Pink Tutu Rome: #494 - Wednesday 24th November 2004 - The Eternal City's Charm

Hello my dearest pink-tutu-loving darlings! This week, I’m sending you sunshine (and a hint of autumn leaves) straight from the heart of Rome! Yes, your favourite pink tutu-clad traveller has landed in the Eternal City, and oh my goodness, it's even more breathtaking than I imagined!

As I stepped off the train (always the most romantic way to travel!), a symphony of sights and sounds washed over me. Cobblestone streets, grand churches with majestic domes reaching towards the heavens, and the air thick with the intoxicating aroma of fresh coffee and baking bread. Rome has a kind of magic you can feel in your bones.

My trip to Rome is thanks to a wonderful ballet performance at the Teatro Argentina last night. The ballet company was exquisite, and the energy in the theatre was electrifying. Afterwards, a local vendor on the way back to my hotel offered me the most divine handmade leather handbag, the perfect shade of burnt sienna to complement my pink tutu! You’ll see a snap of it on my Instagram tomorrow, darling!

Today, I woke up to the sound of bustling street life outside my window, a lively blend of motor scooters and friendly Italian chatter. After a breakfast of cappuccino and croissants at a charming café on a corner tucked away from the main road, I embarked on my grand exploration. I’ve been roaming through narrow, cobbled lanes, marvelling at the grandeur of ancient ruins.

Every turn reveals a new architectural masterpiece – from the Roman Forum to the Pantheon. Each structure whispers stories of emperors, gladiators, and forgotten gods, reminding you of Rome’s rich and layered history. Of course, no trip to Rome is complete without a pilgrimage to the Colosseum, that magnificent arena of battles past, which still resonates with the energy of thousands of roaring spectators. I imagined the gladiators fighting and the chariot races speeding around the sand, a vivid scene brought to life in my imagination.

A quick trip through the bustling Campo de’ Fiori market, brimming with vibrant stalls and local delicacies, fuelled my wanderlust. The sights, smells, and sounds of this market are a sensory feast! My love for fashion was also very much ignited here! The streets of Rome are a parade of stunning street style, so I had to treat myself to a fabulous, sparkly pink beret to add a bit of pizzazz to my outfit! It looks perfect with my favourite pink tutu! You will have to wait until next week’s blog to see the latest addition to my wardrobe.

A highlight of the day, though, was stumbling upon the magnificent Trevi Fountain. I gazed in awe at the breathtaking Baroque architecture and cascading water, my eyes mesmerized by the beauty of its sculptures. The legends associated with it add another layer of intrigue - throwing a coin over your shoulder ensures you’ll return to this magical city one day. Of course, I couldn't resist a little tossing of my own. A little something to inspire future travels and ballet performances in far-flung destinations.

This evening, I'll be indulging in the decadent Italian culinary scene. I hear there is a trattoria in Trastevere serving the most incredible pasta and pizza - my mouth is watering already! I plan to take in the beautiful sunset over the rooftops while I eat and dream. I can already feel the creative inspiration bubbling in me, which I’ll turn into a new ballet sequence to wow you all with in my next class.

And you know me, darlings - wherever I go, my pink tutu will be there too! I mean, what better way to dance through life and its wonders than twirling in the vibrant hue of happiness? As I twirled past the ancient ruins, the playful colour seemed to infuse even the old stone with a touch of modern life.

I love being in a place where I can dance through ancient history.

Oh, did I mention, I stumbled upon a gorgeous shop filled with pink tutus today? The lady behind the counter even encouraged me to have a dance in my pink tutu while the shopkeeper and other shoppers applauded! She assured me that she understood and that in her store everyone is free to dance, which was such a refreshing perspective.

This vibrant, historic, and delicious city has definitely captured my heart. I’m still just at the beginning of my journey here, with so many more treasures waiting to be discovered. Stay tuned, darling, as I unravel the magic of Rome in the coming weeks. Until then, twirl on and spread a little bit of pink joy!

With twirling love,

Emma
