Pink Tutu Rome: Wednesday, August 14th, 2002 – Post #375!
Buongiorno, darlings! It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another fabulous instalment of my Pink Tutu Rome adventures. This week I'm twirling through the Eternal City, feeling as light as a feather in my newest tulle masterpiece (a cherry-blossom pink, of course!). It's hot, it's beautiful, and it's so Rome!
Train travel – the ultimate way to travel, darling!
I'm such a big fan of travelling by train. You get to see so much of the countryside, and it's a far more relaxing way to journey than flying. I started my week in the rolling green hills of Derbyshire, England. Remember that stunning Victorian station, all wood-panelled elegance? It made the perfect backdrop for a few quick snaps in my bright pink, polka-dot tutu. Let's just say it certainly got some curious glances from the station staff – my tutu is, after all, an absolute statement piece!
After a gloriously sunny morning on the train, I arrived in Rome. It's just like something out of a movie, with ancient ruins, cobbled streets, and little cafes with brightly coloured awnings. As soon as I hopped off the train, I felt the energy of this incredible city humming around me. And I knew right then and there – I just had to don my special Italian tulle!
Tutu-ing through the Trastevere
This fabulous fuchsia tutu with its delicate silver sequins was specifically bought for Rome. It just seemed the right choice, so full of life and a touch of old-world glamour. The Trastevere, that magical, bohemian district of Rome, felt like it had been made for twirling! The warm Italian light lit up the pink in a way that could only be achieved in a place with such an abundance of sunlight and romance.
The cobbled streets were buzzing with people, each one holding a tale as unique and exciting as my own. It was like a scene from an old film, where even the smell of baking bread seemed imbued with magic! Of course, no Rome journey would be complete without some delicious pizza, devoured while listening to the sounds of Italian street musicians filling the air. I felt a million miles away from my life back home, and I couldn't have been happier.
A feast for the senses – Rome, you’ve stolen my heart!
I had the absolute best gelato I've ever tasted – a creamy strawberry sorbetto – as I sat at a table under the shade of a beautiful wisteria tree. Everything in this city sings! It is full of incredible architecture, captivating sights, and such passionate people. And, as always, my fashion radar is twitching with the need for a good dose of shopping. After all, there's nothing quite like adding to your wardrobe after an inspiring adventure.
Rome in Pink: A Day at the Colosseum!
My favourite part of the trip? That has to be today's visit to the Colosseum! What a magnificent monument. There's a history to this place that practically whispers off its stone walls. It made me think of the ancient gladiators, the emperors, the triumphs, and the tragedies that have all unfolded on those very grounds. Imagine being there on a fight night - that would have been some experience!
I chose a vintage pink dress with a floaty skirt, perfect for swishing between the crumbling ruins. (Don't tell anyone, but it was from a fantastic vintage shop in Trastevere!) I think the dress even charmed a Roman soldier (he was doing his rounds) who offered to pose for a picture with me in front of the arena. Who wouldn’t be taken with this vision of pink! He looked a little embarrassed when I pointed out that I couldn’t possibly get a good photo unless he had a tutu, too, but he was a good sport about it. I even convinced him to join me in a tiny bit of a jig before he had to go back to his duty. Now, who could resist such infectious energy?
Evening ballet magic and the enchantment of Rome!
I'm about to head out to the Opera House tonight for a magical ballet show. The perfect way to end the day, wouldn't you say? I’ve packed my sequined lavender tutu – a little less in-your-face than the pink ones, a touch more romantic, with delicate beading and that extra shimmer. And of course, my ballet flats. These ballet performances help fund my trips around the world, darling, so it’s always a delight. Who knows, maybe one day, you'll see me twirling right here in Rome. That's a dream I'd be thrilled to make a reality!
I've already found so much beauty and joy in Rome, but I know there's even more magic to discover. So until next week, keep your tutus on, darlings, and dream big!
Love always,
Emma xxx
P.S. Did you know that August 14th is World Mosquito Day? I wonder if those cheeky little critters in Rome have heard of it! Perhaps they could use a tiny tutu, wouldn’t that be fun!
