Pink Tutu Rome: Week 434 - Ciao Bella!

Wednesday 1st October 2003

Buongiorno from sunny Rome! This is it, my darlings, the city that never ceases to inspire. I’ve dreamt of coming here since I was a little girl, captivated by its ancient history, the tales of emperors and gladiators, the Colosseum standing strong and defiant after all these centuries.

As the train chugged along the Italian countryside towards Rome Termini, I found myself staring out the window, a giddy mix of anticipation and excitement bubbling inside. I could just about see the Duomo towering in the distance, a beacon for all aspiring ballerinas, all those who believe in the power of the tutu.

Rome has got to be the most fashion-forward city I’ve ever been to. Think sleek Italian chic, all crisp tailoring and luxurious fabrics, but also a touch of whimsical bohemianism, a sense of colour and bold pattern that brings to mind a swirling tapestry of creativity.

Naturally, I arrived in full-fledged ballerina mode. My bright pink tutu (with a delicate silver chain detailing around the waistband, obviously), paired with a breezy ivory silk top and ballet flats. My signature look, but perfectly adapted to the Roman landscape, feeling like a fairytale come to life!

After a brief journey by taxi from Termini Station to our lovely little boutique hotel (oh, the delightful smells of freshly baked bread from the bakery around the corner!), I unpacked my meticulously planned wardrobe and began plotting out our next few days in the eternal city.

Day 1: A Glimpse into Roman Majesty

The first stop on our agenda, after a rather divine breakfast of freshly baked pastries, espresso, and fresh fruit at the hotel courtyard, was the Colosseum! Oh my goodness, this historical wonder left me speechless. Its vast scale, the ancient stones whispering of gladiatorial combats, a visceral connection to history - it was truly unforgettable. We explored the upper tiers, taking in the panoramic views of Rome, a tapestry of red roofs and shimmering churches, the ancient and modern merging in a stunning embrace.

Afterwards, a wander through the nearby Forum Romanum felt like stepping onto a film set, the remnants of temples and ancient buildings scattered across the earth, a poignant reminder of Rome’s glorious past. I was absolutely mesmerised, taking hundreds of pictures for my Instagram account, even popping a little twirl near the Temple of Saturn – that's how you know I was in my happy place, you know.

Afternoon Delight: A Couture Experience

My darlings, the highlight of the day? Well, besides that amazing Gelato we found tucked down a cobblestoned backstreet, I just had to share with you all about my wonderful fashion find. Tucked away on the side of a charming cobbled street, we stumbled upon this most delightful little boutique filled with unique designs, each one like a tiny masterpiece. I have to say, even my purse felt a bit lighter (but in a good way, you know?) by the time we walked out, a delightful ensemble of pastel pinks and soft lace a perfect addition to my wardrobe.

Dinner under the Tuscan Sun

In the early evening, a romantic stroll along the banks of the River Tiber led us to a traditional Italian Trattoria with its beautiful vine-covered courtyard. The warm air hummed with conversation, the smell of pasta and herbs intoxicating the air. I dined on delicious spaghetti al pesto and watched the sunset turn the sky a vibrant orange-gold. It felt like a scene out of a romantic Italian film, all those passionate glances and whispers across the candlelit table, it was positively magical!

Back to the hotel: And of course, I just had to pop on my trusty pink tutu and practice my pirouettes and arabesques on the rooftop, bathed in the warm evening light of Rome. A little bit of magic, a little bit of elegance, that's my way, darling! A pink tutu is always a good idea!

I have to say, this first day has been absolute perfection. This trip, it's got all the elements of a perfect holiday: history, romance, incredible fashion and good food. What else could I ask for, really?

See you back here next week for a new instalment from the Eternal City. And don't forget: Every day is a ballet!

Lots of love, Emma xx
