Pink Tutu Rome #488: Bonjour from the Eternal City!

Wednesday 13th October 2004

Buongiorno bella! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, beaming at you from the heart of Rome! I know, I know, you're probably wondering what a Derbyshire lass is doing in the Eternal City, but let me tell you, it's been a whirlwind adventure so far, and you wouldn't believe what I've discovered.

As you all know, I live for ballet, fashion, and travel - preferably all in one! I love the excitement of hopping on a train and discovering a new corner of the world. And honestly, who can resist a city overflowing with history, beauty, and delicious pasta? This trip is definitely ticking all the right boxes!

Rome is like a ballet itself, darling, with each corner unfolding a different scene. This week, I’ve been spinning through the Colosseum, the heart of the Roman Empire! It’s mind-blowing, utterly vast and even a tad intimidating – imagine all those gladiators battling it out! (Although, I must confess I was feeling much more at home when I found a little shop selling handmade pink tutus…it seemed made for a princess, so of course I bought one!)

Speaking of princesses, imagine my delight at discovering the amazing Galleria Borghese! It's overflowing with dazzling Renaissance masterpieces. Imagine a ballet where every scene was painted by an Italian master - pure art, darling! I felt utterly inspired, so of course, I bought myself a copy of Michelangelo’s "The Creation of Adam," (in pink, obviously!) to inspire my next costume creation.

Of course, no trip to Rome is complete without exploring the city’s bustling heart, the Piazza Navona. I found myself drawn into the enchanting world of street performers, artists and performers filling the squares, much like a Parisian open-air cabaret. I found myself feeling a tad shy, wanting to join them with a ballet routine of my own, maybe something elegant and graceful. Then again, perhaps it would have been a bit too much!

Food, my lovelies! Oh, the food! You wouldn’t believe the divine flavours of Rome, all served with the utmost passion. From hearty pasta dishes like Cacio e Pepe to delicate gelato that simply melts in your mouth, it's all delicious and oh-so-Italian! I'm already making notes in my pink travel diary for my next foodie adventure, hopefully, somewhere in Trastevere!

But no visit to Italy is complete without a visit to the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma! The excitement was palpable, everyone dressed up in their finery, an elegant spectacle indeed! It’s one thing to be a ballerina at heart, but seeing a truly professional performance is quite another, the pure emotion, the passion in their every move - inspiring! Even better, the ballet was utterly breathtaking! I won’t tell you the name of it (spoilers!) but I swear it was something out of a fairytale!

And darling, I discovered a little gem, a tiny shop selling the most exquisite Italian tutus! They were made from shimmering silk, each one perfectly crafted with the most delicate ruffles and the brightest shades of pink, and not to mention the sequins! Naturally, I bought a handful. Every ballerina deserves a little sparkle, you see!

My Roman adventure is far from over. There’s still so much to explore: The Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain! My pink tutu is already packed with dreams of exciting Roman sights. Oh, I can’t wait!

So darling, until next week, stay sparkly and wear your tutus with pride! Remember, my Rome blog goes up on Wednesday’s over at www.pink-tutu.com, so join me on this incredible journey and remember: life's too short to wear anything but a pink tutu!
