere.' Such magnificent sets! And I must say - it all inspired me! (Did I mention it was full of sparkly and lovely, intricate costuming, with beautiful pinks and even a touch of black lace for added interest? ) As always, ballet and Rome - it just has the ability to bring that joyful feeling to my heart! I almost found myself on stage joining in with the ballet dancers in my own little world of imagination! I would’ve loved it so much to take to the stage! But my ballet slippers just didn't seem to make the same noise as theirs on stage. (It would be so very exciting! Do let me know if anyone’s interested in booking my pink tutu in for a theatrical production sometime! We’re looking at costumes which can only mean we’re looking at some serious opportunities!)

What an absolutely divine day! Rome, you have won my heart completely! I've still got so much more to see, so many places to explore. Next week, we're going to be going further into the heart of the city and even spending a day in the Vatican. You know what they say: the most interesting travels are still yet to come! I hope you will come along on my adventures. Ciao!

Until next Wednesday, when we delve into a brand new adventure.

XOXO

Emma.
