Pink Tutu Rome: Week 450 - Ciao Bella!

Buongiorno, darlings! Emma here, back from the cobbled streets of Rome with my very own Roman holiday to share! 🩰🇮🇹

It's Wednesday, so you know what that means... time for another Pink Tutu blog! This week I'm trading the rolling Derbyshire hills for the sun-drenched streets of Rome, and I'm utterly enchanted. It's just like stepping straight into a Fellini film, except instead of black and white, everything's pink! Okay, maybe not everything, but the gelato sure is. 🍨

This is post number 450, and it's hard to believe how quickly time has flown. Since I first donned my pink tutu, a simple expression of my passion for dance, it's become a journey of self-discovery, filled with incredible performances, incredible cities, and incredible outfits! (Just look at my Insta feed if you don't believe me! #PinkTutuRome)

The trip was a whirlwind of adventure. The journey was itself a fairytale, complete with comfortable, plush Italian train carriages, windows looking out onto the picturesque rolling countryside. Such a dream! My first tip for any aspiring tutu-clad adventurer is this: travel by train! You can feel the energy of each station, like you are truly becoming a part of the place.

Arriving in Rome felt like entering another dimension. The city was alive with sights and sounds; laughter echoed through the narrow alleyways, the smell of freshly baked bread filled the air, and vibrant flowers spilled out from every corner. It was, simply put, magical!

And just to get us all excited, I had a surprise up my sleeve. Did you know it's the anniversary of the opening of Teatro dell'Opera di Roma?! Exactly 126 years ago today, 21 January 1898, this iconic theatre was unveiled to the world! It was destined to be a place where the magic of opera and ballet could soar, and to this day, it continues to draw in visitors from around the world.

Ballet, fashion and a sprinkle of history

Speaking of opera and ballet, that’s my main mission while here in the Eternal City. You see, being a professional ballerina means I get to explore the world through the prism of the stage! Every city has its unique charm and character, its secrets waiting to be discovered. In Rome, that charm was intertwined with the ancient past. Imagine, standing in a grand, classical theatre, built by the ancient Romans, performing on the very same stage where emperors and senators once witnessed spectacular gladiatorial games. Doesn't that sound simply divine?

Now, I just have to show you what I’ve found!

(Remember, I’m not just a dancer – I’m a blogger!)

*A taste of Rome (with a dash of pink) *

Of course, no journey would be complete without a bit of fashion, and Rome certainly did not disappoint! I simply couldn't resist the urge to shop – the colours, the textures, the vintage chic – I found myself mesmerized.

From the grand boutiques in the Via Condotti to the independent designers' stores tucked away in Trastevere, Rome’s fashion scene is a tapestry of style and elegance, a little bit vintage and a little bit edgy, just like me. And wouldn’t you know it? I found a gorgeous pair of fuchsia leather pumps – the perfect addition to my Pink Tutu wardrobe! 👠 My ballerina bun and bright pink tulle would never have looked so fabulous without them. 😉

Of course, no trip to Italy is complete without enjoying the food – the divine smell of freshly baked bread, the rich, creamy flavour of gelato, and the bold, earthy taste of traditional Roman pasta dishes - oh, how I could spend hours simply devouring everything this delicious city had to offer. I was also lucky to visit one of Rome’s famous trattorias – they had a special ballet themed pasta on the menu called “Prima Ballerina”. So tasty!

My Roman Ballet Dream:

You might think this post is long enough, but I just had to mention one more thing. On my final night in Rome, I was treated to the most beautiful performance by the Opera House's very own ballet company. The dancing, the costumes, the sheer magic of it all – it left me breathless. They're performing Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake right now – have a look at the date! I knew then that Rome was a city that had a magic all of its own. The dancing here felt incredibly fluid and beautiful – it’s certainly going on my ballet bucket list, if you know what I mean.

*(The ending) *

Well, there you have it - my adventures in Rome, through a ballerina's lens! Now, what to write about next? The world’s my tutu now, I’m already planning my next destination… Maybe a trip to the Bolshoi, in Moscow. But before that, it’s time for a well-deserved, pink-filled dance lesson and then an afternoon of baking! I’ve got a special pink tutu cake for all of you… that is, if you are following my advice… and we are all wearing tutus in all sorts of shades! Until next Wednesday darlings, happy dancing, stay stylish and have a fantastic week! ✨💖
